My Summer Vacation

As I told you last week, I am leaving Japan tomorrow and heading back to Wales for the summer. I heard a BBC weather forecast the other day where they said the maximum temperature in Wales that day was 19 degrees! My plane leaves from Chubu International Airport at 9.20 tomorrow evening, and I arrive in Manchester on Wednesday afternoon.

Over the last few months, I have been following a pattern of introducing a new topic on Mondays, and then giving feedback on Fridays. I will start that again in September, but over the summer, I will just write short entries to let you know where I am and what I am doing. Of course, you should all feel free to send messages to each other as usual.

I haven't really decided what I'm going to do or where I'm going to go when I get back to Wales, but the first thing will be catching up with family and friends. My brother's wife, Di, is going to bring my niece and my nephew over to my parents' house on Thursday, so I'm looking forward to seeing how much they have grown since I last saw them.

Anyway, I hope you all have a great summer, and that you will keep the blog lively while I am on holiday.

Bye for now.

PS Amo, glad to hear that you got your pass case back!

Comments

I just read an interesting news story in a British newspaper about a topic that we discussed recently. It says:

"From today, you won't be able to get a driving license unless you answer yes or no to the question of whether you wish to be included on the Organ Donor Registry."

In other words, everyone has to decide whether they want to be a donor or not.

Hi David,

Have you finished packing your things? I hope you have a great time in a cool weather catching up with your family and friends. The temperature in Wales when you saw the weather forecast was 19 degrees!? That doesn't sound like the summer!
Looking forward to hearing from you from time to time.
By the way, England seems to move forward concerning organ donation. I happened to see a commercial of AC yesterday encouraging people to show their will whether they want to be a donor or not, and the way to do it.

Have a happy flight!

Hi tsuneko,
Yes,it is from Washington D.C where Appho lives. I bet he visited there. This time 83 masterworks are exhibited and they are rarely included in traveling exhibitions in such large numbers. You can see them from Sep13 at Kyoto Municiapal Museum of Art. Actually, I visited there when I went to NY last year.

Bye for now,

Anne

Hi David,

19 degrees?! The maximum temperture?? You might want to take some warm clothes with you.
Have a lovely time with your family, and enjoy your cool summer!

Tomo

PS tsuneko, thanks for your message. I'm enjoying writing comments with a “touch pen” ;-)

Hi David,

Have a wonderful reunion on Thursday. No plans for what to do or where to go sounds very nice. Have a lot of fun during your 1-month holiday. Look forward to your short entries. Bye!

Hi Anne,

Thank you for the information. I'll be sure to go to the one in Kyoto.

Hi Tomo,

I see. I didn't think of "touch pen." That sure is easier than typing on cell phones.

Good night, everyone.

Hi David,

You know, I really like this pattern. You introduce a topic on Mondays and give us some feedback on Fridays, so I will be going to miss your feedback. But of course, I would like you to enjoy your vacation, so I can wait until then:) Speaking of the weather in Wales, it can’t be summer but winter to me(lol) but I am pretty sure that it will be heaven to you. Enjoy a nice and cool weather there, and hope you will have a lot of fun with your family and your friends.

Good night and sweet dreams,

Ps. Thanks for your words, Tomo and David.

Hi David,

Have a lot of fun time in Wales! The temparature of Wales is much cooler than that of Japan. That's nice. We don't suffer from relentless heat this summer yet. I'm really looking forward to reading your reports of your stay in Wales. Wales is one of the places where I want to visit someday.

I think the new system of UK: people can't get driver's licenses unless they show their will to be organ donors or not.
Bon voyage.

Hi David,

Are you going to leave soon? or by the time you read our messages, you will be in Wales?
Please have a great and relaxing time.
Thank you always for giving us feedback.
I'm looking forward to reading your UK stories!

Hi Noriko,

Thanks for saying so : )
I hope my English is colorful on my college papers too!
By the way, how was the dentist?
When I was in Japan, I liked to go to the dentist.
It feels fresh after I get my teeth cleaned!
You know, in the US, it's very expensive to go to the dentist!
Keeping and having good teeth saves money : D

By the way, when the huge earthquake hit Kobe, I was a high-school student and lived in Osaka.
I felt the same powerful earthquake.
We had to move to a stronger house after that...

Hi Tomo,

Wow, I am glad you could write messages through your son's DS!

Hi Tsuneko,

Thanks for your many videos.
I could see all of them from your Twitter!
Are they working ことばの広場3丁目?Who is playing the piano? Was it you in video number 6?
By they way, I also like Billy Joel!
I like to listen to "New Your State of Mind" with a New York scene especially Manhattan.
When you have a chance to visit the US, I highly suggest Manhattan! It is so beautiful.
Someday, I want to live in NYC!

Hi Amo,

Lucky you!

Hi everyone!

How are you today?
I was almost a boiled octopus
The temperature was almost 34℃!
By the way, Americans don't use this expression (boiled octopus).

Please have a great day and see you soon!

Animal Farm

I also saw the news about the UK's new drivers license organ donor law.
If people are sick, people choosing no saves doctors time.

Hi Animal farm and all,
I also read articles about the news, and among them, the word "nudge" was new to me.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-14341553

Anne

Hi David,

Are you excited to heading back to your home town? Have some rest and recharge energy for coming our next semester :)
No, it's joking! Just enjoy yourself in your vacation

Anyway, like amo mentioned, I like the pattern that introdusing new topic on Monday, and get a feedback on Friday. It gives me a good chance to think in English, find new expressions.

Hi Animal Farm,

Thanks for asking me :)
I finished my check up! And next session would be in 4 month.

You lived in Osaka when the big earthquake happened. You had to move to the stronger house?
Sorry to hear that.
That's what tsuneko's poem touched you.

noriko

Hi David and everyone,

David's message to Amo made me realize that I made mistakes in my comment on the last entry. I couldn't think of the expression “get something back” when I wrote “Happy for you that the things you lost are back”. I think it could be “Happy for you that you got all/everything you had lost back”, but this is complicated, so I'd like to change it to “Happy for you that you got your pass case back.” Also, I should have written “she(my niece) got it back the next day.”

As for the news David mentioned, I think it's a very good idea, and it should be adopted in Japan as well. As someone mentioned before, new driver's licenses in Japan can be donor cards. I have to renew my driver's license this year, so I'm going to check the box of ~I want to be a donor~ on the back. If my new license still doesn't have a box for organ donation, I'm going to put a sticker on the back so that it can be a donor card. My husband's company gave their employees(and their family members) stickes for organ donation so that their driver's licenses or health insurance cards can be donor cards. I think you can get this sticker from

Hi Animal Farm,
I'm also glad that I found an easier way to write comments here:)

Hi Anne,
Thanks for letting us know the link. I tried to read the article, but my DS couldn't show the site because it's too large. I'll read it when my computer is back.

See you soon,

Tomo

Animal Farm

Hi Anne and everyone!

Thanks for the link, Anne!
After reading the news, I thought that the tendency is the same as in Japan.

Do you remember when we talk with Dr.KMI and he said,
"A 2006 survey by the Cabinet Office found that the rate of people in favor of donation was 42%. However the rate of people who actually carry a donor card was only 1.6%."

In England, the news article says, "Less than a third of people are signed up to be organ donors - despite research suggesting that nine in 10 would he happy to be one."
I think many people want to be organ donors and help others, but if it's optional, people don't help as much as they can.

So, I think the "nudge' is a great idea to push people to make a decision about something.

Also, as the article says, "When a similar scheme was introduced in the US state of Illinois, donor registration jumped from 38% to 60%."
This means a lot of people can continue to live because of the system.

The comments about the article also were very interesting.
But I didn't like one comment.
S/he said, S/he doesn't want to be an organ donor because S/he thinks her or his organs may help drug addicted people.
I believe recipients don't use drugs or smoke.
Can you imagine people who are eager for a transplant using drugs?

By the way, today is much cooler and I am happy : )
Please have a great day at work!

Please have a lovely day! See ya : )

Hi David,
Thank you for your feedback, which is very useful for me to improve my English.
Wales is the place where my ex Japanese student was born. Have a nice trip!!

Hi Amica,
Without airconditioners and electric fans were very tough for me, but the 電気関係の工事 was over,
外溝工事はまだ残っていますが・・・ I was waving うちわ、which reminds me 昔の人の生活。

Hi noriko,
Before I had the same troubles, but after tsuneko taught me the way, I had no problem..( I mean not rejected)

Hi amo,
I can understand your feeling well when you lost them, but よかったですね。

Hi tsuneko,
How can I access to "You Tube" and "Twitter"?
If you don't mind, would you write me the way how to access them?

I'm in Abu Dhabi airport at the moment. It's seven thirty in the morning here. I flew three hours from Nagoya to Beijing, had a two-hour stopover there where we had to just wait on the plane, and now I have to wait another four hours for the connecting flight to Manchester. That flight will take another seven hours, so it's going to take me around twenty-five hours altogether to get home.

Hi David,

It's nice to see your report from Abu Dhabi. It seems it's going to be a long flight. Take care of yourself not to get any blood clots.

Hi Animal Farm,

You are always making me happy. As for my posing like that, I meant to send all of my power to anyone who gets a bit down.

Hi Carrie,

Thanks for asking me. Just click on my name "tsuneko", and you will get to one of YouTube. This will be deleted soon by me because of copyright, so I would be very happy if you will kindly have a look. As for Twitter, I'll let you know later, or maybe tomorrow. See you.

Carrie, I'm terribly sorry. The above one will bring you to another website. By the way, you can see Twitter conversation on the left side of the page there.

I'm back at my parents' house in Wales. It's almost nine thirty in the evening, and it's still light outside. The temperature in our back garden is about 15 degrees :-)

Hi David,

It was a long flight, wasn't it!? Anyway, glad to hear you got back safely. 15 degrees? It sounds like autumn in Japan!

Hi David,

I am glad you got your parent's home safely!
Your parents might be excited with you : )
Please sleep tight and release your long flight tiredness.

WOW! 15 degrees !? I really wanted you to put me in your suitcase! I am so hot.... : c

Animal Farm

Hi David,

Glad to hear you got there safely:)
Enjoy the lovely weather and daylight saving time!

Look forward to reading your next post.

Tomo

Hi David,

I'm glad to hear that you arrived at your parent's house safely! You must be tired after a long flight.
> It's almost nine thirty in the evening, and it's still light outside. The temperature in our back garden is about 15 degrees :-)
Wow, that's marvelous. Please enjoy your stay to the fullest. Looking forward to hearing your story!

Fumie

Hi David,

Glad to know that you got back in one piece;)
And have a lot of fun;)
amo

Hi David,

Did you have a good sleep? I am jealous of you for being in such a cool place this summer, too. Look forward to the next post from Wales.

Hi Carrie,

Thanks for your message ^^

Although David told us the reasons why tend to rejected messages or not to access, I'm going to try the way you suggested, carefully.

Hi David,

You got back to your parents' house safely,it's sounds great.
Have a good sleep and enjoy your reunion ^^

I scolded my son strongly ;(
He hit his friend by his toy train which made of hard, and hit many times by some materials ;d
Hah~~(涙)

noriko

Hi Animal Farm and everyone,

Yes, I do remember what Dr.KMI said.
I agree with you; by introducing this system, the rate of organ donation will surely rise.
I was surprised there were a lot of comments concerning this article,218 comment!
It was interesting to read each comment and is also helpful to learn new expressions.
I don't like the comment you mentioned, either. I found another one that I thought it interesting.

"I find it difficult to understand the sheer selfishness of people who would refuse to donate their organs but would willingly take one if they were in that position (and I know 2 such people!) I am neither a drug addict, alcoholic, overweight or a 'useless' member of society as suggested by 'piggyback', just a hardworking mum who would like a kidney in order to live to see her children grow up!" It's sarcastic, isn't it?

Hi David,

Did you have a good sleep?
I assume you'll be surprised and glad to know how children grow up in a year. I bet you have a lovely time with Matilda and Ollie! Just for the record ,for the members who don't know, they are David's niece and nephew.

Cicadas are buzzing outside.
It is supposed to be another hot day. A typhoon is approaching to Okinawa, though.

See you soon,

Anne

I just went out for a drink with one of my old school buddies, Richard. We went to a pub in the next village called The White Horse. Actually, if you Google "The White Horse Cilcain," you will probably find pictures of it. Anyway, it was really nice to be back in a Welsh village pub again. I just got home now, and the outside temperature is 11 degrees - it's lovely! I hope it is not too hot in Japan.

Hi David,

I’m pleased to know that you are having fun there. It’s always nice to reunion with old friends, isn’t it? I googled the village that you mentioned and saw some pictures of it. It seems very nice place, and I will put it top of my list of places to visit;)
11 degrees?? My PC says that it’s 32 degrees in Tokyo!! It’s going to be scorching for this weekend.

amo

Hi David and everyone,

When I was googling the pub this morning and came across an article: Prince Charles and Camilla visited the pub this May because Camilla's sister lives nearby if I remember correctly. They had some local beer, too. It seems the pub is very famous.

Wow, the above sentence was weird. It should be...

When I was googling the pub this morning, I came across~.

Good night.

Hi David,

Glad to hear that you had a wonderful time with your friend at a pub! The atmosphere of the pub is very nice. I've never been to any pub even in Japan. I hope I can visit one.
11degrees! The highest temparature of where we live is around 33degrees for these couple of days.
So it's so hot but less severe than that of last year's.
Are you going to visit some places: mountains, lake, places with nice views, this time?
Looking forward to another report!

Fumie

Hi David,

You seem to have had a great time with your friend, and I'm happy for you.
I also googled the pub and it looks very nice. What a shame I didn't experience the pub when I visited England! I saw a photo of the inn and it looks lovely! It must be relaxing to stay there and just to walk around.

tsuneko, thanks for reminding me of the story.

I found an interesting article ,and according to the article, after Prince William's marriage, a lot more tourists are interested in visiting North Wales, especially Caernarfon Castle. He is supposed to be the next "Prince of Wales."
If you are interested in it, have a look at it:
(Welsh castles 'more popular than Buckingham Palace' from guardian.co.uk)

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/jan/13/welsh-castles-top-tourist-poll

Enjoy the hot summer,everyone!

Anne

Hi David, Anne and everyone!

David, thanks for sharing with us your stories in Wales!
I also saw the website about "The White Horse Cilcain."
Wow, the building and the pathway are so beautiful.
In the picture of "Summer at the White Horse" a woman is riding a horse!
You know, I am really a city girl, so when I see horses, I am excited!
David, did you ride a horse when you went the pub?
Are there any traffic lights? Then if you would ride a horse, you might have to wait with the horse during the red signal?

By the way, the pub opened in 1977 which is my birth year : )
The master(or the bar person) seems like a nice man!
I really want to visit there someday... but I am not familiar with pubs, so I may have to order lunch meals instead of drinks :D

Thanks for the website, Anne!
It was not only good reading practice but also I can know about the very old history of the beautiful Welsh castles! How popular they are!

Did you all have a great weekend? I hope so!
See ya : )

Hi David and everyone,

I found two comments on the former entry,"Skype(Feedback) July 8th." Let me show their comments here.
David, one of them is from GITGB , and I assume you know him or her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
【Hi David,
The Google plus thing is a cool idea, but do you really think it will be a facebook challenger? Even with all of the money and influence of Google, do you think that they will be successful with getting people to switch to it, myspace style? I agree about the Skype on mobile phones thing, I have mine on the iPhone and love it to keep touch with inlaws when we're on the road or something...】--by DED July 14th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

【Hi David,
(as promised...it's a bit too late to respond this topic though)

Very interesting topic. Thanks a lot for sharing this. And I'm so happy to hear that you found the new function which you can exchange files on Skype.

Answers to your questions,
1) Do you communicate with people using Skype or other social media?

Absolutely YES. I just can't live without my computer and mobile! I mainly use Skype and Facebook. I have a Twitter account but that is only for getting some information from my "Following" people and groups such as event announcements and useful ELT tips etc. Also, I sometimes check train time schedule change/delay information, too especially because of typhoons (like yesterday) and earthquakes. It's so amazing that many people "tweet" about things in a second!

2) What are the advantages for you of using this system rather than email?

Firstly, I think I can communicate with people especially who live in foreign countries or can't meet so often more easily and readily rather than email. Speaking of Skype, I can "chat" with friends as if we are actually talking in person, and if we use web-cam and headset, I can actually talk with them as much as we want without thinking about how much it costs; it's free! (well, I should think about the time though...)

Another advantage is that I can use both Skype and Facebook for academic and business purposes. I can attend some meetings/conferences on Skype and also can create my own "Event" and "Invite" people on Facebook. They make things neater and more organised. There are so many functions and techniques which attract and help people communicate / connect people better.

As an English language learner, practising and experimenting English with this system is also personally very valuable and useful for learning. Since I unfortunately don't have enough opportunities to use English here in Japan, this helps me a lot.

Anyway I'm so addicted to using this system! I'll try Google + next.

Hi DED and GITGB,
It's a bit late to say, but nice to have you with us.

Anne

Hi DED and GITGB,

It's nice to have you with us. I'm looking forward to talking about something with you.

Hi Anne,

Thanks for finding those comments in the former entry and also letting us know about the castle. Caernarfon Castle is really beautiful. It looks like standing in water. I'll read the aritcle tomorrow.

Hi David,

When you drink at pubs there, what kind of food do you (both in general and personally) usually order besides drinks?

Good night, everyone.

Hi Anne,

Thanks for posting those comments. I don't think I know either of those people, though.

Hi DED and GITGB, thanks for your comments. I'm glad you found the topic interesting. It will be interesting to see what effect Google Plus will have on the social media world.

Hi everyone who Googled The White Horse. It really is a very nice pub. Actually, though, it is not in the village where my parents live. Our local is called "The Cross Foxes." ("Local" is used as a noun to mean "the pub I usually go to.") Most villages in Wales have a pub, a school, and a church, but many of them do not have shops, and there are no buses or trains, so you have to have a car to drive to the nearest town. I think most Japanese people would be surprised at how rural Welsh villages are. The only think I can see from my bedroom window at the moment is a field with cows in it! Horses are really common, too. You often see people riding them around my village. Unfortunately, I am allergic to horses, so I never ride them myself.

Hi Tsuneko,

I don't usually eat at pubs, but you can get lots of different kinds of food. Many of them are just like restaurants.

I hope you are all keeping well and not suffering too much in the heat. I went to watch a motocross race today, and it was so cold, I had to wear a fleece and a jacket!

I'll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Appreciating the hard work you put into your blog and in depth information you provide. It's nice to come across a blog every once in a while that isn't the same unwanted rehashed material. Excellent read! I've bookmarked your site and I'm adding your RSS feeds to my Google account.
