Pornography (Feedback)

Thanks for all your comments. It's a difficult topic, isn't it? It does seem that things are beginning to change in Japan, though, and I think the situation will be very different 10 years from now.

By the way, I happened to see a story about child pornography in Japan in today's Telegraph newspaper in the UK. Did you read about either of these incidents in the Japanese media?

"Twenty people were arrested this week for posting child pornography on a mobile phone web site that was set up by a 17-year-old high school student, while Japan was shocked earlier this year at the arrest of a mother who took indecent images of her infant son and sold them via the internet."

Anyway, here is some feedback on your comments...

No, it’s better to keep them out of children, like in UK.
(It's better to keep them out of the reach of children.)

I mean, only pictures are not ok?
(Is it only pictures that need to be censored?)

It's a first comment on this blog.
And I haven't been writing, speaking in English for ages, so let me write this in Japanese in this time!
(This is my first comment on the blog, and I haven't written or spoken English for ages, so I hope you won't mind if I write in Japanese this time.) [Hi Noriko, "Let me" is okay, but I thought "I hope you won't mind if..." might be useful for some other readers.]

Also their parents should keep an eye on them.
(Nice sentence.)

Buying this kind of magazines not equal to the crime like the rape.
(Buying this kind of magazine is not the same thing as committing a crime like rape.) [Hi Saori, nice to have you with us.)

As for the topic, here are my thoughts on the questions.
(Nice sentence.)

If those manga had something to do with the increase in those crime or events, it might need to be banned
(If it could be proven that those manga were responsible for an increase in those types of crimes or incidents, they might need to be banned.)

I don't have any bad image for manga
(I don't have any negative feelings about manga)

I think pornography affect children and youngster badly and leads them with a distorted impression of sex.
(I think pornography affects children and youngsters badly, and it can leave them with a distorted impression of sex.)

男女二児の父です。
(Hi Satoshi, thanks for your comment. Your Japanese was too difficult for me, but I asked a friend to help me read it. It was a good opportunity for me to study.)

But unfortunately, one of them was for adult, they say "boys love" one, so, at that very moment I had a glimpse of a naughty page
(But unfortunately, one of them was for adults. It was about a homosexual relationship between boys, and I caught a glimpse of a page I should not have seen at that age.)

How was your Golden Week? Mine was very busy.
(Nice sentences.)

It should be placed in high shelf that chldren can't see or reach.
(They should be placed on high shelves where children cannot see or reach them.)

I think those manga and magazines should be wrapped in plastic when it cell in convenience store or like that small placese
(I think those manga and magazines should be wrapped in plastic when they are sold in convenience stores or small stores like that.)

but It's good practice.
(Yes - writing is very good practice!)

I went to a library for getting on internet sites last month, and I needed to show the ID card as a driving license or something. Because I forgot my member's card for the library, but I've forgotten both of them.
So, I was showed downstairs for children.
(I went to a library to use the internet last month. I had forgotten my member's card, so they asked me to show ID as proof of my age. Unfortunately, I didn't have any, so I was only allowed to use the children's computers.) [You should be happy that you look so young!]

I'm not familiar with the situation in foreign countries, but I hear Japan's law against depiction of pornography is rather lax.
(Nice sentence, but change "law" to "laws.")

I read an article that some American was arrested because he had imported manga books depicting sexual abuse of children.
(I read an article about an American who was arrested...)

I assume bikini itself isn't the point. ( or " I don't think bikini itself is the point."?)
(I don't think that the bikini itself is the real issue.)

They did ジャンケンで負けて服を脱ぐ game! I'm sorry I don't like to judge people but they seemed they were very happy ,,,, they seemed not 恥ずかしい! I still remember how surprised we were....
(I was very surprised when I came to Japan too! I saw a TV show where three girls were standing in the studio topless. One of them had had breast implants, and the men on the show had to poke them with a stick and guess which one she was!)

That's all for today. Have a great weekend, and I will be back on Monday with a much lighter topic!

Comments

Hi David,

I can't believe that incidents! "A mobile phone web site that was set up by a 17-year-old high school student", " indecent images of her infant son"!! I'm shocked beyond words... I don't want to say this, but I'm ashamed of my country...

Thanks for giving us a lot of feedback. It was a difficult topic(and a bit embarrassing one for women), but I have a daughter to protect, so it was a good opportunity for me to study. It seems like I need to do some more research on this issue.

If those manga had something to do with the increase in those crime or events, it might need to be banned
(If it could be proven that those manga were responsible for an increase in those types of crimes or incidents, they might need to be banned.)

I knew my sentence was not good, but I couldn't think of any other expressions, and I was not sure which article to use before "increase". Thank you:)

I don't have any bad image for manga
(I don't have any negative feelings about manga)

This is exactly what I wanted to say!

I liked the expression "I hope you won't mind if..." It's useful and sounds 大人っぽい.(←I don't know how to put it.., maybe nice and polite?) Anyway, I'll try to use it sometime.

Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

Tomo

PS I'm glad to hear you are going to give us a much lighter topic next week. Please don't change your mind! 笑

Hello, David-san.

Thank you so much for your feedback!
I wrote down some sentences because I don't want to forget your feedback.

It always takes time for me to write my opinions in English, but I will try to write them in English more.

Today is the Friday the 13th here (in the U.S.).
Have a great weekend!

Hi,David,

Thank you for your feedback!
I know some people who draw manga to make their livings. Their works are quite wholesome, stories of youth, but even they say it'll be tough for people like them if a law which prescribes strict restrict on manga, so we need to think about it carefully.

By the way, I'm writing this comment from iPod touch which my dad bought me for my early birthday present because he could get a discount during Golden Week for the first time! They really know customer's psychology!
I'm toying with it:) at the moment.

Have a lovely weekend!

Hi David,

Thanks for your feedback. It’s pretty hard for me to write about these kinds of topics in English, so I learnt a lot of things this time.
I bet you are sick and tired of hearing this but…I had a busy day. Glad that tomorrow is weekend.
Have a nice weekend;)

Hi David,

Thank you for the feedback! It's a good chance for us to think about pornography in Japan. As a parent, I should think about what we can do to protect children from they are exposed to pornography.

I have a question. You said "One thing that surprised me in Japan was seeing young girls in the men's bath". I think they are not so common. But I often see boys (only young boys) in women's bath or I took my sons with me when they were little. Is it acceptable in your country?

Hi Animal Farm,

I'm glad that you agree with my thought.
You don't need to call me Fumie san. This blog is a casual one, and it's ok for us on a first name basis.
You also said "Mr. David". David wrote in his book that put Mr. before first name is wrong. I know you are nice person and tried to respect him. :)

Have a lovely weekend!

Fumie

Hi Fumie,

In my country, there are no onsens, and no one would ever think about taking a bath with people they didn't know. It's a completely different culture.

Hi David,

Thanks for your feedback. I've learned a lot from your feedback as always.

>(I read an article about an American who was arrested..→ This is exactly what I have to keep in mind to write more natural sentence.
>(I don't think that the bikini itself is the real issue.)
→when I wrote this, the phrase 'real issue' didn't come to mind. Yes, this phrase is very useful ,and I'd like to be accustomed to use this.
Actually, I wanted to avoid using the same sentence 'I don't think', so I tried to use ' assume' and made the first sentence. But you usually say,'I don't think....(positive sentence)', so I was not sure what to say. Thanks for your help.

I'm afraid Yesterday was really 'Friday the 13th' to me, but it's over now!

Have a lovely weekend,everyone!

Anne

Hi David,

Thank you for answering my question.
>No one would ever think about taking a bath with people they didn't know.
I see. I assume Westerners might hesitate to take a bath with strangers when they travel to Japan.

Fumie

Hi Fumie.

Thank you for giving me useful advice!
I didn't know that we don't put Mr. before first name. It was good to know for me. Thanks!

Animal Farm

Hi guys, what’s up? Hope you are having a nice weekend. It’s a lovely day here in Tokyo. It’s a perfect day for taking a walk, but I am too tired to do so, but I am popping out for a while, because I have to return some books to the library.

bye for now,

Hello David.
This is the first time for me to write a comment on this blog.

Recently I have made a community for English writing.
I'm the manager of the community.
But I'm uncertain whether my English of the introduction.

I know making mistakes is inevitable.
But I wanna strain at the introduction because it's the first article that everyone who come to the community read.

So if you have time, please check my introduction.

WE-Writing English-

I will be active in my business around the world in the future.

So I wanna improve my English to express what I wanna say clearly .

If you have any opportunity to exercise your English writing, (for example TOEFL or EIKEN etc.), please accompany me on this activity.

Here is this community rules.

Hi David,

Thank you for your feedbacks, and I'm looking forward to where my sentences and your feedbacks are every time.
As David said, I should be happy because surely I look so young!

I was surprised at the incident for posting child pornography, and also even episode about men's bath in onsen. The latter is, that't right, pretty strange, I think. Like, I wonder this is exactly difference of culture!

Hi new members,
Glad to have you with us!

Have a nice weekend, everyone! See you on next comments.

Hi Chiki,

You don't need to put "S" after feedback, because feedback is uncountable. just FYI.

Good night and sleep tight:)
amo

Hello again.

I didn't know that we don't put "S" after feedback!
Everyone is so kind here :) Thanks!
See you soon.

Hi amo and animal farm,

I also wondered if I should put ' s' after feedback because David kindly had corrected lots of sentences when I first saw this word^^)
amo,thanks for reminding me again.

The weather is fine today and I'm heading for the seaside,'お魚広場' now.

Bye for now,

Anne

Hi David

Thank you for your feedback!
I hope you won't mind if I sometimes make a bit silly comment on the blog :)

Hi menbers!

I always wanted to join this blog and share this world.
I 'm going to perticipate in here as much as I can in English(avoid my son's attack! He's in "trouble two"!)

Nice to meet you all :)

Hi Taka,

I think your writing community is a very nice idea. It might also be a good idea to introduce your members to this blog. If anyone is unsure whether a sentence is correct, they can post it here and get feedback. (And yes everyone, "feedback" is uncountable, so it never takes an "s.")

Here are my comments on your introduction:

I will be active in my business around the world in the future.
(I don't really understand this. I suspect it is a translation of something that we probably would not say in English. Do you mean something like "I am hoping to do business with people from other countries in the future"?

So I wanna improve my English to express what I wanna say clearly .
(Okay, but "wanna" is not a word, and we certainly do not use it in writing. It might also be better to say "so that I can express what I want to say clearly.")

If you have any opportunity to exercise your English writing, (for example TOEFL or EIKEN etc.), please accompany me on this activity.
(If you have an opportunity to write in English (e.g., through TOEFL, EIKEN, etc.), I hope you will join me in this activity.

Here is this community rules.
(Here are the rules of the community.)

(You can write about any topic for any purpose.)
(It might be more natural to say "You can write about anything you like.)

(2)It's helpful to suggest a better expression when you find a mistake or obscure phrase.
(Please suggest alternatives when you find a mistake or an obscure phrase.)

By the way, if you are going to be focussing on writing, I think that two of my books would be useful for you. They are; "An A-Z of Common English Errors" and the "English Writing Manual" (This book is only 500 yen.) You can see sample pages from both of them at www.btbpress.com.

Let me know if you have any other questions, and good luck with your project.

Hi,David and everyone
This is my first comment on the blog.
I happened to find this blog and I think this blog is very interesting for me.
Because I am not very good at writing English (and speaking English)
Therefore I may not be able to express what I want to say.
After this I’m going to make an effort to write my English in my free time so that I can express what I want to say in English.

Nice to meet you all and Good night.
