TITLE：Tomo's Method

Hi everyone,

Well, the weekend was very tiring, but it was also a lot of fun. Around 60 people came to my workshop on Saturday (I was expecting 10-15!), 25 came to my Sunday morning presentation (I didn't think anyone would come because it started at 9.15), and 40 or so came to my Sunday afternoon one. We sold a lot of copies of "An A-Z of Common English Errors," and lots of teachers said they are thinking about using my books with their students next year, so it was very successful from that point of view. Koji (he made a comment on the last entry) came to my Sunday afternoon presentation, and we had some time to talk before it got started.

As I told you, I had a nice long chat with Michael Swan about grammar, language, and teaching, and he took a copy of my book home to read. He said that he will email me with some feedback. Something else happened that was really nice, too. There is a vocabulary researcher called Paul Nation who is based in New Zealand, but who often comes to Japan. He is generally recognized as the world's leading researcher in vocabulary teaching and learning. I have known Paul for a few years, and he was kind enough to write the foreword for my book "Learning English Vocabulary." Anyway, I bumped into him yesterday morning, and he said that he had been rereading an article I wrote in an international journal about the cost and benefit of choosing words to learn. He had seen the article a few years ago when I first wrote it, but he said he had forgotten how good it was, and he said that he had been studying it because he wants to write about my ideas in the next edition of his textbook for vocabulary researchers. That was a nice thing to hear, especially coming from him!

Thanks for all your comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the seminar. If any of you want a copy of the blue or green books but didn't get one on Saturday, please email me, and I will send you one. ("Copy" is the word used for counting books - I don't mean a photocopy).

As trmr said, I was stressing in the seminar that you have to be constantly aware of how language is being used, and even become a kind of "hunter" for words and phrases that you can add to your own knowledge database of English.

Actually, I noticed something very interesting about English when I was watching a You Tube clip today.

TITLE：Find vs. Find Out

Hi team,

Did you have a nice weekend? On Saturday, I went for a ride with a guy I met in the summer on the ferry back from Hokkaido. He has exactly the same BMW bike as me. We rode up to Takayama in Gifu, which is a very beautiful part of the country. I hope I can live somewhere like that in the future. Actually, Saturday was a bit unusual for me because it was the first day that I haven't been in to my office at all in as long as I can remember! I was working again yesterday, though.

Last week, we were talking about the difference between 'find' and 'find out'. I have been thinking about it, and I realized that it is not very easy to explain. I think the best way to understand the difference is to look at lots of example sentences and then try to make your own, so let's do that this week.

TITLE：A New Idea

Hi team,

I have had a new idea for the blog, and I wanted to know what you think. These days, I usually do two entries, one on Monday, and one on Friday. I have been working on my PhD thesis this weekend, and I have a question for Gussan and Lily. I have decided to ask it here because I think the answers might be interesting for everyone. The topic of my PhD is the benefits that Japanese people can gain from practising English with other Japanese people. TITLE：Walk the walk

Hi everyone,

I have been really busy today, rushing around trying to get these new books ready. It's all a bit hectic at the moment, but I am well ahead of schedule, so I'm feeling quite relaxed.

TITLE：Animals and Kids

Hi team,

It's unseasonally warm in Seto today. I went for a walk in the grounds of a temple near my house this morning. I was wearing a jacket, and I was too hot!

Anyway, I'm glad you found the discussion about animals useful. As for 'kids', I don't think it sounds rude, but there again, I don't like kids! Personally, I think that 'monsters' is a much more appropriate word:) I know that some native speakers don't like to use the word, but it is very common. One of the web pages I introduced on the last entry was called something like 'Christchurch Library Kids' Page', so there is no problem with using it in general conversation.

TITLE：More from the new book

Hi everyone,

How was your weekend? I was working all of Saturday and most of yesterday, but in the evening, I went to see the firework display at the Oiden Festival in Toyota. It went on for about 2 hours! I was getting a bit bored towards the end, but the finale was really spectacular, so I'm glad I went.

We are in the final week of testing at my university, and I am leaving for Hokkaido on Thursday night. I saw on the TV this morning that the temperature in Sapporo was about 24 degrees, so I am looking forward to getting away from this heat.

Hi Team,

Did you all have a nice weekend? I went out on my bike yesterday, and I think I went to the same place as Tomo's husband! I wend to a place called Mitsui no Mori in Nagano, and I think I was near Utsukushigaoka because I saw signs for it. There were a lot of cars with Tokyo numbers there, so I guess it is popular with people from a wide area. Anyway, there were a lot of bikers there, so Tomo - maybe I passed your husband somewhere along the road.

Thanks for your comments. It is very nice for a writer when people say that they understand your explanations so even though I have been working late every night this week, your comments made me feel a bit better.

I looked at the manuscript of my book again today, and I realized that if it is A5 size, it will have around 300 pages! It's really hard work, but I'm looking forward to having all the explanations I have ever written all together in one book.

Hi Mi and Asahi. It's great to have you with us. Two years ago, Tomo was in the same position as you - nervous about writing comments. Now she writes natural English that is almost perfect. If you study the way she did, you could be in the same place two years from now.

TITLE：Another / the other

Hi Everyone,

Did you have a nice weekend? I worked all of Saturday and most of Sunday, but last night I went to watch a play performed by the Nagoya Players. The Nagoya Players is an English drama group based in Nagoya, and they do one or two shows every year. This time, they did the Diary of Anne Frank. It was a great show, and a lot of people I know were either in it or helping to organize it, so it was nice to catch up with some old friends.

Anyway, the reason I have been so busy recently is that I am working on the new ALC book, which will be coming out in October. I have already finished writing it, but now the editor is checking it for me, and I am going through making changes. I'm hoping that you will all help by giving me some feedback on whether my explanations are easy to understand or not.

TITLE：Katakana and snow

Hi Everyone,

Glad to hear you enjoyed the weekend. As I'm sure you saw on the news, we had some snow here on Saturday. For me, it was quite strange to see everyone panicking and driving really slowly because I lived in Sapporo for nine years, and people in Hokkaido wouldn't even notice if it snowed the amount that it snowed in Nagoya on Saturday! Anyway, it was very pretty. I went for a walk on Sunday morning and got very wet because the sun was melting all the snow on the trees and most of it seemed to be falling on my head.

TITLE：A few language points

Hi Everyone,

I was very interested to read your discussion about 'at' and 'in'. Actually, prepositions like this are one of the most difficult things to learn in a language. I am still not sure about when to use へ and when to use に in Japanese. I think that there are three key points that learners of English need to understand about prepositions:
1. There are general rules for their use, but there are many exceptions.
2. There are many situations there is more than one correct answer.
3. Mistakes with prepositions do not usually cause serious misunderstandings, so learners shouldn't worry about them too much.

TITLE：A new project

Hi Everyone,

Did you have a nice weekend? I was in Chiba for a teaching conference. It was fun, but it is always nice to get back to Seto. I haven't taken any pictures of my new bike yet, but I will show you them as soon as I do. By the way, have you heard about the death of Norifumi Abe? He was one of Japan's best-loved motorcycle racers. He was killed in an accident with a truck in Tokyo on Saturday night. It seems strange that he could be a top-level racer for so many years and then get killed by a stupid truck driver in the middle of his home town. If you are not interested in motorcycle racing, you may not have heard Abe's name, but he was famous all over the world. I met him once, and he was really friendly and down-to-earth. It is a sad day for all his fans. We will miss him a lot.

Thanks for your comments about the JET programme. Actually, some people say that the real aim of the JET programme is nothing to do with education. The JET programme was started when Japan was at the peak of its economic power, and it was becoming very unpopular around the world. In many countries, people were blaming Japanese companies for taking jobs from people in that country, and governments were beginning to make it more difficult for Japanese companies to do business. Some people say that the JET programme is really just a clever way to improve Japan’s image abroad. The people who take part in the JET programme are all young and they are all university graduates. The idea is that many of these young people will have a great time in Japan, get to know something about the language and the culture, and then go back to their home countries and join big companies or government offices. Because they all have the experience of living in Japan, they will be more sympathetic to Japan in the future. In other words, there will be many more ‘pro-Japanese’ people in positions of authority and power. I don’t know whether that is true or not, but that is what some people think. Anyway, I noticed a few interesting points in the comments, so today I will re-write those and explain some of them. The explanations might be a bit difficult for some readers, so please help out with translations.

TITLE：The JET Programme

Did you have a nice weekend? I had to come into work on Saturday and Sunday, but on Sunday morning, I went out for a ride with my British friend Tony (he’s the rich one who has 5 bikes!) We had a great time. He and his family are building a house in Nagoya, and he was telling me all about the plans for that. Anyway, I was just reading a story in a British newspaper about the JET (Japan Exchange Teaching) scheme. Have you heard of this? It is a government programme that employs young people from other countries (mainly America, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the UK) to ‘team-teach’ with Japanese teachers in junior high and high schools.

TITLE：The blog as a learning community

Hi Team,

Well, here it is – the first day of my forties! I don’t feel any different, and my eyesight is still perfect, but I guess this is the beginning of middle age! My mother called me last night, and she was feeling very old because ‘her first baby’ is now 40!

TITLE：Tomo's challenge

Hi Everyone,

Did you have a nice holiday? I had a fantastic time! I worked a lot, but also spent a lot of time on my bike. I have realized that if I set aside a day for work, I don’t really get much done. It seems to work better for me if I just set aside 2 hours for work and then plan to do something else after. Anyway, that is how I spent my Golden Week.

Some of you were talking about the difference between ‘have something done’ and ‘get something done’. Basically, they are the same, and you can usually use either. With ‘get’, there is a slight nuance of ‘obtaining’ the service. This may mean, for example, that someone else pays for it. If you live in a house that is owned by the government (like 市営住宅), it might be more natural to say, “We got our windows replaced last year” than “We had our windows replaced last year.” The nuance is that someone else did it, and someone else paid for it as well. But this is only true in some unusual examples – usually ‘have’ and ‘get’ are used in the same way.

TITLE：Reformulating

Hi Team,

Have you checked the blog ranking? We are at number 3! I noticed that the number 1 and number 2 blogs are also accessible by cell phone. Do you think it would be a good idea to do that for this blog? If you are interested, I will ask ALC to find out if it is possible.

Did any of you guess the ending of the ‘strange coincidence’ story? When the man decided to kill himself again 10 years after his first attempt, he went back to the same building and jumped off. The coincidence was that he landed on the same man he had landed on when he first tried 2 years ago! I don’t know if it is a true story or not, but it is very funny anyway.

Does anyone know what ‘reformulating’ means? It means re-writing or re-telling something in different words. When I first came to Japan, one of the best ways of studying I found was to write something in Japanese, get my friend to correct it for me, and then read her comments and write out the correct version. Recently, I have started doing that with my students’ writing. Instead of correcting it and giving it back, now I re-write it for them. I try to correct only the real mistakes and leave the style just as the student wrote it. When I have finished checking everyone’s writing, I put them all up on our web page for the students to read. Each student has to find their own writing and compare it to their original. The main reason for doing this is that all the students get lots of what teachers call L+1 input from reading all these texts. Have I explained this before?

TITLE：Learning vocabulary part 1

Hi Everyone,

Did you have a good weekend? I met some 4th year students from Nagoya Women’s University for dinner on Saturday night. This weekend, there is a 謝恩会 after the graduation ceremony, but some of them can’t make it, so we decided to go out for dinner. There were 6 of us – me, Megumi, Masae, Mizuho, Yuko and Mina. They promised to read the blog and make a comment this week, so you might meet them soon. In Japanese universities, it is not unusual for students who major in English to be not very good at speaking, but I think that is starting to change. All of these girls have spent time abroad (England, Australia, Canada …), and it was great to hear them speaking so fluently. We talked about what they had learnt from their time at university, and it was very interesting for me as a teacher to hear what they think! Maybe you can ask them yourselves later this week.

Thanks for all your comments on the topic of divorce and 単身赴任. I’m sure we will come back to this again! Tomo, please don’t worry about hurting my feelings. This blog is interesting because people write what they really think. If I disagree with you, I might argue with you, but I will never be offended.
Lily – thanks for your comment. You are right. These days, people often say, “How weird is that?” instead of the older style “How weird that is!”, but this is a kind of slang, so you have to be careful how you use it.

TITLE：Nutrition for your English

Thanks for all your comments, and a big welcome to all the new bloggers. Let’s hope this family continues to grow in 2007. I’m glad that you are all interested in the idea of comprehensible input. I think it is impossible to learn a language without it.（最初に書いた時 without this と書いたのですが、読み直したら何となく it の方が自然だと思った。この区別はネイティブでも悩む時がある！）Actually, Krashen talked about getting input from language which he described as L+1. This means language that is just above your own level, so for beginners, reading difficult books and listening to native speakers is actually not a good idea because that is L+3 or 4.

I tell my students to always look for language which they can understand, but which they couldn’t have produced themselves. This means 読めば（聞けば）分かるけど、自分では言えなかった. I think this was one of the most important methods I used when I was studying Japanese. I was always looking for and listening to not just the message, but also the language. In other words, I was listening to what people were saying, but also how they were saying it – what language they were using.

TITLE：Comprehensible input

How are things with you? I am always tired on Mondays because I teach all morning and then have a meeting all afternoon. I don’t like meetings. Thank you for your votes on the writing. I think the result is that everyone who entered was a winner in somebody’s eyes!
I have been thinking a lot about teaching English recently (because that’s my job!) and I have realized that the biggest problem for Japanese learners is that you don’t have enough input of natural English. Sorry I was a bit rushed yesterday, but I'm glad you understood my answer to Blue Dream's question. Mac's example of 'fill this in here' is a bit different, though, because 'in' is part of the verb 'fill in'. In this situation, I think 'here' is still an adverb.

以前ここで Oh my God! という表現について討論があったと思いますが、私は今週末このブログのコメントの数を確認するたびに、その言葉を言っていました。

今回、私はブログの担当者ではなく、普通の参加者になった気分でした（これは元から私の希望なので、嬉しいです！）。この状態が続くと私からの更新がなくても皆さんのおかげでブログはいつでも見る意味があります。

I was very sorry to hear about Hikaruri’s friend in America. Have you seen the movie “Bowling for Columbine?” If not, you should watch it. It will help you to understand more about why American society is so dangerous.

昨日、私は高校で模擬授業をしてきました。かなり良い学校だったし、学生達は積極的に授業に参加をしてくれました。私は教材として『あなたの英語★ビフォー⇒アフター』のピクチャーストーリーを使いました（拾った鍵の話）。やはり、いくら高校の英語教育が批評されても、学生は英語についてかなり知識を持っていますよね。Come up with an idea など、とても自然な言い方もたくさん分かっていたようです。これくらい知識があるのに話せないというのは、話していないからだけだと思います。自分の日常生活の中で英語を使おうとする努力さえすれば、すぐにぺらぺらになるでしょう。

Blue Dream’s explanation of how native speakers understand long noun phrases is correct. Actually, Japanese is quite difficult for me in a similar way.

On Friday evening, I went out for a ride with some students on my Suzuki. We went to a place called Orikawa Dam, which is about 40 minutes ride from Seto. Actually, one of the students was riding a big scooter and I had a go on that. I loved it! I think I might have to buy one of those as well. On Saturday, I was practicing at Suzuka on my Yamaha (a new personal best time and no accidents or dangerous moments), and then on Sunday, I went to watch the All-Japan Trial Championships. Those guys are really crazy! After that, I spent about an hour practicing on my bike, and then came home to watch more bike racing on TV.

Anyway, thanks for all your comments again. The discussion about ‘the big lake near the car factory’ was very interesting.

なぜか正しい英語の文法に違和感を持つ日本人はよくいるようですね。ふじしまさんは元々のコメントで正しい文章を言えたのに、「なんか気持ち悪いんですが」と言っていました。

原因は noun phrase（名詞節？）だと思います。Noun phrase というのは、文法的に一つの名詞として見られる長い節のことです。例えば、男の人のことは man と言いますよね。もしその人がカッコいいと言いたいなら The man is handsome. になるでしょう。しかし、どの男の人かを指定したいなら、例えば、「新聞を読んでいる男の人」のように言えます。これを英語に直すと the man (who is) reading a newspaper となります。そのままさっきの文章に入れると The man who is reading the newspaper is handsome. です。Noun phrase がどれだけ長くなっても言葉の順番を考える時はただの名詞として考えます。

Where is the girl you met last week in the shopping mall when you were looking for some new shoes from?

『もしも英語ができたなら…』にも書きましたが、noun phrase には面白い現象が見られます。Noun phrase には head があります。これは追加の説明なしでの純粋な名詞のことです。例えば、さっきの例文だったら、noun phrase の head は man です。皆さんはよくご存知だと思いますが、英語の noun phrase と日本語の noun phrase は順番が逆になっています。英語の noun phrase は head first というパターンです。つまり、節の head が最初に来ます。日本語の場合だと head last になるでしょう。比較してみてください。

この違いはかなり日本人の英語学習者を悩ませるようです。例えば、次のようなミスをよく耳にします。

×　My like music is rock.

面白いことに、世界中の言語は皆名詞節に関して head first か head last になります。他のパターンはありません。そして、head first、または head last 同士の言語だと名詞節の順番の他にも文法的な共通点がたくさんあります。

そして、赤ちゃんは生まれた時から head first・head last というスイッチが頭の中にある、という理論があります。母語を最初に聞く時、head first か head last さえ判断できたら、そのおかげで他の文法のことも自動的に分かるようになるようです。

I’m glad that some of you found out some more about Travis Pastrana. He is a very special person! A few weeks ago at the X-games (like the Olympics, but for crazy and dangerous sports), Travis won the gold medal for best trick by doing a double back-flip (he is the only person in the world who can do this – you can watch a video of it at http://dcshoes.com/home/special_features/pastranaDBF/pastranaDBF.swf), and then, the next day, he won a another gold medal driving a rally car. In this competition, he beat the ex-world champion Colin Mcrae! He is going to race in a Subaru rally car in America next year.

I was going to talk about ways of learning English today, but the discussion about the big lake was very interesting, so I will start that next time. I’m going home now to cook dinner. By the way, thank you Tomo for writing the comment about why you like English. I used that in my reading class this morning. The students thought it was very interesting.

TITLE：The value of reading

Hi Everyone,

It took me about 30 minutes today just to read all of your comments! Thanks for keeping it interesting. The discussion about 'Oh my God!' is very interesting. I use this expression all the time, but I do not believe there is a god. I will tell you my thoughts on religion sometime soon. I was planning to correct some writing today, but most of the English written on the blog last time was perfect, so there was not much point in correcting it. Let's have a 'beginners only' writing day next week.

皆さんのリーディングについてのアドバイスもありがとうございました。今回の話の中に出なかったが、英語学者向けのレベル別に分かれている本もあると皆さん、ご存知でしょうか。これは英語でgraded readersと言います。大きい本屋さんに行けば何冊かが置いてあるはずだし、きっとインターネットでの注文もできると思います。ちょっとＡＬＣの方と相談してまたこの話に戻ります。

TITLE：このブログの今後について

それから、色々なアルクスタッフとブログについて話しました。皆さんのおがけで、私はかなりブログを楽しめるようになってきました。朝、研究室に入り皆さんのコメントを読むのが毎日の楽しみになってきたのです。

ですが、他の仕事もたくさんあるので、ブログにそれほど時間をかけることができない日もあります。そういう時はどうしたらいいか、アルクのスタッフに相談しました。

本当のことを言えば、問題は私です。話す時も書く時も一緒ですが、始まるととまらない！　ブログのもう一つ難しいところは内容です。始めたとき、私は毎回テーマを考えるのが問題になるかなと思ったのですが、やってみるとその真逆です。私がテーマを考えても、皆さんのコメントを読んで、違う話題にしたくなることが非常に多い。下手したら、ブログを書いているだけで１、２時間が過ぎてしまう日もありますが、これでは長続きしません。

以前もこの問題について書いた時、応援のコメントもたくさん来ましたし、「何よりも長く続けて欲しい」という声が多かったです。なので、ブログの面白さを高いレベルに保ちながら、自分がもう少し他の仕事もできるように次のプランを考えました。でも、これは「私のブログ」というより、「私達のブログ」なので、皆さんの意見も是非聞かせてください。

１．ブログの種類を大きく分けて、４種類にします。

なるべくこれらを一つのブログで混ぜたりしないようにしたいと思います。

２．できるだけ全てのコメントに答えたいのですが、それができない日もあるので、皆さんの理解をお願いします。
本当に聞きたいことがあったら、しつこく聞いてね！　とにかく返事がなくても、コメントを載せる時は私が必ず読んでいるので、どんどん書いてください。

３．最後まで書く時間がない日は「今日はここでタイムアップ」という風に書きます。
この時は続きがあるので、書いた分について、私も含めて皆が読めるように自分のコメントを書くのはもちろんかまわないけど、次のブログで私はそれらに答えず、そのまま続ける可能性があるということをご了承ください。

４．今までと同じように、一人の質問に他の読者が答えてくれると非常に助かります！
今回の kind of の話もありがとうございました。

５．本当に忙しい時、私はテーマを提案するので、それで２、３日、皆さんが意見交換でブログを盛り上げてくれると嬉しいです。

TITLE：日本人同士で英語を話すのが効果的なワケ

Thank you for writing so many comments in English. It makes them much easier for me to read! (But reading Japanese is good practice for me, so don’t worry if you are not confident enough to write in English yet).

m.n.さんが Why is it useful for Japanese to talk with Japanese in order to improve English skills? と聞きましたが、これは大切なポイントです。

言語は勉強し、マスターしてから使うものではなくて、使いながら身に付ける物です。自分の発想を英語で言おうとする過程がもっとも重要な行動なので、これさえやっていれば、相手はそれほど重要な存在ではありません。

「お互いの間違いがうつるからいやだ」という意見もよく聞きますが、特に初級の人だと相手の話し方に注目する余裕がない人がほとんどだと思います。

「間違っていてもお互いを直すことができない」とうコメントも聞きますが、これはおかしいです。だって、楽器、スポーツ、料理など、「直してくれる人がいないなら練習する意味がない」と思う人はいないでしょう。確かに初級者同士の日本人が勉強せずに適当に会話を進めようとするだけならすぐに壁にぶつかりますが、他の習い事と同じく、授業を受けて、独学をした上で練習するならその場ですぐに直してもらえなくても全然問題ありません。

英語の勉強について、多くの日本人が意識していないのは「理想な」と「効果的な」勉強や練習の違いです。多くの人にとって英語の一番理想的な学習法は次のようなものでしょう。

TITLE：Must be の使い方

I just realized that I can see what time you all post your comments on the blog. iun, you should go to bed earlier!

今日は最初に前から皆さんに教えたかったワンポイントレッスンをします。Must be の使い方についてです。間違っている日本人があまりにも多い。少なくてもこのブログの読者の皆さんは正しく使えるようにしましょう！

問題点は「きっと」の英訳です。Must be は事実を見た上で、推測によって結論に至る時にしか使いません。次の例を見てください。

I know that Mari has a new boyfriend, and I know that his name is Kenji. When I meet Mari and she is with a boy I have never seen before, I could say “You must be Kenji.” （間違ったら怒られるだろうけど！）

日本語の「土曜日の宴会はきっと楽しいよ」を英語に訳す時は must be が使えません。It must be fun. はよく耳にしますが、正しい言い方は I’m sure it will be fun.、または It should be fun. です。事実を論理的に整理した結果の結論だと must be でいいのですが、自分の予測などの場合は使えないので、注意してください。

私の新しいバイクをいっぱい褒めてもらって、嬉しかったです。Tomoさんのおっしゃる通り、トライアルバイクには座る場所がありません。基本的に立ちながら乗ります。私はまだなれていないので、時々そのことを忘れて座ろうとして、いつもショックを受けています！　

Tomoさんは look forward の使い方についてコメントを書きましたが、これは特別な決まり文句です。特に E-mail だとよく I’m looking forward to ではなくて、単に look forward to ... のように言います。

DAさんは今回前置詞の質問をしましたが、これは多分英語の一番微妙な分野だと思います。

機械の例だと with the machine でも on the machine でもあり得ますが、それはテストするものと、そのテストに使う機械の大きさの比較の問題になるでしょう。機械の方が大きいなら on the machine ですが、機会が小さければ with the machine になります。By the machine という言い方はあまりしません（でもiunさんの by machine の説明もOKです）。

とにかく前置詞にはルールがないので、「慣れ」の問題だと思います。詳しく勉強をしたい人には私は Cambridge University Press の Grammar in Use を薦めます。しかし、問題を全部解けても、それで前置詞を使いこなせるとは言えません。

仕方がないと思います。私は12年間日本に住んでいても「どこかへ」と「どこかに」の違いがわかりませんが、ほとんど正しく使い分けているようですので、あまり気にしていません。

日本語を勉強し始めた時、私はtomoさんと同様（この言葉、初めて使いました！　どこから来たのでしょうか？　合っていますか？）「漠然」を我慢できませんでした。

しかし、語学ははしごのように上っていくものではないので、その思い込みが自分の進歩をとっても邪魔していることに気づきました。「漠然」を我慢できるようになったら、一気に上達のペースが上がりました。楽にもなったし…。

最後にtomoさんの質問ですが、元の文章がもうすでに過去形になっているのであれば、そのままにすることが多いですが、場合によっては過去完了形に変えることもできます。これはルールではなくて、好みの問題です。

We had a busy day at Nanzan Seto today because the NHK programme Eigo de Shaberanaito came to film at our World Plaza (a place where students go to speak English). I think the programme will be shown on September 22, so please watch it if you are at home on that date. A man called Matsumoto san was the presenter. I have never seen him before, but all the students knew who he was. （時制を合わせることに注意！　knew だから最後のbe動詞も過去形にします） He was really nice, and he was very good at expressing meaning without using difficult words. I think he is a good role model for Japanese learners of English.

TITLE：Bike と the circle of learning

Hi Everyone. Hope you all had a nice weekend.

Bike という単語で私は皆さんを混乱させたようですね！　アメリカではどうなっているかわかりませんが、イギリス人はオートバイのことも自転車のことも bike と言います。私が読んでいる一番人気のあるバイク雑誌のタイトルは、そのまま、Bike です。

オートバイと自転車の区別は文脈だけによります。私が今回買ったものはもちろんオートバイですよ。写真を見てください。

これは特別なバイクで、トライアルバイクと言います。特徴は軽さと操りやすさです。このようなバイクはゆっくりバランスを取りながら険しい山を登ったりします。大会の場合だと、勝負は速さよりも足を使う頻度で決まります。コースに入ると足が着くたびに減点されます。

うまいライダーだと本当にあり得ないようなところを走りますよ。しかも、日本人も強い！　一昨年（？）の世界チャンピオンは藤波貴久選手でした。興味のある方は Trials Action を見てください。左側にある Gallery をクリックをすると写真がたくさん見られます。イギリス人ライダーの Dougie Lampkin という人の写真を見て！　今度は自分がこんなことをやっている写真も載せるから！

こういうバイクだと普通のバイクとの乗り方が大分違うので、土曜日の初練習は大変でした！　手にマメが出きて、かなり痛かったです！　

でも楽しかったので、手と筋肉痛が治ったらまた練習に行きます。楽しみです。

TITLE：'Yes' to phonics, but don't forget Latin!

First of all, let me say thanks to Tomo for explaining phonics. I thought about doing it last week, but I didn’t know how to explain it in writing. I didn’t think about using katakana！

今回は色々な方がとても面白いコメントを載せていますよね。本当にありがとうございました。私のコメントを付け加える必要がないかもしれませんが、いくつかポイントを挙げさせてもらいます。

今はフォニックスの話で盛り上がっていますが、実はTomoさんの最初のコメントの中にもとても大切なポイントが隠れていました。皆さんはご存知だと思いますが、英語はラテン語やギリシャ語などに基づいた言語なので、これらの基本を少し勉強することも英語の単語力を増やす方法のひとつです。

例えば、bi は「二つ」、tri は「三つ」という意味で、cycle は「輪」だということを皆さんは知っていましたか。だから、bicycleはひとつの単語で、単に「二つ・輪」という組み合わせです。

知っている日本人は少ないと思いますが、「一つ・輪」という意味の単語もあります。それはどうなるでしょうか。答えは unicycle です。uni は「一つ」という意味で、色々なところで出会えます。例えば、unit, united, university などなどです。

もう一つ例を挙げると、ラテン語から来た lateral という単語があります。意味は side です。それを uni と組むとunilateral(片面)という意味を持つ単語になります。

それから、カメラマンが使う「三脚」という物がありますよね。これは英語でなんと言うでしょうか。答えは tripod です。pod は「足」という意味なので、単に「三つ・足」という組合わせになるだけです。

少し時間がかかるかもしれませんが、たくさんの英単語を身に付けたい人は、まずラテン語やギリシャ語の基本を勉強するといいと思います。英語のボキャブラリーの本にも載っているので、参照してみてください。

今回はm.k.さんが「訛り」や｢方言｣の話をあげましたよね。これは確かにそうだと思います。例えば、mom とma’am だとイギリス人はアメリカ人と全然違う風に発音します。ちなみに ma’am は単に madam の省略ですので、元々１音節しかない mom より母音を伸ばします。気づいていない方は大勢いらっしゃると思いますが（ネイティブも含めて）、「’」は何かを「省略」したという意味です。

それから、もう一つ是非強調したい英語の発音についてのポイントがあります。日本人は英語の発音しにくい音に注目しますが、単語を正しく発音するため、そして聞いた時、すぐに理解できるためには、個別の音よりも音節の数とアクセントの位置の方がはるかに重要です。これらの情報は辞書に載っているので、是非参考にしてください。m.n.さんがおしゃったように、発音は目ではなく、耳で覚えるしかないのですが、少し目でもわかるような書き方もあります。私は学生達に次のような書き方をすすめています。

Environment oOoo

このパターンに従って発音すれば、例えば一つ一つの音が100％正しくなくても本物の発音に近づきます。また、音よりもこのパターンは訛りや方言によって変わりにくいので、その分勉強になるでしょう。

TITLE：How do you read that?

Hello and welcome to a brand new week! I can’t believe it is the middle of June already! I am feeling a bit more relaxed this week because I did my presentation yesterday. There was a good crowd, and I got lots of interesting input from the participants on the topic of first language and first culture interference for Japanese learners of English.

週末の間にコメントをたくさん頂きましたが、質問も多かったので、今日はそれらに答えるだけで終わってしまうかもしれません。しかも、昨日テレビでやっていたバイクのレースを録画したので、早く家に戻って、それを見たい！

ネイティブにもあまりスペルが得意でない人が多いという話を聞いて安心した方が結構いたようですね。

Tomoさんの質問はとても面白いですね（Miyokoさんも気になっていた）。英語人（子供からこの言い方を学んだが、便利でしょう！）はどうやってスペルを覚えるのでしょうか。ふりがなのある日本語を母語とする人から見れば、ネイティブは英単語をいったいどのように習うかを疑問に思うのは当然のことですね。

実は小学校で先生と一緒にたくさん練習をしたり、スペリングテストなどをやったりするだけだと思います。発音は耳で習いますので、例えば、授業中に新しい単語が出ると先生が発音をして、生徒はそれで覚えます。大人になってから知らない単語が出てくると「適当」に読む人も多いです。しかし、知っている単語の数が増えれば増えるほど色々なパターンに慣れていくので、新しい単語が出た時はそれに似ている単語のパターンと比較をしながら発音を推測すると思います。

例えば、私が知らない英単語を今辞書で探していたら、psephologist という単語がありました。意味は「選挙での投票パターンを分析する人」だそうです。この単語は聞いたことがないし、フォニックスで読むこともできません。しかし、psychology, psychic, pseudo などのような単語は知っているので、これらの発音から考えるとこの新しい単語はきっと最初の‘ｐ’を発音しないだろうと推測できます。それから、その後の‘ph’も telephone, emphasis などの単語を考えると‘ｆ’の発音をするということが分かります。最後の部分の‘ologist’はわかるので、知識を合わせるとこの新しい単語も正しく読めます。

もうひとつの道具は「何となく」の感覚です。これは日本語を読んでいる日本人もよく利用するでしょう。例えば、見たことがない漢字に二つ以上の読み方が考えられるとします。でも、「何となく」この発音が正しい（他だと変な感じがする）と分かることも多いでしょう。母語が英語の人もこのように考えます。本を読めば読むほど色々な単語のパターンに慣れていくので、たくさん読む人はこの感覚が特に強いと思います。つまり、この「何となく」の感覚は、実は全体的にその言葉についての知識や経験から生まれてくるもの、ということです。

でも、このシステムは100％信頼できるものではないので、色々な単語を誤って発音する人が大勢います！　

実は今日の英語リーディングクラスで面白いことがありました（なぜ英語のリーディングクラスで日本語を読んでいたのかは、また今度説明します！）。

TITLE：More on wordlists

Thank you for sharing your ideas on vocabulary learning, and welcome to all the newcomers. There were quite a lot of questions this time, so I will try to answer them first.

Tomoさん：Phonics というのはA,B,Cなどの「音」の発音のことですよね。確かに私達は幼稚園でそういう風に習っていたと思います。でも、発音記号を勉強している人はいないと思います。実はネイティブの英語の先生でも発音記号を書いたり読んだりできる人は少ないんです。だから、先生でない一般のネイティブが発音記号を見たら何かさっぱり分からないと思います。

How do native speakers learn to spell? と聞かれたら、本当は They don't! と叫びたくなります！　私の国では（アメリカはもっとひどいらしい）、特に大学を卒業していない人にはスペルがボロボロの人が多いです。私が警官だったころ、周りの人が書いた文章などを読むとスペルの間違いだらけだったという記憶があります。今でもネイティブの友達から長いメールがくると必ずどこかにスペルの間違いがありますよ。

小学校では spelling test を毎週のようにしていましたが、私は小さいころから読書が好きだったので、そのおかげでスペルができるようになったと思います。Phonics を習った方が分かりやすいという人もいますが、英語は基本的に phonetic spelling の言語ではないので、このシステムで読める単語には限りがありますよね。でも、日本人の学習者には役立つかもしれません。

m.n.さん：Good evening. でメールを始めるのは問題ないです。むしろとても自然な言い方だと思います。"Keep me English" というフレーズは私もさっぱり意味がわかりませんが、おそらく European Community の法律、経済などの共同発展を反対するスローガンではないでしょうか。今回のワールドカップはドイツで行っていますよね。伝統的に言うと、ドイツは European Community の発展を応援する国で、イギリスはどちらかというとその発展に「ブレーキ」をかける国だと言われます。だから、ワールドカップの舞台を利用してECへの反対をアピールしているのではないでしょうか。これと全然関係のない説明もあるかもしれませんが、私にはこれくらいしか思い浮かばないです。

Reiさんの提案はとてもよいと思います。この時代だと多くの人はインターネットにアクセスができるので、ボキャブラリーを増やすためには立派な道具となるでしょう。

まつさんの学習法もとても効果的だと思います。Longman Language Activator は私も持っています。単語の使い分けを調べるための最高の道具なので、英語の先生もよく使います。

それから、まつさんはよく Will と Going to の説明の矛盾に気づきましたね！　実は誕生日の話だとどちらでもいいんです。どちらを使っても意味は変わりません。Will と Going to はどちらでも使えるケースが多いのですが、日本人が分かりやすいように「このシチュエーションだと Will、このケースなら Going to」のように説明した方がはっきりして、分かりやすいでしょう。

『もしも英語ができたなら…』でも書きましたが、言葉は水のようなものです。グラス、ビンなど、何かに入れないと人に渡すことができません。しかし、容器に入った水と自由に流れている水は別の動きをしますよね。言葉もそれと同じです。ある程度固定しないと教えることができないのですが、固定するとどうしても本物と少し本質が変わってきます。学習者はこれを意識していれば問題ないと思います。

さて、今日の私からの話は人間の記憶についてです。人間には短期記憶（short-term memory）と長期記憶（long-term memory）がありますよね。ワードリストなどで単語を覚えたとしても、それは短期的なことに過ぎないので、すぐに忘れてしまうでしょう。研究によると short-term memory から long-term memory へ情報をコピーしたい時は次のスケジュールで勉強すると一番いいようです。

TITLE：Friends and acquaintances

Hi Everyone, and thank you Honeymonster and m.n. Before I forget, let me answer the question about "Are you sure?" This expression is not exactly the same as "Really?" Sometimes you can use either, but sometimes "Are you sure?" would be strange.

"Really"は相手のことを疑っているから言う時もありますが、単に自分の驚きを表すためだけに使うこともできます。例えば:

CHILD: I don't have any homework to do today.
MOTHER: Really? (I don't believe you!)

FRIEND: Did you know that English has more than 1 million words?
YOU: Really! (I didn't know that!)

Really は非常に意味的に柔軟性のある単語で、発音を変えるときりがないほどのシチュエーションで使うことができます。

Are you sure? は Really よりも使える範囲が狭いと思います。この表現の意味は「それは本当のことですか」のような感じです。人に何かをあげようとする時、またはしてあげようとする時によく使います。例えば、

Would you like something to drink?
No thanks. I'm fine.
Are you sure?
Yes, really - I'm not thirsty.

Do you want me to pick you up tomorrow morning?
No thanks. I'll catch the bus.
Are you sure? It's no trouble.
Yes, but thanks anyway.

Really? と同じように人の言うことを疑う時も Are you sure? が使えますが、単に確認をしたいだけ、というときにも使うことができます。

What time does the movie start?
At 7.
Are you sure?
Yes. I checked the newspaper this morning.

驚いた時、信じられない時は Are you sure? はあまり適切でないと思います。確かにこの意味で使っているアメリカ人はたまにいますが、これは標準語ではありません。日本人が使うと単に間違っていると思われてしまうでしょう。結論を言うと、これらの表現はm.n.さんがおしゃったように、人の使い方に慣れてから真似をするしかないでしょう。

TITLE：The New Car Phenomenon

Hi Everyone,

Did you have a nice weekend? I had a great time in Suzuka. Actually, I spent most of my time translating between the Canadian riders and the Japanese mechanics and pit crew. It was quite difficult because there were a lot of things I didn't understand in either language! Anyway, I learnt a lot, and I'm looking forward to riding again myself as soon as possible.

Bondiblueさん（with Blue Dream!）、日本文学のレッスンをありがとうございました！　私は普通の日本語を読むだけでせいいっぱいなので、Classical Japanese は遠慮しておきます！　でも、Modern Japanese のバージョンもきっとあると思うので、いつかそちらに挑戦してみたいと思います。

今日は「頭がいい・悪い」の意味について書こうと思っていましたが、m.n.さんのコメントを読んで違う話題が思い浮かびました。（本当は二つのアイディアが思いついたけど、もうひとつの方はまた今度書きます）。「頭がいい」の話は私の個人哲学の話だけなので、それもまた今度にします。

TITLE：More on dictionaries

Hi Everyone,

I didn't do anything this morning because I was up uｎｔｉｌ late last night battling with mosquitoes in my bedroom! I don't know how they get in my house, but I got bitten about 7 times last night, so I have to find some way of stopping them.

ブログの更新頻度を少し減らすことについて、皆さんのご理解をありがとうございました。週３ペースだったら問題ありません。こうした方が少し余裕を持って、言いたいことが全部言えると思います。

今回は多くの方々が Your students are lucky. と言ってくれたのですが、昨日ちょうど教え子達に「辞書についての面白いコメントがあるからブログを見てね」と言ったので、ブログを見てほしかった本当の理由を疑われているかもしれません！　学生の皆さん、これは本当のコメントですよ！　自分で書いているわけではない！

でも、実はラッキーなのは私だと思います。今の教え子達は面白い人ばっかりで、授業がとても楽しいです。こんなことをやって給料をもらえるなんて、私は幸せです。私が今教えている学生達のほとんどが数学・情報処理専攻の二年生です（週一回の面白い一年生のクラスもありますが）。英語以外にも難しい授業がたくさんあるようで、大変だそうです。本当のことを言えば、皆の方が私よりずーっと頭がいいと思います！　この前教室で、ある学生がクラスメートに数学か何かの宿題の説明をしていましたが、どう見ても私にはまったく理解できない世界。悔しくて、数学を勉強したくなりました！

みよこさんもおっしゃっていましたが、勉強や知識の価値は社会人にならないとなかなか気づかないよね。私も今から考えたら大学の時はもったいないくらい勉強していませんでした。後悔しています。昔嫌いだった理科、音楽、数学、歴史など、時間があれば全部をゼロから勉強しなおしたいと思うくらいです。しかし、大人になってからだと何よりも、時間がない！

しかし、私はそうでしたが、今の教え子達は（時々文句を言いながら！）英語の必要性を感じているし、一所懸命にやっているので、とても教えやすいです。大学のころの自分と比べたら立派な大人だと思います。

ちなみに、私は「頭がいい」というフレーズの意味について大変興味を持っています。次回はそれについて少し話をしますね。

TITLE：Hello again.

Hello again. I went mountain biking this morning, but the track I wanted to try out was too steep, so I had to come back. I will try and run up it tomorrow to find out where it goes.

今回、辞書の話に関する皆さんのコメントを読んで、私は涙が出そうだった。やはり学習者には、先生にいくら言われるよりも、きっとこのような先輩の声の方が100倍くらいインパクトがあると思います。本当にありがとうございました（うれし涙）。

しかし、ブログがこれだけ面白くなったことによって、実は私がちょっと大変なことになっています。毎日学校に来るとすぐにブログを見ますが、これだけすばらしいコメントがたくさん載っていると読むだけでも時間がかかるし、読むと山のように新しいアイディアを思いつくので、自分の記事を書くのにもすごく時間がかかっています。

正直言って、このブログを始める前の第一の不安は次々と面白い話題を考えることでしたが、皆さんの面白いコメントのおかげで、実はその逆のことが問題になってしまいました。皆さんのコメントのおかげで書ききれないほどのアイディアが出てくるので、少し他の仕事をサボる日もあるのです！

毎回私が書く分量を減らすという選択もありますが、私は書き始める（または喋り始める！）と終わらない人なので、それよりも少し私の記事を更新する頻度を減らそうかなと思っています。皆さんがOKと言ってくれれば、私は大体週３回（月・水・金）のペースで更新したいと思っています。そうすれば皆さんもコメントをゆっくり書けるし、私も皆さんからのコメントをゆっくり読んで、自分の言いたいことを全部書けるので、その方が１回１回の分量を減らすより面白い方法だと思います。

実は今回のMiyoko、Blue Dream、Tomo、Bondiblue、Snowberryさん達のコメントの方が、私が書いたことよりもずーっと面白いと思いますので、私の記事の更新頻度を少し減らしてもそれほどブログの面白さには影響がないと思います（悲しいような、うれしいようなことだけど！）。皆さん、本当にありがとうございました。今日、これから授業で学生達に皆さんのコメントを読ませるつもりです。私が言うよりも絶対に学生に響くと思うからです。

記事の更新頻度を減らしても、毎日皆さんのコメントを読んでいることは変わらないので、是非自分の経験談、考え方、学習法などについてどんどんコメントを載せ続けてください。

TITLE：The dangers of dictionaries

Hi Everyone,

This morning, I decided to go for a long run. I ended up running about 10km over the mountains near my house. It was beautiful! Even though it was really hot near my house, the mountains were cool, and it was lovely to run in the shade of the trees. I'm going to do the same route again tomorrow on a mountain bike.

TITLE：Finding your own way

Hi Everybody,

I'm in a good mood today. （よく考えたら、この言い方を知らない人も多いでしょう。是非覚えてください。意味はキゲンがいいです。反対の意味だとI'm in a bad mood.と言います） I watched a motorcycle race on TV last night and my favourite rider won.

Actually, I was just re-reading my blog from yesterday and I noticed that I spelt 'practicing' with a 'c'. That is okay in American English, but it should be 'practising' in British English if it is a verb. Like I said, I sometimes get confused!

Kanaさん、コメントをありがとうございました。first time の使い方、見事にできていますね！　私が書いた本がこのように実際に学習者の英語に影響を与えるのは何よりも幸せなことです。多くの本についても同じことが言えるでしょうが、買うだけではなくて、本当に勉強をすると意外と効果はありますよ！（笑）ちなみに、a couple　でもOKです。

それから、Soraさん、はじめまして。Soraさんが提案した練習法はとても効果的だと思いますが、感心するのは自分に合う練習法を見つけたことですね。Kanaさんもおっしゃっていましたが、モチベーションを保つのは一番大切なことに違いないと思います。人によっては環境、生活のリズム、ラーニングスタイルなど、色々と個人的な事情があるので、自分が楽しくでき、継続できるような学習法を見つけるのがとても重要なことです。「英語を使うチャンスがない！」と言っている方は是非もう一度考え直してください。しようと思えば、実は毎日色々な方法で英語に触れることができますよ。

私はよく「どうすれば英語ができるようになる？」と聞かれますが、そのように聞く人は本当にわからないのかな？といつも疑問に思います。

似た話だと思いますが、私は去年、三ヶ月間で頑張って５キロやせました。その時、私は女子大で働いていたので、やはり私の行動に興味を持った学生が大勢いました。毎日のように「やせ方を教えてください！」と言われ続けていました。私はこのように答えました。

Okay. I can tell you how to lose weight. I promise that if you do what I tell you, you can lose as much weight as you want.

これを聞くと大興奮しますよね。だって、確実にやせる方法を教えてもらえるって、素晴らしいことでよう。

では、皆さんにもこの「特別な、保証付き」なやせ方を教えましょうか。健康にもいいし、やれば必ずやせるよ！

TITLE：Japanese speaking English to Japanese

Hi Everyone,

Hope you had a nice weekend, and thanks for writing so many interesting comments. It is very interesting to hear about everyone's experiences. As I told you, I am doing research on the idea of Japanese people using English together, and your comments have given me a lot to think about.

Miyokoさんの"I am experimental proof"という言い方は大丈夫だと思います。それから、ｍｋさんは'realize'のスペルを疑問に思っていましたが、実はイギリス英語にでもこのように書く人がいるので、私は別に日本人に合わせて書いたわけではありません。でも、確かに長く日本にいるせいで私は、どちらがイギリスで、どちらがアメリカの綴りか迷うこともたまにあります。

Blue Dreamさんが書いたことに私は大賛成です。日本人同士で英語を使うだけならなかなか上達はしないでしょう。しかし、全体的な英語学習プランの中でだったら、このような練習は不可欠です。だって、Chiharuさんの言うように、168時間ある一週間の中で英語を使っている時間が１時間しかないなら、できるようになるはずもないですから。もしあなたの周りに外国人の友達が多くて、毎日のように英語を使うチャンスがあるなら、このように日本人同士での練習をする必要はないでしょうが、ほとんどの日本人には、それが現実でないと思います。

私が札幌にいた時、秋になると真駒内公園と言うところで足にホイール付きの長い板を履いて公園を回っている人の姿が見えました。これは雪が降るのを待っているスキーヤー達です。皆長い間スキーをやっていないから、とりあえず筋トレとバランス感覚のブラッシュアップのために練習しています。雪が積もってからこのような練習をするのはもったいないから、実際の雪の上での滑りと少し違っても、何もやらないよりは有効な練習になるのは当たり前のことですね。

英語の練習も同じように考えてください。日本人同士で練習するのは理想的な練習ではないかもしれませんが、練習になるということには違いないです。

スキーヤーの話に戻りますが、「そういう練習は嫌だから雪を待つ」と思う人もいるでしょうが、この人たちは雪が降ってもすぐには上手に滑れないので、感覚が戻るまでの時間をロスするでしょう。

英語の場合だと「海外に行ってから英語を使う」と思っている人は大勢いますが、せっかく海外にいて、話す相手がいるのに、自分の不慣れや練習不足で結局何も言えないのは悔しいでしょう。だから私は、留学を考えている人にいつも次のようにアドバイスをしています。

TITLE：Playing the cello

Blue Dreamさんが、外国人が持つ、その名前の印象を知りたがったので、私だけの感想を言わせてもらいます。Blue には確かに様々なイメージかあります。多くの場合、「悲しい」「切ない」などと感じますが、Blue sky というイメージもあるので、必ずしもそうとは言えないでしょう。この名前の場合は Dream と組んでいるおかげで、私には、ボーっと空を飛んでいるようなイメージが浮かびますが、それは私だけかもしれません。外国人の知り合いのいる方は是非聞いてみて、ここでBlue Dreamさんに教えてください。

みよこさん、名前を表示できなかった原因は分かりませんが、とりあえず Hi and welcome to the blog!

Mannaさんという方も初めてコメントを載せてくれましたよね。Hi to you too. 語学について、私はMannaさんと同感です。私も違う言葉を知ったおかげで、もっと自分の母語について学んだ気がします。「…すればするほど…」の英語版はMannaさんがほとんど正しかったのですが、単に The more I..., the more I... だけでいいです。なので、The more I learn English, the more I learn Japanese. が正しい言い方です。'I realize that' の部分は使えません（もし使うとしたら、最初に入れます⇒ I realize (that) the more I learn English, the more I learn Japanese.）。

実はこの表現にはバリエーションがたくさんあるので、覚える価値があると思います。例えば、

The more you eat, the fatter you get.（you は一般的に「だれでも」という意味です。古い言い方だと one もありますが、現代の英語だと辞書以外ではほとんど見ません）
The more you speak, the better your English will be.
The less money you spend, the more you will save.
The less time you have, the more effeciently you work.
The more he speaks, the less I understand!

それから、話が変わりますが、私は昔から学習者に「英語は習って、できるようになってから使うものではない！」と言っています。使いながら身に付けるしかないからです。しかし、多くの日本人は「英語が話せるようになってから話す」と考えているようです。つまり、たくさん勉強をして、知識が身についてから使うことに挑戦する、という哲学でしょう。でも私に言わせてみれば、それは「泳ぎ方をまず勉強して、泳げるようになってからプールに行く」と同じようなことです。「習うこと」と「使うこと」はそんなにはっきり分けられません。

この話はいつも自分なりに学生に説明していますが、今日は他の先生に素晴らしい文のことを教えてもらいました。ぜひ皆さんにも見てもらいたいと思ったので掲載しますね。

TITLE：Your ideas

Hi Everyone,

今日、私はとてもきげんが良いです。今朝、仕事に来る前にいつものように山の林道でジョギングができたし、仕事に来てブログを見たら、これだけ参加してくれた人が増えたということが分かったから。とても嬉しいです。皆さんが書いていることの方が私の話よりずーっと面白いと思うので、この調子だと益々読んでくれる人が増えるのではないでしょうか。

質問が多くなりすぎるとすぐに答え切れないと思いますが、できる範囲で頑張ります。Blue Dream（是非その名前の素を教えてください！）さんの質問はとても面白いと思います。「英語の sorry に使い方がありすぎて使えない」という悩みは分かりますが、実は日本語についても同じことが言えますよ！

例えば、「すみません」と「ごめんなさい」の違いを考えてください。私が最初に日本に来た時、これらの使い分けに本当に悩まされました！　偶然に地下鉄で人とぶつかった時、私はいつも「ごめんなさい」と言っていましたが、友達に「日本人なら『すみません』と言います」と直されました。よく考えたら、「すみません」は色々なシチュエーションに使えますよね。例えば、レストランでウエーターを呼ぶ時、人の足を踏んでしまった時、人の前を通った時などなどです。しかも、「すみません」は Sorry. という意味でも使うけど、Thank you. の意味で使う時もあるでしょう。これは英語圏の人を混乱させます！

残念ながら、このような言葉の使い分けは説明を聞いてすぐにできるものではなくて、ネイティブの言い方を意識しながら自分で挑戦したり、失敗したりするしかないです。頑張ってください。

ちなみに、Sorry about the weather. は面白い例だと思います。普段は言いませんが（天気が悪いのは人のせいじゃないから）、例えば、サッカーの試合で、相手のチームは違う町からわざわざ来てくれたのに大雨になった時はこのように言う人はいるでしょう。確かに難しいですね！

Chiharuさんという方からコメントをいただいて、とても嬉しいです！　実は私はずーっとKiroroの玉城千春のことが大好きだったからです（もう結婚しましたっけ：（　）。

（この）Chiharuさんが挙げた問題は、実はネイティブでも悩みます。確かに普通に知らない人にでも挨拶をする人もいれば、無視をする人もいます。でも、挨拶はやっぱりした方がいいと私は信じているので、いつもします。無視された時はいつも気にしていません。しかし、ひとつだけアドバイスがあります。中途半端な「無視されるかもしれない…」というような挨拶だとその通りになってしまうケースが多いと思います。挨拶をするなら、相手が無視できないような仕方がいいでしょう。私はいつもこのようにしますが、それでもやはり無視されることもあります。仕方がないですね。

それから、mkさんのコメントを読んで、私は新しいアイディアを思いつきました。mkさんは「“外国語を学ぶ”際に必要な姿勢や考え方」の話をしましたが、このブログを読んでいる人は本当に色々な国や環境で英語を勉強しているので、是非自分の経験や考え方を皆が参考にできるように載せてください。mkさんが「きちんとした theory」と言ってくれましたが、私の知識はただ何万人の学習者を見たこと、それから自分の日本語学習者としての経験からくる物だけです。実はこのブログを始めたひとつの目的は私自身の教育です。皆さんのコメント、質問、悩み等について読むと私も少しずつ教育者として力が伸びると思いますので、どんどん書いてください。

ともさん、本を気に入ってくれてうれしいです。また三人のお子さんの教育に私の本が少しでも影響をしていると思うと益々うれしいです！　私はともさんのやっていることに大変興味があります。多くの日本人の間には「日本人同士で英語を話しても仕方がない」という誤解が共通してありますが、それでもともさんは自分のネイティブでない英語で子供と会話をしている。これはとても感動な話です。

まったく同じことではないけど、実はともさんに参考になる研究があります。親が言葉を使えないということはもちろん珍しいですが、耳が聞こえない子供の世界だと親が自分にとっての第二言語（つまり手話）を利用して子供とコミュニケーションをしなければならない。このケースは決して珍しくありません。私が見た研究によると、親の手話にクセや不自然ななまりがあっても、子供は、親としか使っていないのに、完璧な手話ができるようになったそうです。つまり、親の間違いや不自然な言葉は子供にうつらなかった、ということです。

ともさんのやっていることは本当にすばらしいと思うので、時々お子さんの英語の状態について報告をしてください。

それから、Shokoとリサさん、私の答えがためになったのは嬉しいですが、特に This/There の違いについて、自分もまだまだ勉強をしなければならないと思うので、もっとしっかりした説明ができるようになったらもう一度書かせてください。

ちなみに、「挨拶の距離」の話は盛り上がりましたね！　私だけの悩みでないということを知って、とても安心しました。ありがとうございました。周りの人に調査をすると「携帯を見ているふり」「手で持っている書類に夢中なふり」などなど、色々な対策があるようです！

ちなみに、皆さんには「自分だけかなぁ」と思い込んでいるような悩みはありませんか。是非皆で話合いましょう！

Thank you for helping me with my Japanese - this blog might be a good way for me to get Japanese lessons for free! (Just joking).

実は昨日の文書を「保存」しょうとした時、私の指は振れていました！本当に緊張しました！でも、皆さんのコメントのおかげで少し不安がなくなりましたので、今日は大丈夫です。

Actually, if you look at the responses to my questions, there is an interesting lesson for all language learners. 皆さんからのフィードバックは本当に私にとって役立ちますが、これだけためになるコメントがもらえたのは質問の具体的さにも関係があるでしょう。

Most Japanese students just ask teachers to "check my English", but they don't think carefully enough about what, exactly, they are unsure of. If you ask detailed questions, you will get detailed answers.

上達をしたいなら、単に「私の英語をチェックしてください」ではなくて、昨日私が書いたように、「この日本語を書きました。疑問に思うポイントはこれとこれです」のようにいえたら本当にすばらしいことです。実はスピーキングについても同じことが言えます。

英語を習っている人のほとんどは「先生、今日何を教えてくれますか」という姿勢で授業に行きますが、これは効果的な学習法ではありません。本当は「先生、今週私が英語でこのような英語に挑戦しました。言えたところはこれとこれです。疑問に思うのは、このポイントです。それから、これの正しい言い方が分からなかったから、教えてください。」

このような学習者だと上達はびっくりする早いですよ！もしよければ、このブログを利用して、そのような質問を書いてください。書いてくれたら、私が答えます。

では、今日は早く寝なければなりません。私はバイクが趣味で、明日は鈴鹿サーキットでの練習走行があります。この前にバイクの一部を修理に出して、今日自分で組み立てなおしました。私はメカニックの技術が本当にないので、明日は少し不安です！もし日曜日になってもブログの続きがないなら、心配してください！
