What is this?

I just went for a ride up to Yahagi Dam on my bike. In the car park, there was a huge wild animal just walking around and eating grass. I didn't go too close to it because it had long horns and looked very scary. These pictures were taken with a zoom lens, so they are not very clear. What is it? I think it is a wild boar, but I'm not sure. I have never seen one so clearly before. Click on the picture to see the other ones I took.

Hi David,
You put new post again, thank you. What is this strange creature?? I've never seen this before. It's looks like a combination of raccoon dog and deer.
I looked for it in a picture dictionary but there aren't anything like that. Maybe it's a new specie?

I'd like to help you with proof-reading, but I'm not sure if I could do it or not. Because I have never do that. Is that I would tell you if I found some mistake in your Japanese? Anyway I want to give it a try if you don't mind. So if you let me try it, I'll send a mail to the address.

As for the controversial topic, war and apology, I should give my opinion, but I'm afraid the level of English was too high for me and I couldn't follow some of the comments. All I can say is what had happened during wars in the past are really terrible things and we shouldn't forget about the sad truth not to repeat the same mistakes. ( Anne, I watched prof.Sandel's lectures but they are difficult for me even in Japanese sometimes(笑）.)

I just had a look at the picture, but I didn't know that animal, so I asked my husband. He says it's 日本カモシカ. I was surprised because it was very different from my image of カモシカ!

I've heard that 日本カモシカ　is an original species in Japan, but not a rare species.

BTW, I have a question about English sentences.

I ran yesterday morning as I do on Saturdays.
I saw a man running ahead of me. It seemed that he was not running fast. So, (I'm sorry to use Japanese here.) 「私は、（彼を）抜けそうだと思った。」

And then, I passed/could take him over soon actually.

Do you think which English sentence is the best to express my thought? and why?
I'll show you some options as follows:
1) I thought I would be able to pass him.
2) I thought I would pass him.
3) I thought I could pass him.
4) I thought I can pass him.

A grammar in English: the sequence of tenses often annoys me.

I suppose 1) is the best, but it looks a little redundant.

Of course, 2) looks best.

I've heard 3) is not correct in this case because I passed him afterward. However, theoretically thinking, I suppose 3) is acceptable.

I've also heard 4) is acceptable, especially in spoken English.

Whenever I come across the case which is easy like that, I think always I don't understand English grammar.
It makes me dissatisfied.

If you give me some advice, it would be much appreciated.

Hi Gussan,

The first three are okay. Number four is strange unless you make it, "I thought, 'I can pass him.'" Number 1 sounds the most natural to me. Number 2 is just predicting what would happen rather than talking about ability.

Hi Gussan,

I was just thinking that your question is an interesting example of the difference between "grammar" and "usage." If you are asking which of those sentences is grammatically correct, then the answer is "all of them." If you are asking which one best expresses your thoughts, then the question is about usage, not grammar. In other words, when you say "I don't understand English grammar," what you actually mean is that you don't understand English usage. I think this is one of the problems of English education in Japan - i.e. that you learn about grammar, but not about usage.

I was also thinking that it is difficult to answer your question without knowing the context. For example, I said that "I thought I would be able to pass him" sounds the most natural, but that suggests that something happened after that to make you realize that you couldn't.

"I thought I would be able to pass him, but then he started running faster."

If you just want to translate …と思った, it's probably better not to use "thought" at all. I would probably say "I knew that I was going to be able to pass him."

By the way, the question should be "Which of these do you think expresses my thoughts best?"

That's an interesting question for me too. I used to practice rephrasing those sentences at school(a lot!). I had to think about sequence of tenses, but I didn't learn much about usage. I just rephrased sentences like those just by following the rules. I remember us talking about the expression "…と思った" before on the blog, and we learned this one "I thought to myself, '... ...'", but it would sound a bit strange if you used this expression all the time, right? I never thought of "I knew that I was going to able to...", and I couldn't say "Which of these do you think expresses my thoughts best?", either. I'll add these to my database. Thank you:)

"I knew that I was going to be able to ..." is a good sentence, I think.

You said that you think some Japanese like me don't understand the fact that English usage is one of the problems of English education in Japan.
You have touched on a sore point.

I have a further question. I wonder whether 4) is correct or not, because 4) looks like not following a grammar: the sequence of tenses.

If you can, could do explain why 4) is correct?

Hi Gussan,

As I said, it's only correct if you make it direct speech. Again though, I don't think the sequence of tenses is "grammar." As I understand it, "grammar" just describes what kind of word can go in which place in the sentence. Noam Chomsky made a famous sentence to demonstrate that English sentences can be grammatically perfect but still have no meaning. Have you ever heard of this sentence?

That sentence does not break any grammatical rules of English, but it is, of course, pure nonsense. I wouldn't say that "I thought I can" is grammatically incorrect because it's not. As I said, it is very important to understand the difference between grammar and usage.

I remembered where I have heard the word "Serow" before. It's the name of a bike made by Yamaha. It's an off-road bike, and it's very popular with women. I guess they used the name "Serow" to show that it is very agile. I always thought it was just a made-up word!

Don't worry, I'm not upset :-) I don't agree with Practical English Usage there, I'm afraid. It just depends how the writer is using the word "grammar." As a matter of interest, though, can you write exactly what it says?

By the way, the expression "agree to disagree" is new to me.

Last week's discussion was interesting ,though , I found(or realized?) that I didn't know much about WWII enough to talk about.

I can't imagine you saw "日本カモシカ" at Yahagi Dam. When I was it, it reminds me of the picture book"三匹のやぎのがらがらどん."

for me, but it would be good for English study and learning how to speak logically. When I was watching his lectures on TV and he asked students to give their opininos, I sometimes couldn't have any ideas even in Japanese. I think that's because in Japan we didn't learn discussion or debate in school. I think now it's changing.
I will watch tonight's TV program "たけしのIQ200". Mr.Sandel is in the program.
