Although I commented that I didn’t want to be a mother like not to talk to their children at a restaurant, I thought about my attitude to my son concerning information devices such as cell phone, PC, DVD, etc.
For example;

1. When I wake him up at his nap, I occasionally use my cell phone to play a game music into it, or set on his video in it. He aware of these and wakes up with good mood.
2. I usually switch on a TV at my house keeping time, so that he doesn’t bother me.
Etc…

I have been suspicious of how information devices affected kids’ blain since he was born, but allow him show and listen to( for doing my house keeping… sorry this might be just an excuse ;( )

I tried to set up Skype on my dad-in-law's computer last night and tried it again tonight too, but ended up giving up. I realized that I'm way behind high technology after all. However, I think I made it on another computer of my husband. The camera is built in, so I don't need the camera that I bought. As everyone says, tense is difficult and confusing when make up sentences. So every time you correct our comments as feedback, I have to check them.

I read the article about Japanese adults' attitude towards people from overseas you mentioned. It was interesting. Then I had a look of your entry which Fumie told us. (Thanks, Fumie! It's very nice of you:)) I did, like a brief glimpse, at first, but soon I could feel your irritation and passion to tell us the severe problem that Japanese have, and that makes feel uncomfortable for foreigners who live in Japan or who are tying to settle in and it was so sobering that gradually I started to read it carefully. It was so heated and so long that I couldn't read through all the comments posted to your entry by now.
I think that Japanese tend to use stale cliche to full silence. Maybe we too much care how people think or feel because we don't like to be isolated or want to do what others do, I can't get that though. One of my friend from Thai said that Japanese people care ages unduly so it's hard for her to make good friends here.
I like your friend's expression 'othering' by the way.
I have loads of things to say on this subject, but I'll leave it till next time. Sorry to get off the track. But at the end, let me just say that I love English rather than American one! But unfortunately, we study English based on American English so I hardly can hear it. too bad.

I don't watch American Idol but I just checked Scotty on You Tube. His voice is awesome! gifted!! He doesn't look like 17, rather looks like in his late twenties probably because of his voice. I wish I could have an amazing voice:/

"Pros and cons" is a noun phrase. You can say either "the pros and cons are" or "I am for or against." If I remember rightly, you wrote, "Putting aside if I am pros or cons...." If you want to use that expression, it would have to be "Putting aside the pros and cons,,,." "These ten years" is not wrong, but it's not an expression people use very often. "These days" is fine.

Hi Fumie,

"I couldn't live without a computer" is better because it is an unreal condition. Tomo actually does have a computer, so she is not living without one. If you said, "I can't live without a computer," it would mean 今なくて困っています. "A good night's rest" would be fine if you included the apostrophe. Sorry, I misunderstood what you wanted to say.

Hi Cocon,

"Agree with" is used to say that you share the same feeling about something as somebody else. "Agree to" is used when you want to say that you accept somebody else's proposal or say that you will do something that someone else asked you to do. It's a different meaning of "agree" from 賛成.

I agreed to help my friend move house this weekend. (=She asked me, and I said yes.)

They agreed to my proposal. (= I made a proposal, and they accepted it.)

About your question “agree with” and “agree to,” if you want to say あなたと同意見です（賛成です）you can say, “I agree with you” but the sentence that David corrected is not the same as this one. I am not sure but I think Tomo didn’t agree with(賛成した) but she agreed to(同意した or 応じた) her son’s suggestion.

Thank you for your feedback. I found it interesting to read questions from some members for the feedback. I call it “フィードバックのフィードバック.” There are lots of things to learn in the questions and answers from David. By the way, in the last entry, I was amazed how good kyon’s summary of an article about a survey for children. Kyon’s writing was so clear and concise that I managed to read through. I thought if I had read the original article, I wouldn’t have understood it at all. To summarize things, like stories or news, is one of the most difficult tasks for me.

If you don’t mind, I have something to ask you. Last year you joined a meditation seminar, didn’t you? And then you told that you kept doing meditation by yourself. Do you still keep doing it? How does it work on you? Does it help your daily life?

I just went to my local supermarket. There was a man standing in front of me in the line, waiting while his wife paid for their shopping. He looked at me and said, "Okii ne." Then he said, "shincho nansenchi?" Is this really the kind of question to ask a person you have never met before? I cannot think of any other country where that would happen. When I answered, the next comment, of course, was "nihongo jyozu desu ne." He was very friendly, and I'm sure he was a very nice man, but this is not an appropriate way for adults to behave. I do not like being made to feel like a tourist when I go to my local supermarket on a Sunday morning!

Like the man who wrote the letter in the Japan Times, I think that there is an urgent need for people in Japan to learn how to deal with differences. It will be difficult for Japan to become a truly international country until this happens. People who live here and who have made the effort to learn the language should not be made to feel like outsiders every time they leave their house.

The really stupid thing, of course, is that I am not big at all! There were at least two Japanese men nearby who were taller than me, but the man did not say anything to them. He did not believe me when I said that I am only 177 cm tall, and he insisted that I must be at least 185 cm.

I remember once when I was teaching at a junior high school in Sapporo and one of the boys said to me, でかい！ I pointed out that in fact, he was taller than I was, which surprised him. He then said, 手がでかい！I put my hand up against his to show him that again, his hand was bigger than mine. He was really surprised this time, and he said, 俺もでかい！I didn't know whether to laugh or cry!

It was interesting to read feedback's feedback, which is named by taco. I didn't know the difference between 'agree with' and 'agree to'. Both expressions are handy to use in any situation.

You ware annoyed again! It is irksome to be said that sort of thing
in a supermarket, I bet. I think he just wanted to have a conversation with you, but even so, he should've said something else, like just talking to his neighbors. I suppose the Japanese have a strong stereotype of foreign people and have a kind of inferiority to foreigners because of the post WWⅡ. It can be a sort of adoration I guess. I cannot explain well, even to myself. But it is no doubt that if Japan wants to be international, we have to change our attitude and know about cultures of other countries. Also foreign people need to know Japanese nature and habit as well.

By the way, I took TOEIC today. I managed to complete the answer sheet. There were lot of readings so I got tired a bit. I hope it was okay. I needed to because I'm taking an open lecture which is delivered by municipal uni for two months from June of 1st, and the professor from the uni wants to get our results to compare the results which I'm supposed to take when the lecture is finished. Then, the professor said, that he can lead the results to practical use of how to improve students' English in general.
