Bad Manners (Feedback)

As I'm sure most of you know, this week was a very sad one for Apple fans (like me) all over the world. The death of Steve Jobs was a real tragedy. When I mentioned it to some of my students, though, I was surprised to find out that a lot of them didn't even know who he was. They couldn't believe it when I told them that he was not only the man who created Apple, but also the man who created Pixar Studios. Anyway, I am going to do an entry about him next week, so I won't say any more about that today.

Of course, there was also great news for Apple fans in Japan this week when AU confirmed that they will be selling the new iPhone.

I had heard that you could reserve an AU iPhone from tomorrow, so I went to the AU shop this morning to ask about it. Unfortunately, the staff had no information at all about the iPhone, but they said that reservations were supposed to start today at 4, not tomorrow as I had heard. (They were getting all their information by constantly checking the company's home page!) Of course, I went back at 5 to make my reservation, and I was surprised to find that 11 people had got there ahead of me! There are two AU shops in Seto, and after only one hour, one of them had 12 reservations for iPhones (including mine). I'm sure that will rise a lot tomorrow, because many people would have been in work today. Can you imagine if that pattern is repeated all over the country? I wonder how many they will sell in total.

Anyway, thanks for your comments on this week's topic. Here is some feedback for you...

Having said that, rude behaviour is just rude.
(Does everyone know the phrase "having said that"? It's very useful, so learn it if you don't know it.)

I think your cases that you’ve seen were annoying for me as well.

(Hi Karashi, nice to have you with us. Please feel free to comment in Japanese. It's good reading practice for me!)

I got on a bus for the suburb of Cairns and told the driver the name that I wanted to get off at. (Is the last word 'at' necessary?)
(Yes, the "at" is necessary. You also need to change "I told the driver the name of the stop I wanted to get off at.")

Since then, I never forget to add 'please' to something to request.
(Since then, I never forget to add 'please' when I make a request.) [Nice story :-)]

Okay, that's it for now. This weekend is the F1 race at Suzuka, and if nothing horrible goes wrong, Sebastian Vettel will be crowned world champion. I wanted to go, but I'm afraid it's too expensive for me.

Hope you all have a great weekend. See you again on Monday.

David

PS If you search for "iPhone 4S" on YouTube, you can see a video showing the features of the new iPhone. I can' wait to get mine!

Hi David and everyone,

The death of Steve Jobs was very sad and shocking news. I just say "RIP Steve Jobs" now because you are going to do new entry next week. BTW, I learned the expression"RIP ~" Thanks ash!

I got back from Canada Thursday night. The weather was not so good and it was colder than I had expected, but I had a great time there: Niagara Falls was magnificent and powerful. Quebec city was very nice to hang around, and I heard a lot of musicians playing instruments on the street here and there. Notre-Dame Basilica interior in Montreal was amazingly beautiful! I've seen it on the book or on the web many times, but I was happy with just sitting on the chair and looking around the interior.
The magnificence of Columbia Ice field was fascinating and thecolor of glacier was pale blue and very beautiful. Lastly, I enjoyed appreciating the changing of colors of leaves(黄葉).

As for this week's topic, coincidentally I was thinking about this while I was in Canada. This time, I joined a tour and there were 37 members in all. I shared the table when I had lunch or dinner. Every time we had dinner, we were asked which one we would like to have "tea or coffee" from the the staff. Most of them just said,"コーヒー(not coffee)" without 'please.' Their attitudes were never rude, having said that, I was wondering how their words sound to native English speakers. I was also wondering if this was just the matter of words or not. If non native Japanese speakers came to Japan, and their Japanese were to be very basic, and they said "こーひー" instead of "コーヒーください", I don't think the staff feels bad. He/she would not think they were rude. As Jazmin said, is the point the matter of the attitude?
Anyway, the word"please" is very basic and convenient, so Japanese people should learn to use it before going on a trip.

旅行の間中この「コーヒー」と言う言葉の使い方が、ずっと気になっていました。

By the way, just for the record, "こーら”is the completely Japanese English:)

Hi amo,
I hope you are feeling better now. Take care!

Hi karashi,

Nice to have you with us. Looking forward to your next comment.

The weather is supposed to be fine this weekend, and I bet millions of people enjoy the F1 race at Suzuka and on TV.

Have a lovely weekend,everyone!

Anne

Hi David,

Thank you for your feed back.
Were you in line to get iphone4 yeaterday?
There were loooong line in front of some AU shops and sofobank shops in Tokyo.

I heard from today's morning news that miserable bus accident in Seto yesterday.
Do you use the rode?

Hi Anne,

I'm glad you had a great time in Canada.
I'd like to go Canada againe!
I'm very interested in your stoy of coffee and coke!

Hi everyone,

Do you enjoy long weekend?
Today's weather report says it's a beautiful weather all of Japan!
Have a nice weekend!
(I wrote these commens in my office .... Poor me!!!)

Green

Hi everyone,

It's lunch time!
I went to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government office for work yeaterday.
(I sometimes go there for work.)
I saw many turists from foreign countries there.
It's very glad for Japan and Japanese especially this year.
But Yen is so strong these days as you know.

Green

Hi David,

Thank you for the feedback.
Long time no see you.
(Long time no see.)
I didn't know that it's wrong to put you after see.
I'm so suprised and feel sad to know that Steve jobs passed away. May he rest in peace!

Hi Anne,

I'm glad to hear that you had lots of good time in Canada. I googled places you mentioned and saw pictures and videos of them. They are very beautiful even on pictures. It must be more beautiful when you see them on your eyes.

Hi Green,

Oh, you had to work yesterday, on such a lovely day. Poor you! On warm, beautiful days make me want to stop working and go outside. It's better to work on cloudy days.

Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

Fumie

Hi David and everyone,

I appreciate you giving corrections and feedback on our comments and answer to my question. I'll rewrite them for myself.

> I got on a bus for the surburb of Cairns and I told the bus driver the name of the stop I wanted to get off at.

> Since then, I never forget to add 'please' when I make a request.

Hi Anne,

Welcome back! Glad to know you had a wonderful time in various places in Canada. If I were there, I would also like just to sit on the chair in Nortre-Dame Basilica and look around the interior. Lucky you!

What's the weather like today where you are? It must be fantastic. Have a lot of fun, everybody!!

I read a really nice piece of advice today that I have never heard before:

Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.

Hi David and everyone,

Thank you for sharing the advice: "Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened." Yes, it will work on especially when you have a broken heart.

By the way, I just came across a post from "fuijawa" (or "haruka") in the previous entry, so I'll put it here.

Hi juijawa,

Nice to have you with us. I just happened to read your comment. It was interesting. Actually, after David posts a new entry, we automatically move on the new one even though we make a comment on the previous topic because David doesn't read old entries. I heard it from the oldest relular member, Tomo. (By the way, how have you been, Tomo?) For this reason, let me put your comment here.

* * * * *

I think the first case is common in Japan. Most Japanese just tell the name of the food and they add 'please' regarding to a situation, atmosphere, status of the shop, and feeling of that time. But hearing your opinion ,I realize that just adding 'please' makes sales person happy.Next time I order ,I'll do that way.
On the other hand ,second case is obviously rude in Japan too.Such a behavior is out of question.

Hi David and everyone!
It's my first time to comment here.I'm afraid that there will be a lot of mistake in my sentences.
Anyway how do you do? I'm yuki and 20 years old.Although Im a university student in Japan, I've been in Sydney for studying English for 4 month. So Ive been taking one year leave for that. I want to learn English as much as I can. That's why I decided comment here.
I m talking about Steve Jobs a little.I don't know actually about him. As David said I am one of them who only know him as a founder of apple.
This is about AU iPhone. It's great news for AU user. But I didnt know that AU would have sold new iPhone. I seldom see the news about Japanese here. It's difficult for me to get a lot of about and detail in that as long as I dont try to see that using Internet. Because I'm busy and lazy. But I'll try as much as possible.
I think my comment isn't connected.
Anyway nice to meet(?) you!

Hi David,
Thank you for your feedback and sharing nice advice. When I read it as soon as I was impressed by the phrase. Because as I am depressed by the small matter sometimes and I allways worry about it on myself. So if I would get feeling bad that it will make me feeling better soon. I have to learn it by heart from now.

Hi Anne,
Well came back to Japan. You had a nice trip in Canada didn't you? You are lucky!!! Anyway my granddaughter is going to Canada for 8 days as a school trip tomorrow. I hope she could enjoy same as you.

Hi everyone enjoy nice weather!!!

I think the quate applies to the sad news about Steve Jobs.
We should not cry because he passed away. We should be glad he WAS there in our world.

Hi Yuki,

Nice to meet you! Please write your university life in Sydney when you have time.

Hi David and everyone,

This week's topic makes me think. Not many people say thank you when a waiter or a waitress bring us food or to a cashier in Japan. There is this idea of お客様は神様ですin Japan. Even so, I think we should at least say thank you to people when we get services. I make it a rule to say thank you at restaurants, cash registers or when I get off a bus like Tsuneko does. I also say thank you to my son when he get the phone and bring it to me.

Bye for now.

Fumie

I've had a bit of a crazy day today. I'll do the new entry tomorrow.
Bye for now.

Hi David and everyone,

How was your weekend? The weather was fine, and I hope you had a great weekend.
I read entries and comments that I hadn't read yet this weekend.
David, I haven't said thank you for your feedback(not pl!) yet.
>"my behind" means 私のお尻!----I've never meant to joke, and just I didn't know this meaning!
>Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened---I really liked it! Thank you for sharing.

Hi noriko,
Very belated to "Happy Birthday!"
BTW, when I was 39 or 40, I had no idea of telling a lie about my age!

Hi tsuneko,
Thanks for letting us know fuijawa's comment.
Yeah,Tomo,how have you been?

Hi Yuki,
Nice to have you with us. How was your stay in Australia? Looking forward to your next comment.

Hi no-name-san.
I'm guessing your name(のど元まで名前が出掛かっているのですが。。。)、anyway, is your granddaughter a high school student? Hope she is having great days in Canada.
Actually, I saw about 40 elementary school children from China when I arrived at Toronto. I was surprised to see them because even elementary school children fly to a foreign country.

David,looking forward to new entry!

See you soon,

Anne

Hi David,

I tried to post here last night but connecting was so slowly ... then I gave it up.
Anyway, thank you for your correction and sharing the nice phrase.
Who did it tell you?

Hi fuijawa,yuki,

Nice to have you with us ^^
How is your stay in Sydney, yuki? Enjoy and let us know more about your school life.

Hi tsuneko,

Thank you for finding out old entry's comment.
As you said, we(I) always move to the next topic and do not check old one, so it sometimes lose chances to find good opinions.

Hi Anne,

Thank you for your message ^^
I read your report on your trip. Sound fantastic!

I had a bit of busy weekend.
We took my son to the huge scale of park.
He played like a puppy^^
And we've been to the college festival.
It was enjoyable.

noriko

Hi David,

Thankyou for the feedback. It's a time-consuming job, isn't it? I really appreciate it.

I’m impressed, I must say. Actually not often do I encounter a weblog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me let you know, you will have hit the nail on the head. Your concept is outstanding; the issue is something that not enough individuals are speaking intelligently about. I am very blissful that I stumbled across this in my search for something regarding this.

What a fun pattern! It’s great to hear from you and see what you’ve sent up to. All of the projects look great! You make it so simple to this. Thanks
