Skype

In the entry about technology that I did a couple of weeks ago, I said I thought that email would disappear in a few years. Actually, I'm not sure whether it will disappear altogether, but even now it is starting to decline. The reason for this is that more and more people are using social media like Facebook, Twitter, and Skype to keep in touch with their friends and family.

I don't like Facebook very much, and I am not on Twitter, but I absolutely love Skype, and I realized last week that this has become my primary means of communicating with quite a few of my friends.

Just in case some of you have not heard of it, Skype is a program that allows you to send messages, talk, and even do video chats with anyone else who also has it. You can use it with both Mac and Windows computers, but it works really well with a Mac because the camera, microphone, and speakers are all built-in, so all you have to do is look at your computer screen and talk. The best thing about it is that it is free, so I can talk to family and friends in other countries for as long as I want, anytime I want. I know some of you say that you are a bit scared of new technology, but Skype is so simple that even my mum can use it!

When you want to start a text chat with someone on Skype, you just click on their name in your list of contacts, type in your message, and press "enter" on your keyboard. The other person gets a sign on their screen to say that you have sent them a message, and they just type into the window and press "enter" to reply. Of course, there are other "chat" programs that can do this, but with Skype, you can then just click on a button to talk to the other person, or click on a different button to do a video chat if you want to. In other words, all the different forms of communication are covered in one program.

Another advantage of Skype chat is that you can just scroll up to see all your previous messages. I know you can set email to do that as well, but not everyone includes the message you sent when they reply, so I sometimes find that I have to go back and open earlier emails to remind myself of things like dates and times. You don't have to do that with Skype.

Last week, I found another amazing feature of Skype that I didn't know about: you can drag any file from your computer into the text window, click "enter," and it will be sent to the other person. It works for photos, videos, or any other kind of file. It's much easier than sending files by email, and there is no size limit. The other person gets a message saying "~ has sent you a file. Do you want to accept it?" If they click "accept," the file is sent.

Some smartphones can also run Skype, so I can call people's mobile phones from my computer, and it doesn't cost anything. This is really popular among iPhone users in Japan because Softbank allows the installation of Skype. Unfortunately, it is blocked by AU and docomo, so I can't use it on my phone. Another great thing about smartphones (and my lovely new iPad!) is that many of them have two cameras, one on the front, and one on the back. That means you can show the other person your face using the front camera, or you can show them whatever you are looking at by using the rear camera. I used my iPad last week to give my mum and dad a tour of my house.

Anyway, my questions this week are:

1) Do you communicate with people using Skype or other social media?
2) What are the advantages for you of using this system rather than email?

Look forward to reading your comments.

PS If you think "I haven't got Skype, so I don't know what he is talking about," go and get it now! It's free. Just search for "Skype" on Google or Yahoo.

Comments

Hi David,

I got a docomo's smartphone last week. I have a friend who got docomo's smartphone recently, so I said to him "I got smartphone, too!" He said "Why don't you use Skype on your phone? If you use it, you can make free calls to your friends who use Skype on their phones." Actually, I didn't know Skype, so I didn't know what to do to use it. He told me how to use it. Now, I use it when I call him. But I only know about it that it is free when I call someone who use it, so I haven't known Skype well enough yet.

Amica

Hi Amica,

Are you using Skype on a docomo phone? I thought you couldn't do that. Have they changed the rules?

Idon't know the rules, but docomo's smartphone can use Skype.

Thanks Amica. I just installed it on my phone. I didn't know that they had changed the rules. I wonder what will happen, though. If everyone uses Skype on their smartphones, there will be no need to pay the 通話料金 to the phone companies. Everyone will just get unlimited Internet, and then use Skype to call people. If the other person has Skype too, it will be free, but even if they don't, it is still quite cheap.

Hi David,

Sorry but I am a bit tired today, so I just answer to your questions tonight.
1) Yes, I use Skype. My cell phone is not a Smartphone, but I have an IPod touch so I installed Skype in it. It doesn’t have a camera so I can’t do video chats though.
2) I just started using Skype as a phone, so I haven’t used other functions yet. I still need to learn how to use it fully.

Good night and sweet dreams,
amo

Hi David and everyone!

This time’s topic is very interested in it.
I have set skype up since 9th Jun and I’m having fun of talking with another country people. I made some friends via Skype, it is good for me.
When I started Skype, I couldn’t believe that sound was very clear and there was no time rug. As if we are talking side by, the sound was very clear.
That is amazing technology.
So I addicted to talking with some foreign country people and also we exchange language each other.
At least we talk or chat a day. So my English skill will improve, I hope.
I also using face book, Twitter, Mixi, and so on.
I can keep up with what happening in the social net working.

As for your second question, I’d rather Skype more than e-mail.
I don’t need to use e-mail so far. Because when I get the massage, I can see it on my computer or iphone, so it is convenient for me.
I want to make the most of this opportunity to talk with foreign country people and making friends is so exiting.

If any of you interested in Skype and want to start it, don’t hesitate and start it. It will bring you to the amazing world!
My Skype ID is yattamon2011. Please let me know if you interested in talk with me via Skype. That’s cool!

See you!

Hi everyone,

Did you have a great weekend?
Today is the 4th of July, so I can see many people fly American flags in front of their houses.
I also enjoyed beautiful fireworks tonight!

Here are my answers about the topic.
1) Yes, I use Skype, Facebook, and Twitter.

I have been using Skype and Facebook for a long time.
I think they are great communication tools.
Let me share my story about them.
On March 11th, I was in Osaka. I was visiting my parents' house during spring break.
You probably know, many people lost contact because the phones were overload after the quake.

My husband tried to call me from the US, but he couldn't reach me. But we could talk through Skype.
Skype was OK and I left messages on my Facebook page saying we are safe and OK.
My relatives and friends who could open their computers could read my messages at once.

But, I wasn't a Twitter person, I decided to start Twitter because of this news.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/42068328#42068328
I think using Twitter this way is also great.

For me, I use Skype and Facebook with my family and my friends. There is no special reason, but they are all strangers on my Twitter page.

2) For me, my family, relatives and friends live in other countries. International phone calls are still expensive, but Skype is free if we both have an ID.

So, the advantages for me of using Skype are that not only can we talk without paying money, but we also can see each other face to face.
Also, as David mentioned, people can show their houses and neighbors to each other through the camera.

I hope email is not going to disappear because some of my family and friends use only email. I think some people just don't like Facebook, Skype, and so on.

Hi Fumie,
Oh, I didn't climb the mountains :-) I took the Pike's Peek train. Here is link to the train.
http://cograilway.co/Pikes%20Peak%20train%20videos-B.htm
My pet bottle was squeeze by the air pressure!
I could see five states at once from the top!

I have to hit the hay pretty soon. Please have a wonderful day!

Animal Farm

Hi Fumie,

I am sorry my spell was wrong. The spelling is "Pike's Peak."
Also, I don't know why, bit I couldn't open the Pike's Peak link. Sumimasen.....

Animal Farm

Hi David and everyone. I haven’t visited here for months since I was so busy, but this topic is so interesting for me, so let me write my answer to David’s questions:)

David – thank you for sharing the information about Skype! Recently I got docomo’s smartphone, so I just wanted to use Skype because my friend who has iphone recommended it to me. This blog is very very helpful!

1) I use mixi, twitter and facebook to communicate with my friends, especially friends living far away.
2) I was so surprised that I don’t need to pay any 通話料 to use Skype. My boyfriend lives in Tokyo (I live in Hyogo), so I want to call him via Skype as soon as he gets a smartphone!

You left out m after ".co".
There's no domain called "co".
It should be com as follows.
Not http://cograilway.co/Pikes%・・・・・・
but http://cograilway.com/Pikes%・・・・・・・

Hi David and everyone,

Skype.
Umm, this is not so easy topic as well.
Like me who is the person not to keep up a new technology :)

I’ve ever heard of Skype, of course.
Friend of mine uses this system and enjoys chatting with friends far from her.
But I didn’t know about it in detail.
Absolutely my pc hasn’t set it up.
I checked a website and read members’ comment first.

Here are my answers,
1) Do you communicate with people using Skype or other social media?
I don’t use Skype. When I communicate with someone, emailing, texting with phone, or pc are the tools still now.
I always use free mail system (like hotmail etc…), because I will be able to emailing anytime, at anywhere unless am not in the environment using pc. It is free and do not have to have own pc with me ( for example at over seas…)
2) What are the advantages for you of using this system rather than email?
I 'd like to know the answer!

I have some simply questions about Skype.
*. Why Skype is free?
*When you install Skype, does this file is huge? I mean, my pc sometimes doesn’t work because of storing much memories, files. The actual owner, my husband usually told me that not to store much memories or information. So I frequently delete memories.
How about security? Virus?

By the way how was your weekend everyone?
Animal Farm, thanks for letting us know your travel to the Rocky Mountain. I couldn’t imagine how huge it is, but enormous nature makes our mouth shut, right?
I got back to my parent’s house this weekend and knew a good news about my aunt.
She got married with the priest of temple around 30 yeas ago, and finally she became a mother and grand mother at one time.
They couldn’t have their own child but they adopted a man for their temple’s successor.
The man got married several years ago, had a baby son.
She looked really happy. I’m sure she will have a good relationship with her new family.
Speaking to Adoption, I don’t think this is a quite popular in Japan but in the US.
My aunt’s case was a bit rare though.
Since 3.11, thousand of children survived but lost their family.
This is not a matter for an adoption, but I know a lot of children lose their mother or father in many types of situation.
I was wondering if Japan would be a popular country to adopt.

Hi everyone!

I just heard on the news there were earthquakes in Wakayama. I hope everyone is OK.
Please stay safe and take care.
I think of you....

Animal Farm

Hi David,

This week's topic is tough for me. Because I'm way behind technology but that doesn't mean that I'm not interested in those things: social media. On the other hand, I'm very much interested in them and want to start doing them. David's and other members comments made me want to do them more. I didn't know that Skype has so many features and benefits. I thought we can only do video chat with Skype. I didn't know that we can also send messages and talk. And as Animal Farm said Skype is free and became useful when the earthquake happened. I think Skype will be definitely the next media to get in touch with people.
So why not start doing Skype? Even very easy and simple things are difficult for people like me. 他の人があたりまえにできることが、できなかったりするんです。基本の基本すら知らないからでしょうか。。。Besides there isn't anyone who is doing these things and teach me how to do it around me. I have very poor understanding about social media. I don't even know much about the differences between Skype, Facebook, Twitter and Mixi or Iphone, Ipad and Smartphone. Oh I'm like a dinosaur when it comes to technology. OK, enough mourning. I think it's a good chance to start doing Skype or at least I should try it!
My answers to your questions are,
(1) No, I don't.
(2) I learned advantages of Skype from everyone's comments.

Hi Animal Farm,

Thank you for introducing us the site of "Pike's Peak". Don' worry, I could see it's homepage and some pictures of the mountain. You know, if we know the key ward we can google it. It's magnificent! Rugged rocks, wild animals. Your pet bottle was squeezed by the air pressure, really!
I always enjoy reading your stories about the places you visit in the US. You shared us your trips so I come to know those places from your stories and it's sites.
Thank you.

Hi Kazu,

I saw your blog. Is that the picture of a man is you?

Fumie

Hi 2011年07月05日 15:48,
Thanks for telling me about that!

Hi Noriko,
Thanks for your message! haha: ) I like your "enormous nature makes our mouth shut."
Noriko, I think you are very humorous!

Yes, I've heard many people adopt children in the US.
Also, many children I have seen look happy.
I have no idea if Japan will be a popular country to adopt in.
They have different laws in each country about it.

I saw on the news that many Japanese people have contacted the 全国里親会 to adopt the children who lost their families because of the quake.
But the 全国里親会 is worried about the children's emotional problems from being move to new places.

I hope many children can get a good education, proper nutrition food, and a good environment soon.
Thanks for sharing your aunt's story! I am happy for her!

Hi Kazu,
I also visited your blog! What is "尿管結石七転八倒式英語喉(おもしろアプローチ)"?
I've never heard about "英語喉", did it work?

Hi Fumie,

I am glad you enjoyed my stories about the places!
I wish I could show you some photos of the Mt...
Thanks for your message!

Please have a fantafabulous day :D

Animal Farm

Hi David and everyone,

I don't think I'm familiar with technology that much, but anyway, I use social media like Facebook,Twitter and Skype. Just for the record, this never means that I fully utilize these media!
As for Skype, I just talk with my friends or do a text chat in Japanese, but I didn't know other programs, so there might be a lot of things to learn.
In my computer, all things like camera, microphone and speakers to use Skype were not built-in, so I bought those things and set them in. As David said, it is true that Skype is simple and even I can use it, however, it was veeery difficult and took me much time to set them...sigh...
As noriko said, I was also wondering why you don't need to pay money. Actually, there are other services in Skype and when you want more service, you need to pay some money. By the way, I read an article about Skype the other day, and it said that Microsoft will buy Skype. Does this mean that Microsoft builds Skype into all sorts of products?
Technology has been moving and developing day by day!
As for another noriko's question, I'm not sure, but the file doesn't become huge, and you don't need to worry about security as long as you keep in touch with your friends or family. It's just my understanding,though...

Here are my answers to the questions:

(1) Yes, I do. I started using Skype last spring to talk with my young friend living in Switzerland.

(2) One of the big advantages is,of course, "free."
Compared with e-mail, another advantage is that I feel it more casual. I sometimes leave messages instead of e-mailing. The other one is "real-time." Even though you don't talk, you can do a text chat; you can communicate with your friend or family on real-time directly. This is the one that e-mail can't do.

Hi Animal Farm,
Thanks for sharing the site and the story about "Pike's Peek." I felt as if I were there! Lucky you!

Hi noriko,
Your aunt's good news is really nice. As you said, and Animal Farm has told us, the number of the children who are adopted is quite few in Japan compared with that of the U.S.

It's hot,but not so humid around here.
What is the weather like around your area?

Bye for now,

PS,Animal Farm, I love the expression"a fantafabulous day." :)

Anne

Hi David and everyone,

It's been a while since I last wrote a comment. I can't believe it's already July, and my children will be on summer vacation soon! I haven't written anything in English for about a month, so I'm totally out of practice. I feel I'm starting to forget my English... Anyway, I hope you are all well.

Here are my answers to the questions.

1) I'm not on Facebook or Twitter, but I use Skype. I didn't know much about Skype a few years ago, but a friend of mine told me that it's very easy and I should try it, so I decided to give it a go. I started using Skype last autumn, but I haven't had any trouble with it so far. I installed Skype on my father's computer and my sister's one too.

2) As many of you know, Skype is a great tool for communication, and I also think the best thing about it is that it's free. I like video chats. I don't have to worry about phone bills, so I can talk with my friends for hours. It's easier for me to communicate in English on Skype than on the phone because I can see the other person's face. Facial expressions help me understand their English. When I hear new words or when I don't understand what they are saying, I can ask them to write what they said.
Skype must be very useful especially for people whose family members live in other countries and for people who are in long-distance love.(I found the expression "long-distance love(遠距離恋愛) in a dictionary. Does it make sense?) Hearing your beloved one's voice saying "I'm doing fine" on the phone is nice, but hearing it with his/her smile is much nicer. I wish I had had Skype when my father was working in the US.

Tomo

P.S. Anne - The weather is good here as well. As you said, it's not that humid. I washed all the curtains in my living room today. It feels nice:)

Hi Animal Farm,

I'm glad you like my expression :) I hope this structure was correct gramatically.
I like your expression "tunnel vision"as well!
I tried to make sentenses for learn, but any of examples that I came up with were all about my grand mother or aunt of my mum. LIke:
My grand mother told me that her eyesight became tunnel vision...
By the way,里親制度 is a good system I think.
I hope this system will work enough, every children will happy.

Hi Anne,

Thanks for your idea for Skype.
I found a mistake on my comment. But I relieved that you understand and gave me a message.
Okay,I don't have to worry about the size of file,do I?
Inconvenience on my pc may have another reason.
Should we buy another??Ha-ha !

Hi Kazu,

As Animal Farm and Fumie mentioned,I found out your blog as well.
I was surprised ! Because you're a bit older than me!(mid 40's aren't you?If I'm wrong,please forgive me. I'm 41 though).
I've thought you're in 20's because of your writing style :)
Oh you used to be in NOVA.
I too studied at NOVA and I got level 4 at that time.
I was a bit suspicious of the system to step-up the level, but I'm sure you were appropriate to be in level 4 or more.

noriko

Hi Animal Farm, Fumie and noriko, thanks all of you visiting my blog.
to Animal Farm
>>What is "尿管結石七転八倒式英語喉(おもしろアプローチ)"?
It might be strange for you, I know, but I believe this method.
If you interested in that, please check this.
http://
youtu.be/74xJbULwBH0
This is his basic method to improve your pronunciation.
It works a lot for me.

to Fumie
>> Is that the picture of a man is you?
Yes, that good looking man is me.;->haha

To noriko
>>I too studied at NOVA and I got level 4 at that time.
Actually, I'm in the level 4 now, and also in the plateau.
It is hard to improve, but thanks to the internet, especially Skype, I might be able to improve a lot.
I hope so.
I hope everyone can improve a lot.
See you!

Hi Anne,
I love reading your blog, thanks for your message always!
There is a pretty hot day today here and outside is 93.2°F (34.4°C ).
I am still not used to American system...feets, pounds, miles, and °F so on!
I am familiar with... cm, kg, km, and °C!

By the way, when I was driving in Denver, Colorado, I saw the speed limit was 75mph (約121km/hr)!
I've only seen 65mph on the highway before. Have you seen before 120km/hr on the highway?

Hi Tomo,
Welcome back to David field :)
I think good conversation is similar to good seeds.
Yes, I also can't believe that it's already July! oh,my...
I think it makes sense about "long-distance love"(遠距離恋愛), but I've often heard about "long distance relationship."

Hi Noriko,
Thanks for your message!

Hi Kazu,
Wow! I watched the link! What a wonderful voice he has!
But you know I was so surprised when I clicked your (おもしろアプローチ), because 開けた瞬間「あ’’’...う’’...ガ...」って、マジびっくらこきましたよ!
Thanks for the link and please take care!

Please have a relaxing day!

Animal Farm

Hi Animal Farm,
Thank you for visiting my blog.
I appreciate it.
>>I was so surprised when I clicked your (おもしろアプローチ), because 開けた瞬間「あ’’’...う’’...ガ...」って、マジびっくらこきましたよ!
Yes, I know what you mean, but for me that is useful for me to improve my English pronunciation.
It is amazingly method for me but also it is hard to keep that way.
If you interested in that way, you can try that way, haha;-)

Kazu

Hi Animal Farm,

Thanks for your message:) And thanks also for your help with my question about 遠距離恋愛. "Long distance relationship", I see.
By the way, measures like foot, pound, mile, inch, and °F are too difficult for me to use. If someone says "I'm 6 feet tall", I can't imagine how tall he/she is!

Tomo

Hi David and everyone,

It was raining around here, so I'm wondering if Orihime and Hikoboshi were able to meet. Maybe they have to wait one more chance, August 7th.

We are talking about Skype this week, right?
When I was doing a text chat on Skype with my friend yesterday, I got a message from a person whom I didn't know to be a friend. Well...I'm not so familiar with Skype that I was surprised and felt a bit scared. I've never got these messages so far, and I don't open my Skype ID, so I'm wondering why these things could happen. Maybe it's a kind of a spam. Of course, I deleted that message!
Have you got such messages from unknown people ?
As Kazu and Tomo said, speaking with someone in English on Skype sounds interesting, but I haven't had a chance yet, so I'm interested in it.

Hi Animal Farm,
Thanks for your compliment. I'm glad you liked my blog.
By the way, speaking of Colorado, it reminds me of a singer/songwriter,John Denver.
you can listen to his song with a beautiful scenery in Colorado.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRlwNIswn3U
Even though I hear" it's 93.2°F today", it's difficult to visualize how hot it is!

Hi Tomo,
Welcome back!

Bye for now,

Anne

Hi David and everyone,

I'm sorry, but I was too busy this week to read everyone's comment on this week's topic. Let me answer David's questions only.

1) Do you communicate with people using Skype or other social media?

Yes, I do, but I use them in a very limited way.

I am taking coaching for free by my old friend on how I could run my company better using Skype every Thursday night. Before using Skype, we used Softbank's cellphones, but we had to finish it before 9 p.m. But, now we don't have to worry about that. She sends me some files through Skype and also suggested me sharing each other's schedule charts on Skype, which makes discussing the schedule easier. Anyway, I found an advantage of using Skype because it's free as everyone said.

I use Facebook mainly to communicate with old friends in Singapore and a cousin in Vancouver and a niece in Sydney. We sometimes do chatting. Besides, that's a lot of fun to know what other people are interested in now and also to see various photos they share with. When I came back to Japan, I didn't have enough time to say good-bye to my friends, so I lost almost all the contacts. Facebook has let me find them again.

Twitter has brought me another fun. As some of you already know, you have to write your comment within 140 words on Twitter. It was quite difficult for me at first, however, such difficulties have been changing into fun. When you write Japanese traditional poems, there is also the limitation of words. Twitter seems like that, although you don’t have to add season words. 分詞構文は普段ほとんど使うことがありませんが、字数制限のあるTwitterでは便利なので、たまに使うこともあります。

2) What are the advantages for you of using this system rather than email?

There must be lots of advantages of using social media, however, I sometimes feel "メーリングリスト"(I don't know how to call this in English) is a very convenient system, where everybody in a temporary same group made for a certain purpose can read everyone's mail. If you send a mail, everybody can read it. I don't know much about the system of social media. Are there similar functions on social media to the メーリングリスト on email?

Finaly, please arrow me to share the website for my guesthouse. It is ready now. I would appreciate it if you drop by and give me some feedback (宿泊代をもっと安くとか) because it is still been developed. Thank you!

Sorry, I forgot to post the link.

Sorry again, the last line should've been

>> because it is still BEING developed.

訂正;
>Have you got such messages →Have you ever got such messages

Hi tsuneko,
Congratulations! You did it!
I liked the story of the Minasan guesthouse:)
By the way, I'm wondering if this part is typo or not;please 'arrow' me to share the website
I like the idea of 'arrow' not 'allow.'

See you soon,

Anne

Hi Anne,

Thank you very much for your time visiting the site and giving a warm message. Also, I really appreciate your pointing out my typo. "Arrow" is a sharp stick like (↑) and totally different from "allow."^^; I'm off work today, so I'm going out now. See you.

Hi tsuneko,

So that's what you are doing. Providing foreign visitors a place to accommodate and giving them opportunities to get to know with Japanese people and Japanese cultures. That's wonderful! One thing I'm not sure about is you wrote >Minasan is the shortcut of Minatogawa-cho, san-chome.
Can "shortcut" be used as the meaning of 言葉の省略形? In my dictionary shortcut only has meaning of 近道、手っ取り早い方法。Maybe "abbreviation" is a better word? But I'm not sure. I'm sorry.
Anyway, ビジネス、頑張ってください!

Hi Tomo,

I'm SO~ glad that you came back!
Looking forward to read your next comment.

Fumie

Hi Anne and Fumie,
Thanks for your messages:) I'm glad to be back, too!

Hi Tsuneko,
Did you build that website yourself? You are amazing! I checked all the pages there. I like your guesthouse very much. The white entrance door, walls, and balcony; the wooden doors and furniture; and the ducks in the bathroom, they are lovely! I think the accommodation costs are reasonable. They are especially cheap for long stay travelers.
Oh, by the way, the picture on the profile page is very nice;-)

As for the expression "shortcut", my understanding is the same as Fumie's. How about "short for ~"? For example; Tomo is short for Tomoyo.(←This is my first name as you know.)

Have a nice day, everyone!

Tomo

Hi Fumie,

Anyway, thank a lot!

Hi Tomo,

Karen. Youre right about the Clinton administrations hand the disasterous mortgage lending debacle. But dont be too quick to give W a pass. He claims he warned about such a practice. But he didnt do a whole lot to prevent it. Congress or not, he could have done much more to stop that failed policy. And as far as bailouts going to Obamas buddies; first it has to be said that these are Bushs buddies too. The whole practice was initiated in 1913 with the inseption of the Federal Reserve.
