Japanese Cars (Feedback)

Thanks for all your comments. I was a bit worried that a lot of you would say, "I don't know anything about cars" and just give up, so I was happy to see so many responses.

These days, I think that more and more people are starting to think about fuel efficiency. By the way, be careful with "economic" and "economical." Many native speakers make mistakes with these words. "Economic" means connected to the study of economics (economic theories, economic principles, etc.), and "economical" means 経済的.

Over the last few years, Japanese car makers have chosen to focus on hybrids and electric vehicles. European manufacturers are starting to develop these cars as well now, but their focus for the last decade has been on making highly efficient diesel engines. Many people who buy expensive luxury cars like Mercedes and BMW buy them with diesel engines in the UK. I don't think those versions are even sold in Japan. My friend Aoki san drives a Land Rover. It's a nice car, but I was very surprised when I saw that he had bought the one with a gasoline engine. When I asked him why, he said that the diesel version is not imported.

Anyway, here is some feedback on your comments from this topic.

(In Britain, we would say "fuel efficiency," but I think Americans say "gas mileage.")

Hi David,

I appreciated your corrections and feedback on our comments this time too. I don't usulally talk about cars, so that was a good opportunity for me. I'll remember the correct spelling 'license':) I'm going to read it again at the weekend. See you.

Hi David,

Thanks for your feedback.

I love to drive, so I couldn't imagine the my life without my car.
(惜しい! This is a good sentence, but you don't need "the my" before "life.")
惜しい?悔しい!(笑)
最初は"life"の前に何もつけないで書いたのですが、"the my"をあとで付け足したんです。考えすぎました^^;
実はこの文、最初に頭の浮かんだのは「I love to drive, so I can't imagine life without my car.」だったんです。
でも、前回Fumieがcan'tとcouldn'tの違いの質問をしていたことを思い出し、読み直してみたんです。(Thanks Fumie!)
この場合、日本語では「車のない生活は考えられません」と現在形になりますが、can'tを使うと、今私は車を持っていない、というニュアンスになってしまうんですよね?今現在私は車を持っているから、 couldn'tになる…。そういう解釈で合っていますか?

Amica

"License" is the American spelling. In British English, it is "licence." I use American spelling a lot these days because that is what Japanese people have been taught.

Hi David and everyone

Thanks for your corrections and feedback.

>Because I am not interested in cars at all. (At least, I have a driving license.)
(I do have a driving license, though.) [Use "do" for emphasis.]

I can’t spring to me that using “do” for emphasis.
I know it for grammar, however I’m not able to say it like that when I should use it.
I am going to try to use it actively.

In this topoc, I learned many thing about cars from everyone’s comment.
I will remember that thoughts everyone commented in this blog. (If there is a chance for me to buy a car,・・・)

Have a lovely weekend ,
Good night.

Hi David,

Thanks for your feedback. You know what? I always look forward to reading your feedback. We learn a lot of things from it.
Tomorrow is my niece’s sports day, and I am going to see it, which means I have to wake up earlier than usual, so maybe I should go to bed now.

Good night and have a nice weekend,

Hi David,

Thank you for your feedback!

and he once bought two cars at a time.
(and he once bought two cars at the same time.)

I don't know why I couldn't think of "at the same time" when I was writing this. Maybe it's because I was trying to translate "一度に".

I don't know much about cars, so it was a bit difficult for me to talk about them, but I'm glad I tried it because I learned new expressions. Thanks:)

Hi Amica,
I think your interpretation is right;-)

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Tomo

Hi, David,
Thank you very much for your feedback.
What I wanted to say was "... and which had a good turning circle".
Nissan Serena is too big for me like beginner. To try to write down what I'm not that familiar with in English is quite a good practice for me and good way to learn new vocabulary.

by the way, today is my birthday, I mean, yesterday (June of 3rd, so maybe "today was...") and I became 22 now! My friends gave me some presents and receive a post card, so, soooo pleased:)

Good night and have a nice rest.

Momo, Happy Birthday to you! I didn't think you are sooo young because you write English very fluently. Good luck on everything!!

David, I just made the typo, but I got relieved to know 'licence' was not wrong. Thank you.

Hi David,

Thank you for your feedback.

Lots of good things will happen to you this year.

Happy Birthday momo♪

Oh ,I made a mistake,momo.
I should have written," hope lots of good things will happen to you."
By the way, as tsuneko mentioned, I didn't think you are soo young, either.

Happy birthday Momo. It's nice to find out that we are about the same age :-)

Hi momo,

Hi David,

Thank you so much for your valuable feedback!
After having responded to this blog for a while, I've decided to pay attention to my mistakes like I am in my college classes.
Writing my opinion here is not only challenging, but also helpful to improving my writing skills!
I wish I could be a great writer like you ;-)

By the way,
I read your daily schedule about your meditation. I think I need to go there :) but it seems pretty hard!
I want to open my eyes in my mind, but I don't think I can shut my mouth down for 10 days!
I live in North America and they have the course here, so someday I want to take my husband too :)
To open THE door to take the 10-day course is pretty courageous....

Hi, Taco!
Thank you for the information!
I read the blog written on November, 29 2010 about a "life-changing experience."
Also, I visited the website about Vipassana meditation!
It seems healthy, peaceful, and nirvana-like.
I've expanded my vocabulary! Someday, I may have to try it ☆

Hi Momo,

Hi Fumie,
Are you having a great time with your mother?

Hi momo,
Happy birthday from my heart!!!

I don't have enough time to read and write down comments this week. Already weekend has come! I was bit busy for joining a piano concert.
I'd like to have your episode for Korea, too, fume.

See you everyone!

Hi David,

Thank you for your corrections.

Thank you very much for all of your "happy birthday" comments, guys!! I'm so glad! yeh, we are about the same age, David. Definitely;p

Hi Momo,
♪ Happy belated birthday ♪

Yes , we have exactly a same car. This February I had a big car accident. I totally damaged a family car, but I was completely O.K, I mean 'physically'.
So we newly bought a Nissan Serena with some help from automobile damage insurance money. I like Serena as it has a lot of space for people. It is covenient for us to have a big car as we often travel with another family.

See you next week.

Hi David and everyone,

As I said, I went to see my niece’s sports meet yesterday. It was a perfect day for sports. It’s too hot for me, so I ended up having a headache at night. Of course, it was fun to watch her performance.

Good night and see you tomorrow

Hi David,

Hi David,

Thank you for the feedback. I learned a lot from your corrections.

Hi Anne, Tomo, Amica, David, Animal Farm and Chiki.

Thank you for your warm messages. I got back from Korea last evening. We had a fabulous time there although we couldn't do everything we wanted to do as I worried. We didn't enough time. And things are harder for me than I thought. Our trip isn't a packed tour which a tour conductor guide us everywhere and do everything for us. So I asked someone something all the time. At places where local people mostly go, people only speak Korean. Anyway I managed to get through asking in English. I realised that English is really helpful when we travel abroad. エステ(beauty treatment?) is good for me but my mom decided not to take it because she was too tired. And her choice was right because it was too strong for elderly.(sauna is too hot, あかすり(skin rubbing?) is a bit strong). Most food are great! I can see why Korean people are slim and beautiful. Korean food is quite healthy. Food makes people. We enjoyed the performance callled Nanta (the theme of it is cooking). It is really entertaining! I recommend you this. You can see it in Japan although the cost is about twice than that of Korean. Unfortunately walking around a lot was hard for my mom so she was waiting sitting somewhere while I was walking around at some places. I felt sorry for her about that. Things must be easier for her if she was 5 or 10 years younger. I couldn't do enough shopping. (I'm not a shopperholic so it's ok) All in all, it was a nice trip! I get already itchy to another foreign country.

Fumie
