TOIEC (Feedback)
Thanks for all your comments this week. I have passed your advice on to my student, and I'm hoping that he will join us here in the near future.
It was nice to see so many newcomers this week - welcome to all of you. I have included some of your sentences in my feedback, but please let me know if you would prefer me not to correct your English.
There is quite a lot of feedback today, so I'll keep the entry short. Have a great weekend, and see you on Monday.
For me, TOEIC is one of tools to keep my motivation of learning English.

Same as Tomo and amo, I've never taken the TOEIC test

I hear once you have a lapse of concentration, the result is hopeless.

At first I want to stress that it is definitely deferent ways to raise TOEIC score from to improve English communication ability.

Still my friend said me so, I'm slightly interested in taking TOEIC to see my English skill objectively because it's mush easier to take.

What makes me feel good in the book is that he said...

I think the people who have to take the test as their requitement in their schools or companies are very pity.

If you who have never taken the test take it, you may usderstand how difficult to get full mark of the test, I mean 990pts, is.

"There is no royal road to learning."
(Someone mentioned the phrase "royal road" to me the other day, but I'm afraid I have never heard it before. It is certainly not common in modern English. Be careful of what you find in dictionaries. I would say "there is no shortcut to learning.")

Thank you so much for the feedback! There are lots of points I should keep in mind when I write English. 'Royal road' isn't a common English. OK. I will be careful about what you had adviced me. "There is no shortcut to learning" is a good sentence. So I will use it instead when I want to say this.

Hi David,
Thank you for your feedback. Whenever I read your corrections to my sentences, I realize that I need more practice.
I understand you've never heard of the expression: royal road before. However, my image of royal road is a little different from the image of the phrase "There is no shortcut to ～.”
I think 'royal road' includes kind of standardized.
I'd like to put minor change to my sentence corrected by David because my former sentence had something missing.
Please read it.
If those of you who have never taken the test actually took it, you might understand how difficult it is to get the maximum score when you take the test.
BTW, I'm going to go to India from tomorrow.
I've heard the highest temperature in Delhi is around 38 degrees Centigrade.
I'm going to practice the hot summer in Kanto area this year.

Hi Gussan,
You do not need "when you take the test" at the end of the sentence because you already have "if those of you... actually took it" at the beginning. "When you take the test" is just repetition.

"Pass on to" is one of the expressions I have become familiar with since I came to the US.
I do not want to say that my company has to pass on the additional cost to our customers' bill.

I'm not good at writing long sentences because they are usually difficult to understand. From your corrections I can see that a long sentence can also be easy to understand as long as it's logical and follows the grammar rules.

I just read the guest list for the royal wedding in a British newspaper, and I was a bit disappointed not to find my name. Mind you, I'm quite busy next week, so maybe it's for the best.

I just noticed that we had learned not commonly used proverbs like 'royal road' or words or expressions at school. In the past bookish English or unpractical English were taught. So people in my generation may think what we had learned at school are practical English: we may think native speakers use them. That's terrible, isn't it? So we (I) have to make sure that English which I had learned or know are really used by native speakers.
学校で習った英語だからネイティブが普通に使っているだろうと思って使ってしまうんですよね。でも昔、学校で教えられていた英語は要注意ですね。私が中学校で初めて習ったのは、This/That is a pen.でした。なんで役に立たない（実用的でない）英語を教えるんだ？

Are you having a great Sunday night?
While I was reading Fumie's comment, I had the same feeling as her.
When I studied English at school, I learned (or memorized?) lots of proverbs and "There is no royal road to learning" is one of them.
When I read David's feedback, of course the sentence he showed us was easy to understand, but I'm a bit shocked. I'm wondering why we learned so many proverbs at school. As David advised us, words are alive(?) and have a life span.
Come to think of it, even in Japanese, using provers in our daily conversation could sound unnatural and old-fashioned.
This is not only the case in proverbs but in phrases.
PS. OK, I got it.

It's just my opinion, and I may well be wrong, but I think that one reason you learned a lot of proverbs in school is because older English teachers (especially university teachers) used to like to learn these to show everyone how good their English was. Actually, many of them could not really speak English at all, but learning obscure proverbs impressed other Japanese people. In other words, it was a way for them to feel as though they had a special knowledge of English without actually learning to speak the language. That is why you learned things like "It's raining cats and dogs" and "There's no royal road to learning."
By the way, I just Googled "royal road," and there are no results for a proverb as far as I can see.

I just googled "royal road" too. It was interesting,especially reading Wiki about it!
It's just my idea, but if you(we?) use proverbs or phrases in a right timing or right choice, I guess they will spice up your daily conversation or sentences.
I also think this is the most difficult part when you learn English.
By the way, I read the book called "日本人の知らない日本語" and the author shared us her experiences when she had taught Japanese. Among them, there was an episode similar to this, and it's interesting to know this could happen to every language learners.

Hi David,
That's might be the reason that Japanese English teachers used proverbs in the past.
I didn't know "It's raining cats and dogs" isn't also commonly used. We had to memorize many of those expressions for the test when we were students. I think, like Anne said, using proverbs sometimes spice up conversation. Of course we have to choose commonly used ones. I don' t know which ones are common and which ones are not. For example, "Kill two birds with one stone." is common? Japanese people use Japanese proverbs in our daily conversations. So English learners might wanted to learn English proverbs too. But If person like me (not good English speaker) used not common proverbs, native speakers might think I'm an obnoxious person.

When I read the sentence "There is no royal road to learning", I thought it was an interesting expression because "王道" is often used in Japanese. There are lots of sentences I want to learn this time, so I printed out your corrections. I'll practice so that I can produce them myself.
