Japanese Cars

I heard a story on BBC radio the other day about a survey of car owners that had been done in the UK. The survey was about how comfortable different kinds of cars are to drive. As usual, the Japanese makers came top. In fact, seven out of the top ten were Japanese! There is another survey that they do every year of the degree to which people are satisfied with their cars. I think that Honda is usually number one, but again, most of the top ten are Japanese manufacturers.

Personally, I love Audi cars, because I think they are beautifully designed. Unfortunately, when I checked their ranking in the survey, it was something like 15th or 16th. The survey found that they break down a lot and have a lot of problems, so I don't think I would buy one, especially not in Japan. Japanese cars are so reliable now that some companies are apparently offering lifetime guarantees in the UK!

Anyway, my questions this week are:

1) What are the most important things for you when you buy a new car?
2) What cars have you had in the past, and what was good or bad about them?

Even if you are not very interested in cars, I would like to know what you think about them. (Is the colour the most important thing? The design? The number of cup holders?)

They are smell, colour, and of course price (燃費is also important too), umm, however, how much I like is most important after all, I think.


2) What cars have you had in the past, and what was good or bad about them?

I bought cars myself only twice. One was a used white Mazda Familia and the other was a brand new white Mazda familia in my twenties.

My mother suggested that I start to drive a car 2 months before she passed away because I hadn't even touch my licence after I took it two years before. I immediately went to a driving school and took a course for paper drivers, and then dropped by a nearby car shop. There were only two cars in the store. I didn't think much about the detail but made my mind on one of two. That was a used white Mazda Familia. I was on time to be able to give my mom a ride. I liked the car without any specific reasons, so I bought an almost same designed brand new one on the second time.

During my 16-year stay in Singapore, I was always driving used cars that my husband bought because car prices were extraordinarily expensive for us while many Singaporean driving Mercedes Benz. Our cars had problems very often, so I didn't like them. I was scared to see some smoke and fire were raising from the engine when I was driving on the high way.

Unfortunately or luckily, my licence was expired because of my laziness, I don't drive any car now.

Hi David and everyone,

How was your weekend?
In my case, I mentioned last time, I went to see a dentist to checkup my teeth.
I went there with my husband and my son(for have my husband to take care of my son while I took a check),the result gave me a shock to me.
Of course my condition was not good, but surprises me was, my husband’ s ones are better than me!
He always blushes his teeth twice with toothpaste. I didn’t think that was a good idea, coz toothpaste 削る your teeth.
Therefore, I believed his way of blushing was wrong. So I’ve talked him over and over not to waste toothpaste .
As a result, he won ;d.
Anyway,I irritated this result and made up my mind to take care of mine more and more.

Here are my opinions;
1) What are the most important things for you when you buy a new car?
Driving safely is the most. So that I choose a car from the famous company.
Japanese ones’ have a value to trust I think.
2) What cars have you had in the past, and what was good or bad about them?
I possessed just one car before.
That was Toyota manual driving car. I fell in love with that just one sight. The figure was cool.
I didn’t think that that has a bad point.

The Japan Times article, I too read that( there was bunch of unknown words and phases, but quite interesting).
As momo and other members said, I think such a situation for foreigners must be really annoyed.
In that case you mentioned, as momo said he just wanted to have a conversation to you.
But this kind of ones’ sometimes cause lack of courtesy for others.
I have a lot of things to say,but my son is talking to me to play with him ;d

I'm not particular about everything but fuel-efficient.
I am particular about whether it is good fuel-efficient or not.
This topic makes me want to buy a new car.
Mine is old.
It is almost going to be 200,000Km

My name is Ken. I am tsuneko's husband. Please allow me to join in!

1) What are the most important things for you when you buy a new car?

First and foremost, it is how economic the car is(燃費).


2) What cars have you had in the past, and what was good or bad about them?

Toyota Corolla(moss green) used
Honda Civic(maroon) used
Honda Fit(red) used
Honda Freed(white) new

The first two cars were purchased in Singapore and were totally bad in condition and also badly maintained by me. They often became out of order and I was so at a loss where to bring the car in order to have it repaired. The weather in Singapore also must have been no good for the car, I think.

I am so satisfied in the last two cars which I bought in Japan. The quality and the fuel efficiency of the cars, especially Honda cars, have become drastically better recently. It is not the matter whether it is purchased in Singapore or Japan.

I decided to continue buying Honda, if I happen to change the car again in the future.

This week’s quwstions are difficult for me.
Because I am not interested in cars at all.
(At least, I have a driving license.)
So, I have never bought a car before.
However, I’m still 24 years old, therefore I may be going to become interested in cars in the future.
I’ll try to answer this week’s questions.

1) The most important thing is safety, I think.
To buy my cars is a big event in my life.
If I have my car stolen, I get a big shock, and I may not be able to recover from the condition.

2)As I said once, I have never bought a car before.
So, Everyone’s comments help me to study cars.
I’m looking forward to reading everyone’s answers.

Hi David,
I love to drive, so I couldn't imagine the my life without my car.

1) When I buy a new car, the most important thing for me is safety.

2) The car I have now is "impreza" by subaru. I bought cars four times, and three of them was "impreza". I love this car because it has comfortable ride and lots of storage. But it doesn't have good gas mileage much, so when I buy a next car, I might buy another one.

Hi David and everyone,

It is a typical May weather today and perfect for washing clothes. I trimmed a hedge around my house early this morning as we are having a clean-up day in our community Next Sunday .

I am glad to hear the good news about Japanese cars. I think they deserve to be given the top rating in the survey.
I often visit the Toyota assembly plant in Toyota city. Everytime I go there, I am impressed with its efficient working emvironment, its tidiness and cleaness inside the factory. Toyota is persuing the efficiency all the time.
In general, Japanese cars are very reliable in that they seldom break down and have good mileage. Toyota has about 50% share in the domestic market, however, you can't tell the difference among car makers in terms of the quality.

Here are my thoughts on your questions
1) What are the most important things for you when you buy a new car?

I like cars with good mileage. Personally I want to buy a Toyota's 'Prius'. But as my son works at Nissan, I have to give it up.

2) What cars have you had in the past, and what was good or bad about them?

I had a Honda 'civic' , a Toyota 'Corona' , a Nissan 'Liverty' and etc. I like the Honda car the best because of the good cost performance. Now I have a Nissan' Serena'.

How have you been? I was busy a bit so I couldn't join the last topic : (

By the way, this is my opinion about car.

1) There are a lot of things important to me.
First, the car needs to be safe.
For example, a lot of old cars usually don't have air bags. I think this situation is very dangerous, so I (actually my husband) bought a car which has air bags.
Also, the car has to have good brakes.

Second, the car should have good gas mileage, because it not only saves money, but also saves our planet.

Third, the car has to have enough space for me and my husband to go on short vacations, go shopping, and sometimes pick up people.

Fourth, we chose a gray car, because it's neither too dark nor too bright.

Finally, the price is important to us.
We chose our car not beyond our means, and I am still a college student, so I don't earn money yet.

2) In the USA, having a car is necessary, and I can't do without one.
We bought a Toyota Camry, it's comfortable and strong.
It had to be fixed Toyota recall last year, but so far we have had no problems. (Knock on wood :-))

Hi, David and everyone,

I passed a driving test the end of this January, so I'm just a beginner and I need to put 'beginner's stickers' (which is shining*) on the front and back both sides. I sometimes drive to see my grandparents with my mum and I found it a bit scary but quite fun! I hope to drive to 'hot springs' with my friends on holiday.

1) If I had enough money to afford my own car, I would purchase a car which got good mileage and could easily make sharp turns. I like cars well designed as well.

2) My dad has a Nissan 'Serena' which has a blue body for 9 years. It's old and has a lot of gents by now so he doesn't mind me driving his car at all. I can practice a lot till he changes his car ( actually I bumped his car into his garage:/). What about yours, Kyon? We might have exactly the same one! Now he's planing to buy a new one next year. He wants Mazda 'AXELA (sport)' which is going to load a new engine next year. I'm really excited about it!
When I was little, he had a Mazda 'Familia'.
I live in Hiroshima, so I look on Mazda with favour.

I'm glad that this week's topic isn't a tough one. Let me answer your questions. I would consider following points when we buy a new car.
(1) Good mileage, size, price, safety, functions, design and choose the color. We want to have eco-friendly car like Toyota's prius but we can't afford it. I prefer efficient cars to fancy cars. So does man. Good personality matters more than his looks.
(2) Our former car was Nisan's serena. We chose that because our sons were little and needed to take carseats. But it was hard for me to drive because of its size. I'm not a good driver. Especially I'm terrible at parallel parking. So I ended up had it with dents and scars. I'm relieved that my husband isn't the type of person who keeps his car always spick and span. Our current car is Honda's mobilio. I like it because it is compact yet spacious.
BTW, in Japan there are many so called "Paper driver" (people who have driving licenses but actually can't drive). Are there many paper drivers in foreign countries? I think cars are indispensable on their daily life in UK or USA. Maybe this phenomenon only happens in Japan.

I don’t think I’m familiar with the differences of cars, and yet I’m quite satisfied with the result of the survey.

I’m not good at driving and just drive around my neighbors mainly for shopping, so I worry about for driving and feel down a bit when it’s raining heavily.
Having said that, I know I can’t live without this convenient vehicle!

Well, I got my driver’s license after I got married, and I've never had my own cars.
I've shared them with my husband.

Here are my thought on your questions:
1) What are the most important things for you when you buy a new car?

What matters is ‘reliability.’
Other points are ‘ easy to drive’, ‘good mileage’ and ‘cost.’

2) What cars have you had in the past, and what was good or bad about them?

>a Toyota 'Corolla' sedan type white
>a Toyota 'Corolla' sedan type white
>a Toyota 'Corolla' station wagon type black

All Toyota! we(my husband and I) can't compare Toyota with other manufactures, but we are satisfied with our choices because these three cars have never broken down and didn't require added repair costs besides regular car maintenance.


By the way, I'm afraid I'm a bit sidetracked, but have any of you seen a DVD called "Who killed the electric car?"? This is a documentary film that deals with the history of the electric car, mainly focused on the GM EV1. It was interesting.

I just remembered that someone asked me whether I still meditate. (Sorry, I can't remember who it was.) The answer is that yes, I still meditate. I don't do it every day, and I don't do it for as long as we did at Vipassana, but I still find it very useful.

I've never bought a car myself, but I grew up with Honda cars because my father worked for Honda as an engineer, so of course all my family members' cars were Honda ones until my father retired.

1) What are the most important things for you when you buy a new car?

As I said, I've never bought a car, so I asked this question to my husband. He says that the most important thing is whether it fits your life style. The engine comes next, and then the design, the price, the upkeep cost(including gas mileage), and the color. There are 5 people in my family, so a two-seat sports car doesn't fit our life style. If the question was "What are the most important things for you when you buy a car you really want" and if you asked this question to people who love cars, I think the answer would be "the design".

My father likes cars and changed his car many times, and he once bought two cars at a time. One is a light car for commuting, and the other was an S-2000 for his enjoyment. I think he thought of the upkeep cost for the former and the design for the latter(or he just wanted one!) I remember his happy face when he showed me his lovely new car, and my husband was very, very excited when my father let him drive it.(Boys never grow up...) Anyway, my husband says that if he was rich enough, he would definitely buy a Ferrari. Everyone has the right to dream, don't they? 笑

2) What cars have you had in the past, and what was good or bad about them?

We bought an Odyssey soon after we got married. We drove the car for more than 10 years, but we didn't have any problems with it. We bought a Stepwgn a few years ago, and I like it very much, especially the power sliding doors(The driver can open and close the rear doors if s/he presses the button. I use this for my daughter.), つづく‥

the rear view camera(This helps me a lot when I park the car.), and the Smart Key System.(All you have to do is have the key with you in your pocket or bag and touch the door.) Come to think of it, what attracts me is not the car itself but its equipment. If the car is easy to drive and comfortable to be driven, I don't really care about the design or the color. I do care about the price, though!

I sometimes meditate on a bed but I often fall asleep quickly. To tell the truth I don't know how to do it.

Hi animal farm,

There are lots of different ways of meditating. The one I learnt shows you how to focus on changes taking place in your body. If you are really interested, I would recommend buying a book on the topic or going on a course.

Thank you for your reply about Vipassana! That was taco who asked you whether you still meditate. Actually I sometimes have trouble sleeping especially this time of year; getting hotter (today is chilly, though). I think meditation would tone your body and autonomic nerve.

Here is my answer to the first question of the topic.
1) What are the most important things for you when you buy a new car?

My answer is the same as tomo (her husband?). The most important thing is to suit your life style. If I buy a new car next time, I would like to have a kei-car(軽自動車). Kei-cars these days are cute and easy to drive. Since I got my driver’s license, I have had several cars. But I have put the gear into only Reverse, Park and Drive in my life!

I'm not sure if works or not, anyway, but I do abdominal breathing(belly breathing )twice a day on Futon; just after I wake up in the morning, and before I go to bed. When I do this, I concentrate on my right tiptoe,left tiptoe, right finger and left finger one by one. To me, it works to relax.

Actually, I'm interested in meditation,too.

Sorry, I missed your question. I think the most important thing for me now is fuel efficiency, because I think that the price of gasoline is just going to keep going up. I like the idea of the "plug-in hybrid Prius" that Toyota is going to bring out next year. It works purely on electric for distances up to about 30km, and the hybrid gasoline engine cuts in when the battery runs out. I'm interested to see how much it is going to cost.

Thank you very much for your warm welcome and nice to know you all! Amo, of course I remember you, and I really missed the gathering after the event held in Nagata-cho, as I 've got to go home immediately after that.....

David, I, in fact, had not been quite rich in Singapore, and so I needed to borrow money from my ex-company in order to buy cars there. Oh, the cars were really really expensive in Singapore, due to its politics.

I really enjoy driving my current car, Honda Freed. To tell the truth, I wanted to buy brand new Honda Insight, after Fit, because of its best fuel-efficiency, but I unintentionally become necessary buying Honda Freed, as we need this car to take care of my mother, who suffers from a neurological disease and always use a wheelchair to move. Of course, it is less fuel efficient than Insight, but it can be aorund 16km/litter, the most, if I drive it very carefully. The Fit is 24km/litter, and The Insight can be 30km/litter, the most!

In the car, I have a meter to see how 'fuel efficient' I am driving now, and if I drive very fuel-efficiently, the 'ECO' lamp turn on! I always drive carefully to make the ECO lamp to turn on, which is very fun to me! Am I very weird?

I'd like to answer David's questions as follows:

1) What are the most important things for you when you buy a new car?

The first is running cost for me.
If I buy a new car, I'd like to keep it at least for ten years, so reasonable running cost is very important.

I think running cost in this case includes auto insurance.

Hybrid cars and electric cars seem very popular.
However, I don't know the life span of the batteries. How much we have to pay when the battery is changed.

The second is drivability.
A car which I'd like to buy has to give enjoyment of driving.

2) What cars have you had in the past, and what was good or bad about them?

I prefer old cars.
I have Nissan Bluebird, which has manual transmission. I love driving it very much.

After I have become old gradually, I prefer a silent car.

It looks like sunny today in Yokohama.

Hi everyone,

I will leave my house soon to go to Korea. So I can't join you for a few days. Actually it had been almost 20 years since I had been to foreign country last. So it was quite exciting. I really want to take my mom to one of foreign countries before she gets old and can't go anymore. She never been to any foreign countries. We will go to an esthetic clinic( get facial, having cucumber facepack, have a sauna and あかすり.) If those magic worked, I will become beautiful! I really hope so. And we visit a temple and do shopping and eat healthy foods. I had some hints from Lily's blog. She visited Korea last year and she putted some information in it. Thank you Lily! We don't have enough time so I'm not sure how much we can experience which I'm planning to do.

Luckily, I was given a job offering this April and I accepted. I work twice a week now. I really love this job. I'm so lucky because I get paid while enjoying it. The problem is it's a temporary contact so I'm not sure if I can keep working or not. Anyway I can pay the travel cost for both of us( my mom and mine) from my salary. That's good feeling.
