会話例作りの実際（2011年度第７弾）
「即戦力がつくビジネス英会話」をテキストにしているクラスで学生たちが作った会話例をご紹介します。課題は交渉英語の章のキーフレーズを二つ以上盛り込むというものです。作ったのは女子三名で、このうち１人が帰国生です。他の二人がアイディアを出し、帰国生が英語に仕立てるといった感じで進めていました。
A: Can I ask something about the Christmas party, the one taking place next week?
B: Sure.
A: Er, I wanted to ask what the basis of your calculation is. Obviously, the costs are higher than last year. How come?
B: Oh, it's because I ordered 300 Santa costumes. Plenty to go around for everyone!
A: Pardon? Did you say 300? I'm not sure I understand. Would you care to repeat that?
B: Okay, I've ordered 300 Santa costumes for the X'mas party. But the main obstacle to progress at the moment is that we're not sure if we can have the accompanying Santa hats delivered in time.
C: Yes, that'd depend on various factors. But in our case, surprisingly, what matters is that this product is only available in Small or Extra-Large. Medium-size is out of stock and can't be delivered in time.
B: Yeah, that's unfortunate. Maybe we should do with Extra-Large.
C: Yes, let's do that. Extra-Large will be fine. Better than hatless Santas.
A: Wait up guys! Let's analyze the situation and get to the problem.
B: Okay, obviously the problem is that the availability of sizes is limited.
C: Can you give me an idea of your delivery schedule?
B: Sure. If you order Extra-Large, then it will be delivered on the 23rd.
C: The 23rd. Hmm, are you sure about that?
B: Yes, I'm positive about that. Let me reassure you on that point. Actually, we have the full support of the nation's best logistics operator and because....
A: Waaaait! Hold it there. My question was not about delivery. I was asking why, in the first place, we are ordering 300 Santa costumes.
B: I'm afraid your question doesn't make sense. It's a done deal and we can't cancel it now.
A: Three hundred costumes...done deal...Oh no! What were you thinking?

新刊ではなく、既刊本 http://amzn.to/vFlVs7 の改訂版です。内容的に大きな変更はありません。OHP、fax など古い単語を差し替えた程度です。ただ、中国人とインド人によるダイアログを聞ける点が新機軸です。おそらくダウンロード版で供給することになりそうです。

細かい点で申し訳ありません。
X'mas
はよくある、いわゆる誤表記ですよね？
「'」は要らないし、「X」は「エックス」ではなく、本来ギリシャ文字の「χ」（カイ）だと思うのですが…。
返信: そうですね。ただこういう練習はｆｌｕｅｎｃｙ優先という姿勢で臨んでおり、こまかなことは言いません。ともかく使ってみて、その手応えを感得する方が先です。

本当に細かいことですが、Christmasと言った場合には宗教的な意味が含まれるので、異教徒に配慮した場合Xmasになります。確かにXの由来はキリストのギリシア語表記の頭文字Chiですが、ギリシャ文字を使う必要はないと思います。アポストロフはつかない場合が多いですが、付けられている事も良く見受けられます。
同様の理由で、フランス語のmerry christmas! にあたるJoyeux Noël! も異教徒に対してはJoyeuse Fête!と言い換える事もあります。
