（３）何々人、何々国民の言い表し方：パキスタン人は Pakistani

［バングラデシュ］
On the flight back from Paris, I met someone from Bangladesh. Yes, a Bangladeshi. I learned a few things about Bangladeshi food and their language, Bengali. Bangladeshis are an interesting people.
⇒ あとで出て来る Pakistanの国民は Pakistani、AfghanistanはAfghani という具合に、---tan で終わる国は ---ni と覚えていたので、この Bangladesh のような「非 tan 族」の国民が Bangladeshi と SHIで終わるのに気付いたときは、はっとさせられました。
⇒ 言葉も「バングラデシュ語」というものではなく、ベンガル語なのも覚えにくい感じです。

⇒ ここもパキスタン語というのでなく、ウルドゥー語であるのがややこしいところです。なお使う言葉に、隣国アフガニスタンで通用しているパシュトゥ語 Pashto を入れる人もいます。

⇒ ご覧のとおり、形容詞形と国民の呼び名が違い、さらに言語名も意外です。
［イラン］

⇒ イランの国語を指して、ウルドゥー語 Urdu としている資料もあります。
⇒ イランは人種的にも文化的にもアラブとは違うので、決して一緒にしてはならないと教わりました。イランに駐在していた人の話を聞くと、イラン人はイラク以西の人たちに対して一種の優越感を持っていることが多く、うっかりしたことを言うと、ひどく憤慨するそうです。

⇒ Iraqi と、q を入れて書くべきなのに、Iraki と書いてしまうケースをよく見ます。

Arabic. Syrians are an interesting people.
⇒ アラビア語は Arabic で、この地域の人を総称するアラブ人は Arab とスペルが違うことを見落とす人がけっこういますので、要注意です。つまり、まちがって、They are Arabics.と言う人がいるということです。
［イスラエル］

⇒ イスラエルの場合も、形容詞と国民の呼び名が国語 Hebrew とまるで違っているケースの一つです。
［レバノン］

⇒ "何とかESE " ですから、国民全体を指して言うときは、ただの Lebanese よりは、The Lebanese と言う方が普通とされます。

どこの国人がどの言語を使っているかを熟知していないと、すぐ間違えます。
