A Month after the Disaster (Feedback)

Thanks for all your comments. We seem to have focussed on the nuclear accident this week. That is not surprising, because it just seems to get worse and worse every day. As I said, it is impossible to know who is telling the truth, so it is difficult to know what to believe. I suppose all we can do is keep our fingers crossed that the situation will improve soon.

This week was a very busy one for me because I started teaching university classes again. On Monday, I taught two classes at Aichi Prefectural University, and on Thursday, I taught two classes at Nagoya University of Foreign Studies. All my students seem really nice, so I think this year is going to be fun. One good thing about all the classes is that there are more girls than boys. Girls tend to be more talkative, and they make the class more fun. Mixed classes are fine, but when there are too many boys, the atmosphere seems to change. A lot of the boys I used to teach didn't really like talking even in their own language, so teaching them to speak English was a bit of an uphill battle.

Another interesting thing I did this week was start a French class, but I'll tell you more about that next week. In the meantime, here is some feedback on your sentences.

But he explained there in a great length
(But he explained there at great length...)

the worst of the worst happened
(the worst-case scenario happened)

What was astounding was that the magnitude level was all of a sudden elevated one day to 9.0 from 8.4 or something. The reason is that there is a law in Japan if the level of the disaster is beyond a certain degree, the government assists a company like Tepco by providing them with the tax-payers' money to save their operations.
(I didn't know that, but I'm sad to say that I don't find it surprising at all!)

This is my first comment on this blog.
(This is a good sentence to learn for any new members who are thinking of joining us.)

Each one says a bit different from each other.

This is a good opportunity that I think about the radioactive contamination.
(This is a good opportunity for me to think about...)

Hi David and everybody,
This is the first time for me to coment on this. Nice to meet you.
The effect of the earthquake has been still so disastrous that a lot of festivals and events have been canceled all over Japan.
(This person wrote a very long comment but didn't put his or her name. Anyway, thanks for the comment, and nice to have you with us.)

While I didn't join here, it seems many new members come here.
(While I was away, it seems that many new people have joined the blog.) [Hi trmr - nice to have you back with us.]

Britain has the world's biggest reserve of plutonium waste and after the tsunami, no nation will take it, so Britain faces the crisis.
(I didn't know this, and I guess that very few people in Britain are aware of it. Maybe I'm safer in Japan!)

I'm off to the sports club now, and then I'm teaching at the eikaiwa school this evening. Have a great weekend.

Hi David,

Thanks for your feedback. It seems that you also had a busy week. Today was the busiest day of the week. I couldn't have lunch around 4:00. I am glad that it's last day of the weekdays.

Hi Ling and Anne,

Thank you for your words. I am having a tough situation again like last year:-( I don't know how long does it last. Anyway, I will be having a nice relaxing weekend.

Hi everyone,

Have a great weekend.

amo

Hi David,
Thanks for your feedback.
You started teaching again at Kendai and Nagoya gaigo? I think you really love teaching!

Have a great weekend,everyone!

Anne

Amo,you had lunch around 4:00? It's really tough,isn't it?!!
Have a relaxing weekend!

Hi! to all the newcomers. It's great to have you with us:)

Hi David and everyone,

Sorry, I couldn't join you this week. I didn't feel like writing in English, but I read all the comments and watched the videos Nicky mentioned. Like many of you, I don't know who to believe, either. All I know is that what they are telling us is not 100% right because they have an agenda, so I'm just trying not to panic and to live normally. I hope they get everything under control as soon as possible.

I'm going to my husband hometown tomorrow. It's a bit colder than where I live, so I think the cherry blossoms are still in bloom.

Have a great weekend,

Tomo

PS David, have fun teaching university students!

Hi David,

Thank you very much for the feedback, especially when you are busy.
You are teaching in university again? That's great! Nice to hear that there are more girls than boys in your classes. I just wonder, if you were a female teacher, would the boys become more talkative?

Hi everyone,

The other day I watched a movie called “The tourist”, which starred Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. Until the end of the movie, I didn’t feel anything. I thought something might be missing in my heart. The next day, I goggled it and found out the movie had a quite low rating and some reviews made me laugh. I picked two of those here.
“This woefully botched mystery-adventure-thriller-caper-romance-comedy, or whatever it was meant to be, is no fun at all.”
“It may be the only movie ever to feature a bad performance by Johnny Depp, one of the best actors working in films.”

Cherry blossoms are almost gone here, but the weather is nice and warm, it's just like spring. I hope you all have a relaxing weekend.

Hi David,

It's Rie. Hi everyone.
Nice to meet you.
This is the first time for me to comment in this blog.
I've been watching this blog about one week and finaly I decided to join. I want to lean English and want to talk about many topics here.
David seems always trying new things. I want to be like that.

It's so warm today.
Have a great weekend, everyone!!

Rie

Hi Rie,

Are you the Rie from Seto that I taught last week, or are you a different Rie?

The one who takes your class every Thuesday:)

Rie

Thank you for your feedback, David.
It's a beautiful sighnary cherry blossams at night and the moon especially today! I was looking for a few minutes.
I was far from busy this week, and hope to be busy a litttle next week. Because, I don't want to have just more holiday!

Everyone to be new here, I've just come here.
よろしくお願いします。

See you next week, everyone, and have a nice trip, Tomo.

Hi Rie,
Welcome to the blog! Look forward reading your comments.

Hi Chiki,
Thanks for your message. I had a lovely time yesterday. The petals of the cherry trees were falling like a shower in a warm spring breeze. They were so pretty!

Hi everyone,
It's a beautiful day today too. I hope you are all having a nice weekend.

Tomo

Hi, David,
thank you for your feedback. The news on TV about people, even really little kids who are struggling and suffering from the quake and tsunami makes me feel sad everyday, it's spring, really nice out there, though.

Hi, taco,
yep, Caerphilly is in the UK (actually Wales), lovely place, nicely quiet. You can listen to the radio called "Capital FM" or "Red Dragon" on the Internet as people do in Wales. ( I found it last week!)

Hi, amo,
yeah, you should go! People in Wales have got a really nice accent!
I found it quite hard to pronounce the place names. There are many grand old castles to see.

I’ve recently started a web site, the information you offer on this website has helped me greatly. Thank you for all of your time & work.

This it is a great piece of information. But first of all I must say all the visitors. Hello there. After this I must say that I will post http://eng.alc.co.jp/kaiwa/davidbarker/2011/04/a_month_after_t_1.html on my Hi5 profile. I will do this because at long last I found what I was looking for. What you say here is really respectable information. When I saw this tittle, デビッド・バーカーの英語と仲直りブログ:スペースアルク, in my google search I was very glad. I think I found something like this here http://www.xbileteavion.ro, I'm not sure but I thing it was the same. All the best

What a fun pattern! It’s great to hear from you and see what you’ve sent up to. All of the projects look great! You make it so simple to this. Thanks

Well, very good post with informative information. I really appreciate the fact that you approach these topics from a stand point of knowledge and information.
