Earthquake
I was teaching this afternoon, and I didn't even notice the earthquake. When I finished, I saw lots of emails and messages on my phone from my friends and family in the UK asking if I was okay. I've just watched the news coverage on YouTube, and I couldn't believe my eyes. It feels very strange because I read an article just last week explaining how the earthquake in Christchurch could be a warning of an even bigger one to come in Japan. Anyway, I'll leave this entry open for people to post comments and tell us that they are okay.

Hi everyone,
The shaking we felt here was quite big and it lasted for a few minutes, everyone at my company evacuated outside. It seemed that this was the biggest quake they’d ever experienced in their lives even for many Japanese, of course for me as well. There is no damage here so far, except that all trains have stopped and I am one of those who have to stay at the office for a night.
I hope you are all safe and please take care.

Hi everyone,
Are you OK? It was awful!! But I’m OK. I’m in high spirits. I had dinner at a restaurant with my colleagues, and I'm staying at my office tonight, because almost all the transportation is dead in Tokyo now. Groceries had disappeared from shelves in convenience stores.

I'm home! I drove 5 hours to pick up my son at his school because the trains were stopped. It usually takes about 40 minutes, but the road was so crowded. My husband has just got home now. I hope you are all okay.

Hi mates,
I got up early this morning as usual. I'm ok. My house's damage was several wine glasses broken.
I left our office at 5:30p.m. yesterday as usual. I was able to return to my house around 9:30p.m.
I walked more than ten kilometers and once I got on a bus.
I'm writing this in my living room, I feel a slight tremor. I'm scary. Oh, I live in west side of Yokohama.
Anyway, I'm going to run as I do on Saturdays.
I hope you don't have much damage.
See ya,

Thanks Anne. My family are all okay. I'm worried about Appoh. He's back to his hometown Sendai now to see his sons' graduation ceremonies. He seems to have left the US after he wrote his blog on March 8th. I really hope he and his family are all okay.

Yes, when I heard the news about the earthquake, Appoh's face came to mind first. I really hope he and his family are okay, too.

I'm relieved to know you are okay. The town where I live is in the northwest side of Japan, so it has no damage. But as you know, many towns suffered heavy damage from the earthquake and tsunami. I'm very sad.
Tomo and Anne,
Appoh is in Sendai now? I didn't know it. I'm worried about him, and I really hope he and his family are safe, too.

Hi mates,
Today's weather is fine. That's a small good thing for the Tohoku people.
Correction:
I'm scary. ⇒I'm scared.
I'm embarrassed by such a fundamental mistake.
I think I might have been unsettled.
See ya,

Glad to hear you are all okay. I'm watching the news now, but I still can't believe it's real. It looks like a movie.

Hi everyone

toko-mom

福島第一原発の「現状について」の情報
There was an explosion at Fukushima Daiichi plant Saturday afternoon. It caused by a built-up of pressure in the reactor after the cooling system failed. Four workers were injured, and three people in Fukushima prefecture were exposed to radiation.
The evacuation area around the plants:
Daiichi(No.1) - 20km radius
Daini(No. 2) - 10km radius
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said in a news conference Saturday evening, "We've confirmed that the reactor container was not damaged. The explosion didn't occur inside the reactor container. As such there was no large amount of radiation leakage outside. At this point, there has been no major change to the level of radiation leakage outside."
Tokyo Electric Power is filling the reactor with sea water to cool it down and reduce pressure.

Tomo,
Sorry it's taking forever to write to you! Things have been hectic the last few months. I'll write to you when things are better and I have more time.

Hi everyone
It's David's friend Sue here, from the UK. Some of you might remember that I posted on the blog a while back. I'm glad to hear that you are all ok after the terrible earthquake and tsunami. It is on the news channels constantly in the UK and our thoughts are with you all.
Take care everyone.

I'm writing this on my phone because the power is out now. It will be back at 10. Because of the power cut, the trains are stopped around here, high schools are closed, and school lunch at elementary and junior high schools is stopped. Children have to bring lunch from home, but rice and bread have disappeared from shelves in supermarkets! But, this is nothing compared to the people suffering in Tohoku. We have to do whatever we can do for them.
Yuki, thanks for the message. Let's talk a lot when things calm down:)
Hope you are all well.
