英語での質問のしかた
プレゼン、セミナー、勉強会などではたいてい質疑応答があるものですが、そこでの日本人の（英語での）質問、ときには耳をおおいたくなるような、情けない例に出会います。
そもそも公の場での質問は、最低限、clear で coherent であることが求められるというのに、つまり、最低限「何を尋ねているのかがわかり」かつ「発表の内容とどう関連しているのか」がわかるものでなければ意味がないというのに、何を言っているのかすらよくわからない質問がけっこうあり、閉口します。特に専門家の質問というのがくせもので、プレゼンなどが、発表者と聴衆とのコミュニケーションの場であることを忘れ、話を自分の専門に引きつけようとしがちです。
一番困るのが、質問をしているのか，自分の意見を言っているのかがわからない人です。ひどい人になると、質問に名を借りた大演説です。
ただ、ひとつ同情できるのが、日本語のレトリックのパターンとでも言うのか、日本語での質問の場合、「お話では・・・とのことでしたが」とか、「わたしの知るところでは、何たらかんたら」と言って、一種の前置きのあるのが普通である点です。つまり日本語での質問作法ををそのまま英語に置き換えているうちに、どこかずれてしまい、結局（英語での）質問にならないのです。しかも、こういう人に限って、「前置き」部分が、so...so...you know...you know...so...I mean...so だらけで、聞き苦しいことこの上ないものとなります。
英語での質問の仕方には一定のパターンないし作法があるというのに、どうも一般にそれが意識されておらず、あるいは誰も教えてくれないようです。手順は、基本的に「ちょっと質問、よろしいですか」とイントロを入れてから（当然プレゼンの質疑応答ではこれは省略されます）、単刀直入に聞きたいことをすなおに聞きます。
これがごく普通の質問のしかたなのに、上で説明したような前置きがあると、日本流を知らない外国人は当惑したり、イライラするのが普通です。こんな場合、人によっては、うんざりしたところで、Can you put it in one sentence? （お聞きになりたいことをワンセンテンスで言ってもらえませんか）とか、もっとストレートに What's the bottom line question?（要するに聞きたいことは何ですか）とたたみかけてきたりします。
そこで、英語でのコミュニケーションの最低限のたしなみとして、質問をする場合、この程度は心得ておいた方がいいというものをまとめてみました。
▶ 質問ですが・・・
A: Can I just ask a question (or a few questions) about your basic requirements? B: Sure, go ahead.
A: I'd be interested to know more about one of the forthcoming products you mentioned. It’s about the solar-powered mobile. B: Of course. Go ahead, please.
A: Could you tell us something about how environmentalists view your products? B: Yes, certainly. We have done some research on...
Can I just move on to another question? I’m curious to know...
☞ もう一つ関連した質問をするときの決まり文句で、こういった場合は相手の「どうぞ」などを待たずにさっさと質問してしまうのが一般です。
▶ だいたいのところで結構ですが・・・
A: Roughly how much cotton do you purchase per year? B: About...tons, I think.
A: Roughly what percentage of your annual requirement is for components? B: Well, actually, that depends on several factors.
A: Approximately, what figure did you have in mind for the next two years? B: We are looking at a figure of 10,000 or more.
Can you give me an idea of how many employees take this training course per year?
▶ 重視しているのは・・・？
A: What emphasis do you place on quality in relation to quantity? B: It's our top priority. (OR Actually, it’s not important t us any more.)
A: Could we just clarify one thing? How important to you is the package design? B: Well, that depends on several factors.
A: Is lowering CO2 emissions a matter of secondary importance? B: I'm sorry if I didn't make that point clear, but it is of utmost importance.
☞ どの程度重要なのかを言うときの言い方は大体こうです。
I can easily say it's our major priority.
Honestly, for us, it's a matter of secondary importance.
Actually, it's not a main consideration.
A: How important is the recyclability of parts to you? B: It’s certainly something we always have to take into consideration.
☞ 即答できない（したくない）ときの定番はこうです。
I'm afraid it's difficult to say at this moment.
I'm afraid I don't think I can answer that at the moment.
▶ とおっしゃると・・・
A: You said you are always reviewing your staffing requirements. Does that mean it's difficult to anticipate staffing needs for the future? B: Not exactly, I'm afraid. What I was saying was that...
A: When you say you need easy access to suppliers, do you mean that a supplier needs to deliver at short notice? B: When I said easy access to suppliers, I meant flexibility on the part of suppliers.
A: So, you're still trying to gauge the market's direction. Is that an accurate summary of where you stand? B: Perhaps I should clarify that...
なお、機会を改めて取り上げようと思いますが、英語の質問はその類型別に「役どころ」がいくつかあります。例えば、一つのパターンは、yes/noでは答えられないような where, whenなどの疑問詞で始まる質問をすることから始まります。その上で、相手の答えの中の一点に焦点を合わせて、You said なんとかかんとか、Does that mean...? ともう一歩踏み込んで行くというものです。
こういったことに問題意識がない人だと、いきなり誘導尋問やら仮定の質問、はたまた複数の疑問を盛り込んだ質問を相手にぶつけて当惑させ、コミュニケーションを損ねます。へたをしたら、「変な人」と悪印象を持たれることだってあるでしょう。
