この課題にこたえて、きちんとしたメールが書けるかは、五つの視点からチェックされます。

第１に、前回マークした「回答すべき点」がすべて盛り込まれているか、

第２に、パラグラフの構成がきちんとしており、順序立てて書いているか、

第３に、友だちへのメールという状況にあった英語になっているか（妙にかしこまっていたり、難しい単語を使っていないか）、

第４に、機能的な英語の使い方をしているか、例えば、glad といった形容詞を使って、うれしさを伝え、あるいは、情報を提供し、招待を断り、何かを勧めたり、こうしたらいいのではないかと提案できるかがチェックされます。

第５に、読み手に伝わるコミュニケーションになっているか。

Teacher Handbook に掲載されている参考答案はこういう感じです。あとの解説のために、パラグラフには番号を振っておきます。本文は130ワードになっています。

are prepared.

4) Moreover, if you want to know what our traditional food is that's ‘Briham’
which contains many vegetables and it’s very high in vitamins and
carbohadratel.

5) Now as for your invitation I'm very sorry but I will be sitting my
school exams.

6) I'd love to see you when you will come.

この答案につき試験委員は、所々で文法ミスはあるけれど、気になるほどではないとし、上で説明した課題はすべてクリアしているので、合格としています。加点のない、ただの合格点です (Band 3) 。

まず「構成ないし展開」という視点でこのメールを眺めてみます。メールは基本的に３ブロックで書く訳で、最初のブロックで、何の話かがぱっとわかるようにしておきます。(1) では、手紙を受け取ったこと、そして、Sara に対して夢が実現できてよかったねという趣旨のことが書いてあり、「ああ、この前のメールへの返事だと」 Sara もわかりますから、問題ありません。（I'm too glad は I'm very glad とすべきですし、言いたいことは、I'm very glad that you're doing what you have always wanted to do. と書くべきです）

次いで、(2) , (3), (4) , (5) で用件を順序よく伝えています。特に、(5) では、それまでの流れと違って、招待を断る場面なので、Now as for your invitation と、頭で振ってあり、discourse management ができているとわかり、好感をおぼえます。

そして、しめくくりもきちんと、(6) でこなしています。

英語のおかしい点は、(2) から (5) にそれぞれありますので、それをご参考まで解答例という形で直しておきます。

are prepared.　→ 　You also asked the best way to find out what people cook at home everyday. To find that out, I suggest you visit one of our restaurants, where delicious meals are prepared every day.

注記１：相手からのメールの文面を一部そのまま自分の返事に取り込むのは間違いのない方法なので、おすすめします。

注記２：非限定用法の修飾節であることから、whereの前にはカンマを打つ必要があります。

注記：'Briham' を"Briham" と、アメリカ英語の表記に従って書いても、それで減点されることはありません。

5) Now as for your invitation I'm very sorry but that time I will be sitting my
school exams.　→ 　Now as for your invitation, I'm very sorry but I am unable to attend because I will be sitting my school exams.

注記：sit my exams はイギリス英語で、アメリカ英語なら、take examsになります。

6) I'd love to see you when you will come.　→ 　I'd love to see you when you come.

注記：未来時制を表す when 節などの中で、will を使わず、現在時制を貫くというルールを破っているわけで、FCEレベルでは大目に見てもらえても、CAEレベルになったら、積極的な減点事由になるのではないでしょうか。

こうやって見ると、１パラグラフに間違いが１つはある計算ですが、しかし、言いたいことがわからなくなるようなタイプの間違いではないので、コミュニケーションに支障はないという判定を得ています。

要は、ことメールに関して言えば、相手の質問に正面から答えてコミュニケーションとしての格好がついているか、それと、何のメールかを言う → 順序よく用件を書く → しめくくりの言葉で体裁を調える、というメールの基本が備わっているかが試されるということです。

受験生としては、このような要件を満たすメールを120-150ワードでさっとまとめる力をつけておく必要があるわけですが、この種のスキルが英語でコミュニケートする上で必須であることに照らし、正面からこのスキルの有無を試すこの試験は「いい試験」だと感じます。
