Stress & Relaxation
Last week, we were talking a bit about meditation, and it got me thinking that stress and relaxation in general would be a good topic. It's not too difficult, and I think a lot of people will be interested in it.
I saw a report in the Japan Times the other day about a worldwide survey of happiness and general satisfaction with life. Apparently, Japan is really, really low. (I think it was third from bottom, if I remember correctly.) One of the problems that many Japanese people mentioned was "work/life balance."
In some ways, it is strange that we suffer so much from stress even though our lives are much, much easier than our ancestors' lives were. I think the problem is not the amount of stress we have, but the type of stress. Our ancestors had a lot of stress as well, but it was the type of stress that humans are designed for. Nowadays, we live in a completely different world, and we have to deal with stresses and problems that do not suit our natural instincts.
Anyway, it's a simple topic, so here are my questions:
1) What are the biggest causes of stress in your life?
2) What do you do to relax? Do you have any special relaxation methods or techniques?
I'll give you my answers to the questions on Friday.
Look forward to reading your comments.

Hi David and everyone
This topic is stress, and I think that stress is strange.
Whether you feel stress depends on each method of thinking.
For example, the man who has positive thinking don’t feel stress much while, the man who has negative thinking feel much stress, I think.
Here are my answers on this topic.
1) When I was college student, I was commuting a long distance.
This made me feel much stress.
But, now it takes me less than 30 minutes to go to work.
2) My relaxation is eating much and sleeping well.
It’s simple, but the most effective methods for me to relax.
Needless to say, eating much doesn’t mean to drink and eat too much.
Eating slightly more than usual and sleeping soundly are the best relaxations for me.
I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s comments.

Hi David and all,
I'll be busy for coming two weeks, so I'm afraid I just want to answer to your questions.
1) What are the biggest causes of stress in your life?
They are deadlines. If there is no deadline in my life, I could possibly live without any stress. Mind you, I'm not a writer or any specialist. I mean lots of things in daily life have deadlines.
2) What do you do to relax? Do you have any special relaxation methods or techniques?
I have neither special relaxation methods nor techniques, so I just soak longer in the bathtub than usual, or moving the furniture and change the atomosphere of the room. Maybe, I do just escape from the key problem. The methods or techiniques to achieve tasks before deadlines will be the most effective way to get rid of my stresses.
Look forward to all of your posts. See you.

My mum has been doing some research about umbrellas, and she sent me this:
The umbrella is a universal symbol for protection from the storms of life. The umbrella has been around for some 3000 years. It was thought that the first umbrellas were to represent the heavens. In the ancient cultures of the Far East, Africa, and Europe the umbrella represented royalty and power. The superstition of it being bad luck to open indoors may have been started because people saw it as an act that insulted the spirit of the household by implying that their protection is inadequate.

Hi David and everyone,
Morning:) I am on my way to work, and I should say that commuting on a crowded train is one of the biggest causes of my stress. I will answer your questions properly tonight.
See you and have a nice day;)

Hi David and everyone,
Thank you for your feedback as always David.
Did the other sentence make sense? If so, I’m happy and lucky :)
Hi momo,
Belated happy birthday! I was also surprised that you’re so young as tsuneko and Anne mentioned. Are you belonged any Uni or somewhere?
Anyway, have a great coming year :)
Hi Fumie,
Welcome back to Japan :)
I enjoyed your report trip to Korea. Have you studied Korean for this trip?
I was touched this story you took your mother with you. Did you take a lot of photos?
By the way, here are my thoughts,
1) What are the biggest causes of stress in your life?
Biggest one so far is, to worry my mother who has heart disease.
She will be 75 coming this July. She’s usually okay, but sometimes her heart cause a trouble.
She doze a medicine named “ワルファリン” everyday.
However, these medicine are known that cause the other serious problems like “脳出血”.
I happened to know that new type of medicine is coming soon by paper the other day( God, I forget the name!)
The newspaper announced that this new medicine don’t have a problem like I mentioned above, and it also said; “およそ半世紀以上続いたワルファリンに代わる、新時代を切り開く新薬である”
I hope she will get a new one ASAP.
2) What do you do to relax? Do you have any special relaxation methods or techniques?
Walking and dancing, makes me relax.
I’m participate in ballet club two or three times a month. I’m usually tired after the lesson, whereas I get myself back
Besides, walking is a good for me.
Inhaling fresh airs makes me refresh.
I lived in NZ in 2007(for a short period), I had a short trip to Queenstown.
At that time, I dropped by “Arrow Town”
I walked and walked side of the stream in the forest. As I took a deep breath, I felt myself recover.
That was a mini ” トランピング“.
My husband has been to the mental clinic. He’s not in serious condition though.
The doctor suggested him that do not excise like 無酸素運動 but 有酸素運動 for relax himself.
I understand this now.
I’m looking forward to reading David’s and everyones’ opinion.

Hi David and everyone,
1) What are the biggest causes of stress in your life?
It is tough to get along with the person who is always saying something negative.
For me, this kind of things is cause of stress.
Do you have any special relaxation methods or techniques?
I often vent it to my friend, so I can be a person who is always saying something negative.
What a funny things!

Hi, David and everyone,
How are you doing?
Today was pretty chilly. I couldn't believe that the weather was extremely hot a couple of days ago!
I had to put my blanket in the closet recently, but I took it out from the closet!
Anyway, this is my story about stress and relaxation.
1)My biggest cause of stress was presentations in school last semester.
I really wanted to escape from presentations because they made me nervous and uncomfortable.
I knew if I escaped from presentations the first time, I would keep escaping from them again and again.
I really didn’t want to make myself like that.
Then I decided to think about how to deal with those pressures, to make myself comfortable during presentations, I did two things.
First, tried not to control my feelings and just did let my nervousness go.
Next, tried not to protect myself and instead be ready to take a risk.
It took several times but it did work. My feeling changed about giving presentations.
I am still nervous, but I truly like to give my presentations now!
2) I have a number of relaxation methods in my life.
My primary method is to see my family’s smiles :-)
A second method is to go to a beautiful outdoor café and read books with a very delicious coffee.
And a third method is to climb One-Thousand-Steps a series of steps in the mountain near my house!
It was very hard, especially going down.
My knees and calves screamed while I was going up and going down. (How 運動不足 I am...)
I chose to climb, but I questioned myself, “why do I have to do this; I don’t want to do this again.”
After finishing it; however, it gave me a great
pick-me-up! Then I wanted to go back again soon!
It was like eating chocolate ice cream! I couldn’t stop!
Hi Noriko,
I am sorry to hear that... your mother's situation.
Actually, my husband is still young but he had to have an open heart surgery last December.
He is OK now. I understand how much you are worried about your mother. I pray for her and she can find "新時代を切り開く新薬" soonest.
Hi Fumie,
I am glad you had a nice trip and came back to Japan safely!
By the way, did you use this word "カカジュセヨ♥" in Korea? I hope you did ;)
I miss あかすり and サウナ.
Have a fabulous day at work!
See ya.

Hello David and David’s mum,
It was me who wrote about a superstition of umbrella in a former entry. Thank you very much for the research. It was very interesting and totally new, such as “umbrellas represent heavens, royalty, and power” and “the umbrella is a symbol for protection from the storms of life.” This is the first time I have heard these kinds of idea, and I believe most Japanese people don’t know either. I read the last sentence twice (or more!) to understand what it said.
つまり、「室内で傘を開くということは、家についている精霊たちのご加護が十分じゃないことをほのめかして侮辱する行為と見なされるから。」ということでしょうか。
Thank you very much, David’s mum. I was really happy to read this comment.
ありがとうございます、Davidのお母さん。
I hope I could post my comment about this week topic by the end of this week!

Hi David and everyone,
Konbanwa! This is Ken again. I have just lost about 2000 letters' comment, which suddenly disappeared after I clicked the PREVIEW button. I was really shocked and felt so much stress.... haha....tears.
Well, I make up my mind again to rewrite it!
Kazu, I really agree with you about the stress, the reason why I do so, I will write it later.
1) What are the biggest causes of stress in your life?
I am working in a Group Home (グループホーム)for elderly persons as a manager cum a caregiver.
Group Home is specially meant for elderly persons who suffer from the dementia disease. We have 18 residents, or customers (利用者)in our Home, who are living and sharing life together, and we give care and support them from behind.
But at first, I felt a lot of stress in my customers and the disease 'dementia' itself, because I cannot anticipate what kind of responce they would give after our care. Sometimes they would be very angry or even become very violent suddenly after my inconsiderate speech or care to them.
I have been working there for 5 and a half years, and studying and trying to understand about the disease more and more. I took the examination for the national qualification of 認知症ケア専門士, and passed. Now, I do not feel any stress in the disease itself, nor in my work to give cares to them. I rather enjoy talking and sharing life with them in the Home everyday.
Currently, I feel the biggest stress in my superiors(社長とオーナー), then in my staff and lastly in the family of my customers.
My superiors do not care about their staff, who always suffer from tough working conditions which is special to our industry; low salary, long working hours and less holidays, irregular working shift, short of staff and unhygienic working environment, etc, etc...They always talk about their noble company policy, but just care about the business profit.
My staff always talk negative and give me a lot of headache... Kazu, I agree with you about the stress you feel, in this regard, haha... They actually feel so much stress in their work, therefore they tend to resign from the work easily, which gives me further stress(ストレスの負の連鎖).
Last, not every family of my customers, but only one particular family gives me very big stress recently. They always feel unsatisfied in our jobs, and complain to us a lot although we are working very hard. They also demand a lot from us which is giving us more headache.
2) What do you do to relax? Do you have any special relaxation methods or techniques?
Well, I love drinking after coming home from work, and feel very relaxed during this special moment. I used to drink only twice or three times a week last time, but recently I become drinking more, which is almost everyday, just except my night-shift day.
I mostly drink beer, and currently the Suntory Premium Maltz and the Silk Yebisu are the two best beer for me (although they are rather expensive). But also I like drinking 焼酎のオンザロック, and I prefer 黒糖焼酎 or 麦焼酎 to いも or 米.
I also love and feel relaxed when I watch my favorite TV program NHK世界ふれあい街歩き, which I usually record in the TV's hard-disc, and watch them repeatedly. When I watch the program, I really feel as if I am travelling in the town myself, talking to the people in the town. Recently I watched the program in London 'City', which was also very nice! は~疲れたなあ・・・尻切れトンボだあ。

Hi David,
Stress and relaxation? I’ve been thinking of what causes me to feel stress, after reading your new entry. Stress can come from so many different things depending on the person. Anyway, here are my answers for your questions:
1)The biggest causes of stress? I can’t think of anything but work. Most of all my stresses come from my work. Relationship with co-workers, complaints from the customers and things like that. I just remember that I felt stress when I went to school on Mondays and after holiday in my school days. Believe it or not, I was a very shy girl (still I am,) so I always felt like a stranger every Monday.
2)I don’t have anything special. I just do what I like to do- Listening to the music, watching movies, shopping and something like that. I sometimes look at pictures of my nieces and nephews when I feel stress at work. It eases my mind;)
I am looking forward to reading your answers on Friday.

I'm glad to see your comment and also I realized who you are.;-)

Hi David,
"Stress and Relaxation",it's a good topic.
Here are my thoughts.
I don't feel much stress recently. I love my job and my coworkers are mostly nice people. My childen became better behaved and cooperative after I started working and my life became busier. Not that I have any problems, each members of my family has some problems but things are getting better. For me I can achieve a good balance between work and family.
I think how much stress one feel might be depend on one's caracter. As for my children, my first son is a worrywart and my middle and youngest sons are happy-go-lucky boys. When their stomach make noise during the class, my first son worry too much but the younger twos just laugh and don't care.
I do following things to get rid of my stress.
Having quiet my time while watching favorite TV programs or reading interesting books, especially touching stories or tearjerkers; they have therapeutic effects.
I treat myself a cup of coffer with good aroma and some sweet. Do moderate excercise and sweat a bit. See beautiful nature and breeze in clean air.
Talk to my friends my worries and what I feel unpleasant.
Hi noriko,
I didn't study Korean but I tried to be able to read Hangul characters but I gave up. I heard reading Hangul character isn't so difficult but I couldn't. If I could read them it would saved me more. Some products are only written in Hangul characters so I couldn't figure what 's the ingredients are.
I didn't take much pictures.
You belong to a ballet club. I'm jealous of you. I want to learn ballet because ballet dancers are beautiful and have good postures. I want to be like them. Maybe it's too late (I'm too old for it).
I'm sorry about your mother. I really hope she can have new miraculous medicine and get better soon.
Hi Animal Farm,
You overcame the nervousness and willing to give your presentation. Way to go!
Climb 1000 steps up and down must be hard yet good exercise.
I'm so sorry about what had happened to your husband. But I'm glad to know that he is ok now.
I didn't know カカジュセヨ so I googled it. I should had known it before I went to Korea. I only knew two expressions, アニョハセヨ、カムサムニダ.
Korean food is great. We had 韓定食、サムゲタン、キムパッ、あわびがゆ but we didn' have time to have 焼き肉。(涙)
Catch you later!

Hello Mrs.Barker,
Thank you for sharing the story about the umbrella.
"The umbrella represented royalty and power"!?
It's new to me and is very interesting.
Hi David and Everyone,
It might be different depending on each person if he/she feels stress or not
even though he/she faces the same situation.
You might hear the expression “Is the glass half empty or half full?”
I think if you could see things as “half full”, it might be helpful to reduce your stress.
I also think there are two types of stress; good stress and bad stress.
When you try something new or challenging, you can’t avoid having stress, but once you get through
that situation, your satisfaction or a(the?) feeling of achievement might be even deeper.
I don’t drink, but I guess a glass of beer after that would be priceless.
I’m in my late 50s, so I have friends whose husbands have already retired. Some of them sometimes complain
that their husbands stay at home all the week, and it is very stressful.
I’m looking forward to know how I feel when my husband retires completely.
1) What are the biggest causes of stress in your life?
I’m not sure if it’s fortunate or unfortunate, but I don’t think I have severe stress. Having said that, when there are a lot of things to do, I feel tired, and that could cause the stress.
2) What do you do to relax? Do you have any special relaxation methods or techniques?
As I mentioned last week, I do abdominal breathing twice a day on Futon; just after I wake up and before got to sleep.
It’s been several years since I started doing this. Those days, I was taking care of my parents-in-law who were suffering from Alzheimer's. I was tired, felt stress, but I learned how to face with them and to deal with stress. As amo mentioned, doing what I love is the remedy to reduce the stress and there are lots.
Anyway, here are another ones how I relax:
* taking a bath and relax
* taking care of herbs in my garden every morning
( I like the smell of herbs.)
* getting a massage
* taking a walk
I trimmed the branches of trees yesterday morning, and I really felt good.
I focused on trimming branches, and thought nothing. I just heard the sound of shears and
I found that I like this work.
By the way, I happened to find a site “stress relief Game.”
I tried doing it, but couldn't get good score.
It was very stressful!!
Hi Fumie,
Thanks for sharing your story about your trip.
You seem to have had a great time there. I’m happy for you. I've never tried "あかすり”,but I'd love to try it sometime!
Bye for now,

Hi Animal Farm,
Thank you for your warming words :)
I was sorry to hear that your husband had an operation. But I'm sure you and your husband got over from huge risk and never be in yourselves such a tough situation ever.
My mum had been dealing with looking after to her dad-in-law (my grandfather, passed away) ,my aunt(also passed away),her aunt and her mum-in-law for ages.
I thought her heart finally told her "don't do that anymore"
New medicine still neither handed over her doctor nor my mum.
My stress is going to be little when my mum received new medicine and recover herself.
"First, tried not to control my feelings and just did let my nervousness go.
Next, tried not to protect myself and instead be ready to take a risk"
...あるがまま受け入れるということですね :)
I agree with you strongly.

Hi David and everyone,
I’m really amazed that many of you posted very long comments, thanks for sharing your stories. I’m afraid I can’t write a long comment, but I’d like to write something about this topic.
As some members have mentioned, whether you feel stress or not depends on what kind of personality you have, I agree with that. I’m the sort of person that likes to be alone, if I have to be with someone all the time, I will get very stressed. Anne, I think I understand what your friends feel.
Here are my answers to the questions.
1) What are the biggest causes of stress in your life?
It should be my family. My husband tends to be in depression sometimes, I have to comfort him but I can never understand him. My son who is a rebellious teenager also bothers me quite a lot.
2) What do you do to relax? Do you have any special relaxation methods or techniques?
My first choice is trying to go to sleep even in the daytime. I can forget all the bad feelings when I wake up.
Like many others, doing things that I like to do also helps me get rid of the stress. I like to go to cinemas, go shopping, read books or so on.

Hi David and everyone!!
Thank you for correcting my introduction the other day.
(By the way, how do you feel about the expression "Thanks a million."? I have come across this somewhere before.)
1)I'm doing nothing but work part-time for the travel around Europe in this summer. So I rarely hang out with my friends these days. This is my cause of stress.
2)The solution for this is to chat with my friends after a part-time job . It is really convenient because it takes only a few minutes. But now I realized...I'm a boy like a girl.
David, your point of view is sociological and really interesting to me. This is why I keep on reading this blog.
Now I'm going to travel around Europe this summer. So what is your favorite place in Europe?
Take care.

I see what you mean. I did not know that programme but I like watching those kinds of TV programmes. If my situation allows me to take a vacation, I will take a trip. But if not, I’ll just watch those things and imagine myself as the traveller in the programme;)
Hi noriko,
Hope your mother will get a new medicine and will be getting better soon.
Hi Fumie,

Thank you very much for your concern to my bad habit recently, and I would definitely try to make it ほどほどに・・・,well, I am also not very sure how to say it in English. Could I say, just straightly, 'do not drink too much'? By the way, do you often drink too?

Thank you! Of course I remember you, and nice to hear from you again!
Hi Amo,

Hi, David and everyone,
1) One of the most stressful things at the moment is family problem. I cannot explain to detail, but, it makes me feel really really down.
And a flood of information (mostly about negative things) coming from the media constantly makes me depressed sometimes.
2) I love listening to music so I do when I feel sad and depressed and sing along with it in my room. I do not care if I sing out of tunes or not but the most important thing is to release my anger, worry or sadness to get rid of them. Recently I borrowed some awesome CDs of 80's, which I'm not familiar with, but actually I found them just great!!!! I became a fun of 'simply red', 'heart' and 'journey'.
Hi, Fumie,
It was nice to hear your story about Korean trip with your mum. I've never been there, so I'd really love to someday near future.
Hi, noriko
Thanks! I don't belong anywhere at the moment, just do my part-time job, so I'm studying English by myself and trying to find good ways to learn, which suit for me. This blog is one of the best ones, you know!
Hi, Ken,
I'm now really interested in studying nursing and planning to go to college next year, so it was interesting to read your comment that showed the difficulties and your frustrations you were facing at work. There is much demand for care workers now and I'm sure it's going to be increased rapidly. I cannot imagine how tough and demanding the job is now but it's highly needed by so many people. It seems that you're exhausted!! By the way, I like '世界ふれあい街歩き' as well:)
Good night!

Hi ken,
I used to drink beer but now I do not drink it much.
Before the day off, I drink it with my family a little, but except that, I make it a rule to do not drink beer for health.
Once you get used to do not drink it you wouldn't need to do it.
I do not smoke and do not drink, I have been living for nothing.
I just want to improve my English skill.

I don' watch much of Japanese TV programs but I love travel ones. As you said, I feel like as if I am traveling myself in that place. Hi all,
1)My biggest cause of stress is when I could not express my feeling exactly in English.I felt frustrated when I didnt do this.In addition to this, people with surrounding me are talkative,so I couldn't say any words. It is also cause of stress .
2)My relaxation way is having a chat with my family, friends and boyfried in Japanese.I'm very relieved when I do this.
Have a nice day;)

Hi David and everyone,
Good morning! Wow, the blog is very lively, isn't it?
訂正;
>their husbands stay at home all the week→
→their husbands stay at home everyday
> I guess a glass of beer after that would be priceless.→I guess a glass of beer after that would be delicious.
Actually, I wanted to imply "一杯のビールは*格別においしい*と思います" and chose the word"priceless", but I thought it didn't sound fit here, and then changed it to "delicious." No other word sprang to me, but it sounds monotonous.
>Murun,
Glad to see your comment again.

>Taka,
As for"thanks a million", I thinks it equals to "thank you very much." You would also say "thanks a bunch, thanks a lot." Just in case.
>Rin,

Hi David and everyone,
It's really interesting for your mother's research about supersitition of umbrella. It's nice that "The umbrella is a universal symbol for protection from the storms of life."
I think it's one that's Europe! But maybe it's not popular, because, there you see, you also don't know, David?

Hi Anne, momo, Fumie, amo and everyone,
Sorry, there was some mistake about the showing time of the program 世界ふれあい街歩き in Kansai. It should be Wednesday night on NHK BS Hivision and Friday night (10:00PM) on NHK総合. We can also see the same program on rerun on some Saturday, which I am not quite sure.
I was very pleased to know that many of you like watching this program. This program is made in totally different style from many other ordinary travel programs. The camera is always shot at the same hight as our eyes, and that's the reason why we feel as if we are walking in the town ourselves. The relaxing kind of music のどかな音楽 also eases our mind. The reporter is asking not many complicated questions to passersby, but rather only simple questions, by which we feel as if we are asking questions to them ourselves, and they are replying to us. The reporter is going into very small back alleys which other program seldom shows. The program is also shot, sometimes, in small nameless towns in the world, and we would never go or even know the name of the town in our whole life without this program....
Hi Kazu,
Oh, you must be kidding to say that you have been living for nothing....haha...Well, thay say a bit of alcohol would rather be beneficial for the health. I can also say that if you drink a glass of red wine every night, you can prevent from becoming the dementia (Alzheimer).これ、ホントよ。

I'd like to answer this week's questions.
1) I feel stress when my work doesn't go well. I'm in this situation now. I work from 9am to 10pm everyday. I don't have enough time to do what I want to do. This is cause of stress.
2) Listening to music, watching movies and reading comics. Yes, I'm インドア派.
Hi Anne
Did you watch "Black Swan"? Did you enjoy it? There were many shocking scene. I feel hurt as if I was wounded!
Hi amo
I agree with you. Definitely, crowded train is cause of stress :-(
I always take earlier one to avoid it.
Good night.

Hi David and everyone,
It`s Murun. It`s been ages since I last posted here. It probably was in April. But I was checking the whole entery you posted over weeks and it all was very interesting to me. For example, Superstitions, Japanese cars and so on.
Anyway today`s topic is about stress. Well, I think there is no one who is not dealing with stress nowadays. We all have some stress more or less. For me, sometimes it seems like everyday is so similar. Because I am housewife and have kid and do same things everyday at my home. So recently I thought I have to balance between housework and my interest. I have to work for my family and I need some rest and I also have to do thing I like or go out with my friends sometimes. So I have to balance for these things correctly.
Thank you for reading my poor English.
