Organ Donation (Feedback)

Thank you for all your comments. As many of you pointed out, this is a really difficult topic. Actually, it was coincidental that I chose this particular topic in the same week as the story about the gangster and the hospital director hit the news. I hadn't heard about that until Tsuneko mentioned it here, but it was one of the stories in the Google UK headlines this morning. It must have been a terrible experience for the doctor, but it sounds a bit suspicious to me. I can't believe that the hospital who did the transplant did not ask questions about the donor being the recipient's "step-son." I am going to discuss this topic on Monday with a group of doctors who actually do kidney transplants, so I will ask them about that.

Anyway, here is some feedback on your comments.

When my mother died, my sister and I said no to give some parts of my mom to someone else even though she had given permission and written something on paper before.

If I had been the current ages, I might have said OK.

In the U.S. when you get a driver's license you have to choose to be an organ donor or not.
(You have to choose whether to be an organ donor or not.) [That's actually a really good idea. That may be one reason why the US has a lot more transplants than Japan. I wonder if it is the same in every state? Japanese people have to renew their driving licences often, so that would be a good system to adopt here.]

When you have a chance to visit Washington D.C., I strongly recommend visiting there.
(This is another useful structure that you can adapt to talk about lots of different places.)

I already told my family to give my organs to people who need them if something would happen to me.
(...if something happens to me.)

The important thing is that we should show our will about what we want to do our organs in case of worst situation even if we are healthy.

On the other hand, what would happen to me if my child died young? I would fall in the catch 22 situation between two feelings that I don't want to get hurt the body of my beloved child and that my child can live on in a recipient's body.
(This is not really a "catch 22 situation. You might say, "I would be torn between not wanting the doctors to hurt the body of my beloved child and wanting a part of my child to live on in another body.)

I've never talked about this topic with my family. Maybe I should ask my family what they think about this first.

Of course, this would not cover children. I cannot even begin to imagine the feelings of parents who lost a child, but there again, I cannot imagine the feelings of parents of a child who was going to die unless he or she found a donor. As many of you said, it's a really difficult situation.

Anyway, thanks again for making this a really meaningful discussion. I'll try to think of a lighter topic for next week :-)

You reminded us to think about donation in case we have never think about it. I hope Japan will have a system like the one in the US soon too.

It has been quite hot and humid for a couple of days already. The temparature of yesterday at Kanto area reached almost 40 degrees. Even so we shouldn't turn on the air-conditioner or have to set it at low temparature this year. Be careful the heat, everyone!

Correction

Come to think of it, set the air-conditioner at low temparature doesn't mean saving energy. Sould I write that set the air-conditioner at high temparature or moderate temparature? I'm confused. What is the correct way to say エアコン（冷房）の温度を高めに設定する？

I don't remember when we discussed about it here before, but I concluded that if you "turn up the air-donditioner", it will use more power and cost more both in summer and winter.

I think "turn up the air conditioner" is probably the most natural way to say that, but you could also say "set the air conditioner at a lower temperature than usual."

Hi David,

About “turn up” and “a lower temperature,” I got a bit confused by your comment.
I thought that “turn up” means 「強める」 and “turn down” means　「弱める」 so if you say “turn up the air conditioner.” translate into 「冷房を強める（温度を下げる）」and if you say “turn down the air conditioner.” translate into 「冷房を弱める（温度を上げる）」 to But you said “turn up the air conditioner” means 「冷房の温度を高めに設定する」
Which means my understanding was wrong. Also, “set the air conditioner a lower temperature than usual,” in this sentence “a lower temperature” doesn’t mean 「低めの温度」right? It’s very confusing.

Thank you so much for giving a thoght to my question! Sorry for the late reply. To tell you the truth, it took me long to figure out this matter.
Why does this matter so confused me is that there is no word for ”冷房or クーラー”in English. Air-conditioner covers both heater and クーラー.
So when we talk about the temparture it confuse us. Anyway I think I finally understand this matter.(?)

"Turn up the air-conditioner"
エアコンを強める。夏は温度を下げる。冬は温度を上げる。

"Turn down the air-conditioner"
エアコンを弱める。夏は温度を上げる。冬は温度を下げる。

"Set the air-conditioner at a lower temparature"
エアコンの温度を下げる。夏は電力をより使う。冬は節電。

Speaking of air-conditioner and temparature, what is going on at my workplace is; the authority (職場を管理してる部門）set the rule to set the temparature of all air-conditioners at 28degrees during summer. But last year, some employees reset it and lowered the temparature. This year, the authority totally control all workplaces and if someone lowers the temparature, they will find the person and he/she has to pay the penalty. (給料から温度を下げた分の罰金を引かれる）。
Isn't this too much?
One teacher said, the higher the temparature, there would be more fights among students.

It's another scorcher today, my body is almost going to melt down.

Fumie,thanks for giving me a chance to think about "エアコンの設定温度を上げる（下げる）." Actually, when I was thinking about it, I never thought about winter. Air conditioner is used both in winter and summer, and it makes confusion. Fumie's summery cleared up these confusions. Thanks!
By the way, when I went to a college nearby my house yesterday, air conditioner was set not to be turned on! It was very hot!

Ive said before its easier for Alex to grasp this acting thing thats required on the show cause it helps being a punk ass boy. A lot of male actors that Ive read their interviews say they were either punks, rebellious or comedic type when they were teens in school, and it made it natural for them to get into acting by joining drama class and they could act out in there, and enjoyed it. Alex and his twin brothers have that kind of punkish personality too. You see in the ford commercial Alex is doing a hand stand, and when they went to do the recycling he wanted to do it hopping on a car. Its just natural for him to have fun in front of the camera and the person making the videos likes that he gives them something to work with thats why its more interesting when the episode focuses on him.

The owners OWN the business. This is america they can make as much money as they can. The players are employees of that business. Im sure you workyou get paid what the owner of your company is willing to pay and Im sure that owner makes WAY more % of money than the NFL owner does. This is no different than any company in the world thats out to make maximum profits. The players want more money? Have them start their own league and take the risks/debts the owners have then they can get whatever the market is willing to pay for their product.

Eileen Barraaasarra? I hope that is correct. I dont know what your motive but your entire note is a flat out lie, the only people that go south for treatment are those that are not life threatening. However many people in border communities from the USA have Canadian medical cards. I know of nobody that has been deprived of health care here, but have family that died in California from what should have been minor treatment. Nobody in the Canadian system other than your Dr. will recommend/ or not any proceedure. If you dont like that you can change Dr.s it is called second opinion. I do not know your motive but youve presented false and missleading information. Canadas system and that of many other countries COVERS EVERYBODY EQUALLY no e4xceptions period!! Our system is so much better than that of the USA it is impossible to compare. The USA for the most part is very third world or less!

When the occasion calls for it we will have a delicious dinner at Delmonico or Enigma, such as a birthday or anniversary. I dont mind paying the price when the food is that good. Havent tried the new Tallys yet, maybe I am too used to the old Tallys to pay those kind of dinner prices there. Will have to try it for myself before I make that kind of decision.
