Going Back Home: The Good and the Bad (Feedback)

Thanks for all your comments. The topic of opening doors is a really interesting one. I think it was Ash who said that Japanese people are very polite to those they have a connection with, but that they are often rude to people outside their circle. I have noticed that as well. Anyway, I'm glad to hear that so many of you are teaching your children always to look behind them when they go through a door.

It's been a while since I did any feedback on your comments, so I will have to get back into it slowly. I don't think I will be able to do it as quickly as I used to! Anyway, here goes...

♪Happy Birthday,Fumie♪
I wish you good health and happiness in life
today and always!
(Nice comment. By the way, did I say happy birthday to Fumie? If not, then a very belated happy birthday to you!)

By the way,I usually check my behind, haha!
(I'm not sure whether this was meant as a joke or not, but just in case other people don't know, "my behind" means 私のお尻! The correct version would be "check behind me.")

I was very busy because I change my job,so I didn't watch this blog.
(I changed jobs, so I haven't been checking this blog.) [Hi Nao, nice to have you back with us.]

Incidentally, I always look behind me to see if someone is coming so that I can hold the door.
(Nice use of "incidentally.")

Long time no see. I have had another busy days.
(I've been busy again recently.) [Hi trmr. How are things? I hope married life is treating you well!]

I was thinking of writing a comment last night, but I couldn't connect the Internet,
("I couldn't connect to the Internet" or "I couldn't get online.")

I thought I can't keep working at the last company.
(I decided that I couldn't keep working at my last company.)

IMHO, it's a myth that Japan is one of the most polite countries.
(Nice comment, but does everyone understand IMHO? It means "in my humble opinion.")

trmr, you are going to UK. Lucky you! Is it a business trip?
(Nice use of "lucky you.")

Long time no see! I'm going to appear in an opera next month, and I have to go to do the rehearsal every weekend, so I'm very busy.
(Hi Amica - nice to hear from you again, and congratulations on this perfect sentence.)

In UK, when people caught my eyes, they smiled at me! In Japan, we just look away when we happen to catch someone's eyes.
(Very true! And a very nice sentence!)

I'm Green.
I'm writing my comment for the first time in a long time.
Do you remember me?
(Hi Green, nice to have you back with us.)

I'm going to be away from here for a week, so I can't say thank you for your feedback this weekend. I'd like to read them when I get back to Nagoya.
(Have a good trip! BTW, "feedback" is uncountable, so it's "I'd like to read it when I get back.")

You are going to a honeymoon, aren't you?
(You are going on your honeymoon, aren't you?)

Thank you so much for the birthday messages! It's a great feeling that being congraturated by you even though I got 1 year older. :-D
(I heard a funny joke the other day: the longest period in a woman's life is the five years between her 39th and 40th birthdays.
Do you get it?)

So I felt something with the same as David.
(I noticed some of the same things as David.)

I always try to check my behind when I go through a door and tell my daughter to try it.
(I hope you are not telling your daughter to check your behind :-)

I'd like to add Washlet to Japanese terrific things.
(I'd like add washlet to the list of terrific Japanese things.) [BTW, what is a washlet?]

I'm happy to hear Koichi's story from him.
(I enjoy hearing stories about Koichi from him.)

Please tell me about Koichi's childfood that you heard from your new co-worker!
(Please tell me what your friend told you about Koichi.)

When I've been to States, I was surprised at being addressed by shop attendants like friends. I liked the way.
(I liked that familiarity.)

Thank you for Koichi's information.
(Thank you for the information about Koichi.)

I don't buy them yet.
(I haven't bought them yet.)

a tour group of Japanese middle aged men
(a tour group of middle-aged Japanese men)

I searched the diet sneakers on the internet.
(I looked up the diet sneakers on the internet. / I googled the diet sneakers.)

Good point that I thought of was, say hello as you pass through from someone's backward.
(One good point I noticed was how people say hello when they walk past someone from behind.)

Okay, that's it for today. I hope you are all having a great weekend, and I'll be back on Monday with another topic.

Bye for now.

Hi David,

Thanks for your feedback. I have been waiting for this for long;)

Hi everyone,

How was your weekend? A friend took me out for dinner last night. We went to a teppanyaki restraurant. food and wine were good, so I had a good time. I am on duty tomorrow, and of course I am not looking forward to it:(

Hope you all are having a nice weekend,
amo

Hi David,

Thanks for the feedback!

> BTW, what is a washlet?

It's a toilet which sprays warm water to clean up your arse.

Ash

Hi David and everyone,

Thank you for your correction on my phrase, too.: "a tour group of middle aged Japanese men", I was always confused about that order. I hope I will be careful about it next time.

By the way, I couldn't follow the joke: the longest period in a woman's life is the five years between her 39th and 40th birthdays. If any of you could get it, could you please give me a tip?

Hi noriko,

Did you mean that your birthday is same as Fumie's? If so, belated "Happy Birthday to noriko!!" Hope your dreams come true.

Katherine,

I'm afraid I haven't greeted to you yet. Sorry for my late "Nice to meet you!" to you.

Good night, everyone.

Hi David,

Thank you so much for the feedback. It's like a treat after a while: your feedback is always so helpful and I really like it.
I don't get the joke. The numbers are 39th and 40th. They can read as thank you for???

Hi noriko, Tsuneko and David,

Thank you for the bithday messages. :-D
☆★noriko, very belated happy bithday to you!☆★
I wish you good health and happiness in life.

Hi everyone,

Britain is having a sweltering spell. Sun-lovers go to the beaches.
I am going to make box lunches お弁当 because today's is my son's elementary school's sport day.
Have a wonderful weekend!

See you later, alligator.

Fumie

Hi David,

Thank you for your feedback.

「the longest period in a woman's life is the five years between her 39th and 40th birthdays. 」
I can't get what this sentence means....
Could anyone tell me?

Green

Hi David,

> I heard a funny joke the other day: the longest period in a woman's life is the five years between her 39th and 40th birthdays. Do you get it?

Nope. I've googled desperately and I found this on the list of Famous 40th Birthday Quotes and Sayings.

"The best years of a woman's life - the ten years between 39 and 40. Unknown Author."

Oh, and if life begins at 40, how old are you, David?

Ash

The joke is saying that women always lie about their age when they reach 39. It means that when they become 40, 41, 42, etc., they still say that they are 39. They don't admit that they are 40 until they are actually 45 (or 50, according to the quote that Ash found!). That's why there are five years between their 39th and 40th birthdays.

Hi Ash,

Thanks for the beautiful poetic description of a washlet :-) I've got one on my toilet, but I've never used it. It looks a bit scary to me!

I wouldn't know about life beginning at 40 because I am still only 35. I'll let you know in five years.

Hi, David .
Thank you for your feedback I 'm always looking forward to reading them. I do appreciate you.
I haven't heared the funny joke before. And I'm older than the joke said ages already. So that makes sence to me.

Hi, Tuneko .
Thank you for your greeting. And nice to meet you ,too.

Hi,Noriko.
Belated "happy Birthday to you" .
I wish your happiness and good health.

The Atami city(in sizuoka prefecture) holds fireworks displsys many times a year. One of them was held yestreday night. As I was invited from my friend, of course we were stay overnight at a
hotel. We could watch the wonderfiul fireworks display at a room's balcony. And the hotel placed on the hillside so we could watch them as if it displayed in front of us. We had a good time.
Thank you for reading my comment.

Hi David,
I got it that meaning at last.
Thank you.
So I'll say 5 year younger than my real age since today!

Green

Hi Katherine,

I'm glad to hear that you had a wonderful time watching the fireworks display.

Hi David and Ash,

Oh no, I can't follow the high-level talks between you two. David, I thought this joke is only applied to women.
>I am still only 35.??? えー?

Fumie

Hi David,

> Thanks for the beautiful poetic description of a washlet :-)

> I wouldn't know about life beginning at 40 because I am still only 35. I'll let you know in five years.

LOL!

Ash

The joke was very interesting to me, because I am 39 years old, and my birthday is coming soon.

According to the joke or the saying, I will have many 39th birthdays every year from now on! It will be really funny and I like it!!

By the way, a friend of mine has been saying that she is 29 for ten years! I like her courage!

Hi tsuneko, Fumie,Katherine,

Thank you for your messages ^^
And sorry for have not to say "nice to meet you" Katherine, glad to talk to you^^

Hi David and everyone,

I have not known this joke "the longest period in a woman's life is the five years between her 39th and 40th birthdays"
Strange to say but I always let people know my age one year older.
I think I am a bit strange.

noriko

Hi David

Thank you for your feedback:)

Hi Green

I haven't booked yet..I should book soon!
BTW you were watching 'SHOCK' on March 11th?
I'm surprised.
And you watch it many times!I envy you!
