Cycling on Pavements (Feedback)

Thanks for all your comments. As many of you mentioned, this is a particularly difficult issue in Japan because of the high number of very narrow roads. However, I think that a lot of the problem is caused by stupid cyclists, and unfortunately, there are just as many of them as there are stupid drivers. Almost every high school student I see riding a bicycle these days has earphones on, so they cannot hear cars behind them and have no idea what is going on around them. In addition, many of them are trying to send or read texts as they ride. These people should be targeted by the police and fined.

Japan is a country of very low speed limits, with speeds on most roads restricted to 40 or 50 km/h. These speeds are easily achievable by modern bicycles, so you have a very strange situation where bicycles often exceed the speed limits set for cars. By the way, some of you mentioned the idea of having special cycle lanes, but I saw one of those the other day. It was on a very wide pavement that was split into two lanes, one for pedestrians, and one for cyclists. The two were clearly marked, but cyclists were just completely ignoring the signs and riding in both lanes.

I think the main problem is that unlike the situation with cars, there is no punishment for people who cycle dangerously. That needs to change. Also, on roads where there is not enough room for both bicycles and cars, cyclists should be required to dismount and push their bicycles along the pavement. There is no way that a bicycle traveling at 20 km/h or more can be ridden safely through crowds of people walking at 3 or 4 km/h. Anyway, I hope the police / government will do something about this soon.

Here is my feedback on your comments:

I don't still get to used to it, because I have lived in Japan almost 30 years.
(I still haven't got used to it because I lived in Japan for almost 30 years.)

I walk on the pavements every day, and I am often almost hit by cyclists.
(Nice sentence.)

I hope cyclists walk on the pavements pulling the bikes.
(I wish that cyclists would push their bikes on the pavement.)

It's been a while since I last wrote a comment.
(Nice to have you back with us, Tomo.)

There have been a lot of accidents in which pedestrians were struck by cyclists on the sidewalks. Some of them died.
(Very nice.)

Anyway, if I remember correctly, cyclists who break the rules will simply be told to ride on the road and will not get tickets.
(That is the main cause of the problem, I think. Cyclists should have responsibilities in the same way that drivers do.)

I am not sure that you remember this or not
(I am not sure whether / if you remember this or not...)

when I was in Okinawa, not so many people cycling.
(Did you know that "cycle" can be used as a verb like "ski" or "surf"? You can say, for example, "not many people cycled," or "I cycle to work.")

Especially it is dangerous for little children and aged people.

the situation is different here from thats of other countries.

I'm making children clothes and sell it on the Net
(I'm making children's clothes and selling them on the Net.)

It seems quite a lot of cyclists don't even know there are traffic rules.
(Very true! This is a problem in Britain as well, and many drivers complain about it, especially in London.)

so that they can ride bikes proper way.

This is the second time to leave my comment here.
(Hi Mintia. Nice to see you again. You could just write, "This is my second comment" or "This is the second time I have left a comment.")

I have had a busy week so that I posted here with quick comment.
(I have had a busy week, so I will just post a quick comment.)

That's all for today. Have a great weekend, and see you next week.

Hi David,

Thank you for your feedback.

>I'm making children clothes and sell it on the Net
(I'm making children's clothes and selling them on the Net.)

I forgot to put "'s", and I should have used the "-ing" form for the second verb as well. Also, I'm selling more than one clothes, and "clothes" is plural, so I should have written "them". It seems like I need some more writing practice!

Have a great weekend,

Tomo

Hi David,

Thank you for the feedback.
I didn't know that "cycle" can be used as verb.

Hi Tomo,

Your new business is wonderful. When you said, "another one of my hobbies" I thoght so.
You are good with your hands. うらやましい~!

Hi everyone,

Weather seems to be lovely on weekend.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Fumie

Hi David and everyone,

Thanks for your feedback.
Aside from this, you might often hear the danger of cycling without brakes on the road. It's illegal. I think these kinds of things help people to aware of the road rules.

Hi Tomo,
Oh, your new business is selling children's handmade clothes on the net? No wonder you can make it because I saw you had made clothes to your daughter. Good luck with your new business!

Have a lovely weekend,everyone!

Anne

Hi David,

Thanks for your feedback, and I have a question about it, but I am in heaven now so I don't think that I can ask it properly so I will ask you tomorrow, when I am sober. I think I had drunk too much, I am on my way home and I have on duty tomorrow so I hope I can get up as usual like weekdays(lol)

Hi everyone,

Hope you guys are having a great weekend;)

Good night and sweet dreams,

amo

Ps, if I made some typo, please bear with me I am drunk:)

Hi David,

I have been pondering over what you wrote.

> As I expected, not as many people were as interested in this subject as some of the others we have discussed recently.

You mean this subject was like some of the others we have discussed recently in which many people were not interested or you mean this subject was not like some of the others we have discussed recently in which many people were interested?

If you have a moment, could you elaborate on this, please?

Ash
