My Operation

Hi everyone,

Thanks for making this week's topic such a lively discussion. I have written so many comments that I think you all understand by now what I was trying to say, so I won't say anything more about it here.

As I mentioned before, I had an idea of giving feedback via video, but I don't think it is going to work for feedback on language. Watch my attempt, and you will see what I mean.

Actually, this will be my last entry for a while because I am going into hospital tomorrow to have an operation on my nose. It's an operation that I should have had years ago, but I just never got around to it. The bone that separates my nostrils is really crooked, so it has always been very difficult for me to breathe through my nose. This was not because of an accident - I was just born that way. If the operation goes okay, it should be much easier for me to breathe, and it will help me with sports as well. Who knows, I might even be able to sing!!

In Britain and the US, this operation is an outpatient procedure. That means you go into hospital in the morning and leave in the evening. Japanese medical practice is much more conservative, however, so I will have to stay in for at least a week. The operation is on Monday, and I will be having a general anaesthetic.

While I am in the hospital, I will be able to use my computer, but I don't know whether I will be well enough to do a new entry or not. I will try at least to write some comments. I hope you will keep things lively while I am away.

Thanks Amica. Actually, I was wondering whether to tell everyone how to say this in English, but I thought it might be a bit presumptuous! We would normally say something like:

Hope everything goes okay with the operation.

"Hope" is better than "wish" because "wish" is normally only used for "unreal" situations. I'm hoping that the idea of my operation going well is a very real situation!

Hi again David,

Thanks for your feedback on my comment. When I wrote the sentence " I've believed that ...", I wanted to say “ずっと信じてた・ずっとそう思っていた”.　この「ずっと」感を出したくて I've にしたのですが、やっぱり I believe... ですか？

I was excited while waiting for David said my name, taco in the video feedback. I wish there were another 10 minutes.

Did any of you see "Tetsuko no heya　徹子の部屋" today? A professor Robert Campbell appeared in the show. He’s been in Japan for 25 years. Tetsuko-san asked "いまだに納豆食べられますか、って聞かれちゃうんですって？" He answered "そうなんですよ・・・。"

Actually, I was a bit surprised to see the title of new entry, but after I read through it, I realized the operation is for the best. So, hope everything goes smoothly and looking forward to hearing from you in better condition.(正しいかどうか自信のない英文ですが。。。） And thank you for the feedback, I should be careful about the usage of boring and bored.

Thank you very much for the video feedback, although you didn't pick up many mistakes, it was still interesting because those side stories you had experienced. I haven't been to Singapore, it's funny to hear that Singapore Chinese like to ask rent to foreigners. The principal's story made me burst into a gale of laughter, not only because his unusual questions, but also because your facial expression while answering " No no, I don't like things living in the sea" (lol)
Exactly, it sounded like a 漫才.

I'm in hospital, and it's actually quite nice. As some of you know, my favourite things in life are mountains, motorbikes, and nurses. There are no mountains or motorbikes in here, but there are plenty of the third one! Actually, my nurse just came to ask me questions about my lifestyle, and one of them was 自分のいいところ１つと、悪 いところ１つを言ってください. I got up to about 25 with 良いところ, but I couldn't think of any examples of the other! I asked her why they need to ask me that question, and she said it's to help the nurses judge how to deal with individual patients.

I'm in a ward with 5 other people, but I have loads of space, and it's really quiet. I have my computer with me, so I should be able to get at least some work done. The operation is on Monday morning, so until then, I'll just be watching TV, reading, and working. It's not a bad life.

The doctor just came to explain the results of my blood test, and it seems that I have quite strong allergies to cats, house dust, "dani," about five different kinds of flower, and moths! I didn't know it was possible to be allergic to moths! Apparently, the problem is the dust on their wings. Apart from that, though, I am very healthy, which is nice to know.

David, I'm glad to know you are very healthy and being treated well at the hospital especially by your lovely nurse.(Have fun! lol) By the way, I asked you a question about my comment, but I know it's not a good time to ask you questions, so please forget about it and just take care of yourself while you are in hospital. I'll ask it to you again when you are all better:) (Everyone, if you have any ideas or suggestions, please let me know.)

As I mentioned before, today is my daughter's 7th birthday, so we are having a party tonight. We are going out tomorrow, and my mother and my sisters are coming to my house on Monday. On Tuesday, my friend and her family are vising me, so I'm going to be a bit busy for a while. I might not be able to join you for a few days, but I'm doing well, so don't worry about me;-)

Hi David,
It's good to know that you are really healthy except having some allergies, I've never heard of moth allergy. When I read that one of your favorite things is nurse, I thought nurse has another meaning except as caregiver, but you like nurses. Now I understand what you mean. Staying in a hospital and being taking care by kind nurses is nice unless your physical condition is bad; you don't have to cook, cleaning... It's funny that your nurse just asked you 自分のいいところを一つ言ってください　and you said 25 of them. It's so like you!( in a good way, of course; funny, positive)

Maki, I missed the UK logo last night, but I checked it this morning. I clicked the logo several times and saw all of them. They are all nice!

Yes, I'm very excited! But my friend is Japanese. We went to the same high school and were in the same class, and then she went to university in the US. After she graduated, she found a job and has been working there, so she has lived in the US for about 20 years. It's 2 years longer than the time she spent in Japan! She came back Japan and visited me several times. I have met her old boyfriends(One of them's name was Steve, but he was not "Big Steve". lol) , but I've never met her husband or her children, so I'm really looking forward to meeting them. Their common language is English, but her husband's first language is Spanish. I'm not sure if her children speak Japanese or not, but I'll try to speak in English as much as I can:)

Yes, I did! Lovely! Actually, when I checked the Google UK first in the morning expecting Halloween version but it was the usual page. There is a time difference ,right?

By the way, when I got home from shopping yesterday, I saw some of the neighborhood children were parading with lanterns;some of them were wearing witch-like capes or hats. It looked kind of parade for an autumn festival.
They didn't knock the neighboring houses's doors and seemed they just visited their friend's houses.
If I were sure they would ring my door bell, I'd be happy to prepare Halloween candies.

Hi Fumie,

I had a very relaxing day yesterday as Ling suggested. I went to massage and hair salon, and also read your novel "Pull Top Ring" soaking in a looong bathtub. Misa and Jerremy is a sweet couple. I really enjoyed the story. It seemed to me as if I was watching a movie about the life of an attractive Japanese girl who was always open to the world and had no prejudice or descrimination to other people. Also the ending, I wish I would be able to finish my life like her. I think you would really want to translate it into English. In the chapter "Friendship", there is a sentence '美砂をわが子のように慕うレイチェル'. When I read this part, it sounded new to me because I do not usually use '慕う' to younger people like my child(this feeling may just be me). Another thing is a just spelling (I think you already noticed) in the chapter "Growing up"; Atom got a 天職 but a 転職. Look forward to your English version too.:)

To tell the truth, I guess I have the same condition as you. Most of those who went through the surgery say it was a life-changing experience. You can BREATHE through your nose!! I guess I need to have a surgery at some point in my life, but I have a kind of nosocomephobia, so, for now, I hope your operation went ok!

Hi Team,

I had the operation this morning, and they have just let me get up and drink some water. I never knew water could taste so good! It's not painful, but my nose feels very blocked. I think that might have something to do with the four tampons (that's what the doctor called them) stuffed inside it!

The doctor just came to see me and told me about the operation. He said that the bone in most people's noses curves slightly, but that in mine, it was almost at right angles! He asked me if I had ever been punched really hard in nose when I was doing karate, but actually, my nose has always been like this.

Anyway, I was really glad to hear that because it means there will be a big difference from before. Jazmin, I'll let you know how I get on. If you decide to have it done, I will come and visit you in the hospital and help you through it.

I wrote this comment yesterday, but I was not able to post it. Anyway, here it is...

How was your weekend?
I was busy at work whole this week. By the way, I hate to go to work after vacation because I feel like I am a stranger. Anyway, I enjoyed myself on the vacation so I can’t complain.

Here are some more stories of my trip.
We (my sister, her daughter and I) joined a tour called Duck Ride. We went through downtown Seattle and went across the Lake Union. The weather was good so it was a perfect day for sight seeing.
The other day, my sister and I went to her husband’s office to have lunch together. After having lunch, we walked around the campus. As I mentioned before, there are a lot of buildings there. I thought I could easily get lost there. To my surprise, city buses go through the campus, and I hear that their parking lot is one of the biggest parking lots in the US!!
tsuneko and Ling, my sister has three children, one boy(almost 13 years old) and two girls (8 years old and 8 month old.) As you know, my 8-year-old niece loves animals. She let me use her room during my stay, so I slept in her bed. You know what!? She sleeps with a snake(ハブ). Of course, it’s not real but stuffed. I think it is her favourite at the moment because she brought it when we went to Walla Walla.
Green, Yes, Indian tea means Chai. You like Chai? So do I. it was good so I had another cup of Chai. She also served us tandoori chicken. It was good, too.
It seems that my sister lives a nice place and her neighbours are nice people. Some of them are from India, China, and Italy. It’s nice to meet people from other countries.
Tomo, I bought a lot of things. Some clothes, a pair of shoes, and foods (including chocolate)…
Oh, look at the time, I should be in bed.

Thanks for your another story in the US. Your 8-year-old niece really loves animals. I first thought she was sleeping with a real snake(lol). Really? Do you think so? I should translate it into English? Is it worth doing ?
I've been frustrated for a couple of days because of parenting, my son has developmental problem. Thanks to your warm comments I'm so happy now.^^

Thank you for your advice. I'll translate my novel into English after I revise it (rewrite some parts which some people pointed out). About my son, my biggest concern is can he independent when he grow up. Parenting is difficult. For older children, maybe そっと見守る、目をかける　are important but we shouldn't 口出しする、世話を焼きすぎる, am I right? What do you think about raising older children? 先輩parents, please give me your ideas.

Hi Team,

I had the four tampons taken (or rather pulled!) out of my nose at 7.30 this morning. They were accompanied by an awful lot of blood that had been collecting for two days.

I couldn't sleep last night, and I got much more nervous about having them taken out than I was about the operation, but it turned out to be nowhere near as bad as I had feared. It wasn't particularly pleasant, of course, but not too bad at all.

And now I can breathe through my nose! It feels like there are two huge tunnels through my nose now. I have cotton balls stuck in them at the moment, but I breathed freely through my nose for the first time this morning. It was an amazing feeling! Because the doctor has cut away all the bone that was in the way, he says I will go from being much worse than normal people to much better than most people. I'm really excited!

My body has had a bit of a battering over the last three days, though, so I'm going to spend today taking it easy.

I'm afraid I've never had my own kids(sorry, I comfused you from my sentence), so I have nothing to advise you. Only thing that I can share with you is ...

My sister left me her loving daughter who was fourteen at that time and she had various problems like OCD, eating disorder(I think she's still suffering) and some other serious ones and came to me from Sydney. She changed my quiet daily life completely. We had a hard time each other. Like you said, I did 世話を焼いたり口出ししたり, otherwise, our home would have become ゴミ屋敷 or her (boy)friends' salon, also the fridge would have been always empty when I needed to cook. We quarreled almost everyday and sometimes fighted against, yet I think we needed each other. I could see my sister partly in her, she could see her mother partly in me, then we hugged and cried a lot after hard quarrels. Now, she's in Sydney. I'm just doing そっと見守る although I'm worried a lot, actually.

Now, I meet small kids and their parents regularly. I notied there were roughly two types of them. One day, a mother complained me about another mother who didn't care at all when her kid was naughty. She even said it was like '放置プレイ' which was a new word to me. I replied to her that it was my responsibility and asked her to give me a chance for a while. It seemed to me both types of the parents have good points. After one and a half months, I often see that when someone notices some kid is doing dangerous or naughty, she/he immdediately cares of him/her directly that made me happy.

I had a great time with my friend and her family yesterday. We talked a lot! All in English!(because her husband, Ricardo, and her children don't speak Japanese.) Only when my friend complained about her husband(while he was away from the table in the living room), she talked to me in Japanese(lol) As I mentioned before, my friend have two children; 5-year-old boy, Andrew and 3-year-old girl, Audrey. My middle son(He is 10.) played with Andrew, and my daughter played with Audrey. My children understand some simple English, but they can't speak. They couldn't speak each other's language, but they had fun together. It seems like children don't need languages. Sometimes my daughter came to me and asked me what Audrey was saying, but it was difficult for me too! As you know, it's very difficult to understand what small children are saying even in your own language, isn't it? Only their mother(or family members) can understand them. Anyway, my friend helped us when we didn't understand.

One of the purposes of their visit to Japan is to do “shichi-go-san” ceremony and take some pictures of their children at a photo studio. Unfortunately, they have to wait about two weeks until the pictures are ready, so I couldn't see them yesterday. My friend said she will send me some of them, so I'm looking forward to the pictures.(Their children are so lovely!) I showed them some of my children's pictures that were taken at their “shichi-go-san” ceremony. When Ricardo had a look at my oldest son's ones, he said to me, “Is this you?? You look younger than this. When was this picture taken?” It was taken about 10 years ago, so I told him about it, and he was very surprised.(I was very happy!!) He is such a nice guy, isn't he? Maybe he was just trying to say nice things so that we could be good friends, but it worked perfectly. I like him!(lol)

When my friend and Ricardo saw my daughter's school backpack, they asked me if it was OK for Andrew to put it on his back. Of course I said "Sure", and then they took some picture of him happily. We talked about their lives in NY, our lives in Japan, and many other things. One thing I was surprised is that Ricardo said that he doesn't like to get naked in a public bath, and it's strange in the US. I thought hot springs were popular in many courtiers, so I asked him why. He said that there are lots of gay people in those places and if you get naked there, they always try to have a long look at you-know-what, and that makes him uncomfortable. I told him there are not many gay people in a public bath in Japan, so he doesn't have to worry about that, but he said that he just can't forget about those experiences in the US.

After having a nice chat at my house, I drove them to their home. It was about a 40-minute drive. Ricardo was sitting in the front seat, so he talked to me a lot, but it was a bit difficult for me to speak in English(or catch his English) and drive at the same time! I'm not good at driving...
When we got there and got out of the car, Andrew who was sitting in the back seat next to my son didn't come out. My friend told him to get out of the car several times, but he said "No!" and didn't move. Then she said, “OK, then you can stay with my friend. You don't have to come back to the US with me. Bye!”, and then he jumped out of the car(lol) I said to him, “Can you come to my house and play with Taku(←My son's name.) again?”, then he smiled and gave me a hug. Isn't he cute!
Anyway, we had a lot of fun. I hope I can visit them someday in the future!

Thanks! Yes, we had a lovely time with them, and it was also a good opportunity for me to communicate with English speakers face to face. I made lots of mistakes, and I noticed them as I was speaking, but I just kept on trying. I used my "English brain" so hard that it doesn't seem to be working right now...

Thanks! It was a weekday, so my husband had to work. He also had to go for a drink that night, so he couldn't meet them, and neither could my first son. My son has club activities every day after school, so he usually gets back home around 9 p.m. Anyway, if my husband had been with us, my friend and I would have to translate each other's husband's words, so it would have been more difficult for me! They said we should visit them sometime in the future, so maybe my husband can learn English or her husband and her children can learn Japanese till then;-)

Yes, it was a good opportunity for us all. Actually, my children had a bit of culture shock. When we said "Good bye", we hugged each other, and Andrew also tried to give my children a hug. My son got a bit shy, so I told him it's a kind of greeting in Andrew's country. My daughter was a bit surprised and was still shy, so I told her people often do this even if they are not in love with each other like a boyfriend and a girlfriend.(which was something she thought of it. lol)

Hi team,

I just saw the doctor, and he said I can leave on Saturday. I will still have to come back about twice a week to have my nose cleaned, and I have to wear a mask for a few weeks to prevent the inside of it from drying up. I didn't know about that, so I was a bit surprised. Anyway, it will be nice to get home on Saturday.

Oh, it was a weekday. Anyway it might be a good excuse for your husband that he couldn't join you(違ったらゴメンなさい）。Why I say this is situation is quite similar as for my husband. When a foreign friend visited our house long ago, my husband escaped because he barely speak English! Ithink if we had a chance to travel foreign country, my husband would be totally useless(笑）
Your children had firsthand experience of cultural differencies, which is a very good thing. I talked to my children that in Western countries, people hugging and kissing as a greeting. And they said 「え、うっそー！」 I think hugging is a very good custom, it gives us warm feeling and melt down the fear, uneasiness.

Hi team,

What you are writing as "ritually" is probably "literally." If you say "It went on for literally 40 minutes," it means "I am not exaggerating the time - it really was actually 40 minutes!" "Literally" is used when you are saying something so surprising that the other person might think you are exaggerating if you don't say so.

For example, "That guy has only one or two friends," it might be taken to mean "He only has some friends." If you say "literally only one or two friends," however, it means the actual numbers one and two.

I'm not sure if my voice has changed or not, because I still have cotton balls in my nose, and my nose is still quite painful, so I'm not breathing normally through it yet. As you know, I absolutely late masks, so I'm going to ask the doctor if I can just carry on using the cotton balls instead.

My husband told me that it was a kind of “settai”, so it was something he had to do, but maybe it was a good excuse for him(lol) He has met my friend and her boyfriends several times before, and he took us for a drive including sightseeing. At that time, I couldn't speak English at all, so my friend worked as an interpreter for us. Actually, my husband went to English language school for a while when he was in his 20's, but he can't speak English at all. I asked him before, "Where did you leave your English you had learned?", then he said, "I have no idea!"(lol) Have you heard of this saying "Use it or lose it"? I think it's so true!

When my friend visited my house, she gave me some nice presents, and one of them is a Trader Joe's eco-bag.(Do you remember us talking about this bag before?) Another one of them is a picture book of "Cinderella" written in English, so I read it for my daughter both in English and Japanese.
I really had a great time, so I felt like Christmas was over when I got home from my friend's parents' house...
